Title: Let It Be
Post by: Wayne L. on March 05, 2004, 11:16:03 PM
I think the Beatles classic rockumentary Let It Be is great & highly underrated for some reason even though some fans don't like it because it shows the breakup of the band but I think LIB showcases the Fab 4 at their finest creating, arguing, jamming & rocking on the rooftop near the end which proves they were a solid rock & roll band at the time despite personal & professional disagreements between John & Paul who could have toured back in 69 with the possibility of playing Woodstock.

I agree. I like to watch LIB, it's really interresting, even though it has the 'break-up' feeling.
My fave part is the rooftop concert.

I heard it was going to be this year - but they keep putting it back.  Apple seem to like releasing stuff on anniversaries nowadays - on May 20th it will be 34 years since the film first premiered in 1970; but I reckon they've missed that deadline already!

I saw LIB for the first time about 10 years ago on bootleg video which KNOCKED me out showing the Beatles creating, arguing, jamming & rocking on the rooftop near the end just being a helluva rock & roll band which proves they could have toured back in 69 with the possibility of playing Woodstock but I think some of my fellow fans hate it because it shows the breakup instead of watching it with an open mind, which is pathetic!!!

I don't hate it. However, I DO find it depressing, and not because it shows The Beatles breaking up, but because for most of the film they very clearly are not enjoying themselves. After a while their bad mood rubs off on you! Despite this, the film is fascinating!

Let It Be is a great Beatles movie which is much better than Help & MMT even though it's mostly dismissed & highly underrated by Beatles fans because it shows the turmoil inside the band which is ridiculous despite showing them creating, arguing, jamming & rocking on the rooftop which is why the Beatles are a legendary rock band.

Title: Re: Let It Be
Post by: The End on April 13, 2004, 01:52:27 PM
As I said before, I DON'T dislike this movie, I simply don't enjoy it! The ONLY reason I don't enjoy it is because after a while the whole bad atmosphere, which pervades throughout the sessions, affects me as well! It's like sitting down for a family meal after your parents have just had a huge row - the food is still tastes as nice as ever, but you can't wait to leave the table!

I watched this film very recently - the first 30 or so minutes (filmed between 2nd and 15 January 1969) is spent watching 4 (5, if you include Yoko) miserable faces stuck in a huge, cold film studio, playing rock and roll badly... it's pretty excrutiating! There was no magic. It was only after they moved the sessions to Apple studios on 22nd January, and drafted in Billy Preston that things livened up.

For me, the only truly redeeming moment is the rooftop concert... at least John and Paul look as if they're enjoying it!

True, the film shows the band disintergrating, but that's what makes it such complulsive viewing, and I do not underestimate its importance. But, as I've said before, it's depressing simply because the Beatles themselves are depressing.

I don't agree, it's not better than MMT or Help. It can't be compared, Let it be is a documentary, and MMT+Help are comedies.

Here's what I wrote about Let It Be, in another thread. It seems appropriate here too! The word is that Let It Be is coming this year.

I hope that LET IT BE contains lots of extra goodies. Maybe a 2-DVD set, with the commercially released 1970 movie on one, and lots of extras on the other. I'm thinking of the complete rooftop concert, for a start!

Since it hasn't been commercially available for so long, many fans are likely to be disappointed. I think the film is a bit of a drag. Paul seems to feature far too much: he might not grab more time, but his seems to be "quality time", if you follow what I mean. That, of course, is not Paul's fault ... the blame lies with the editors/director. Bootlegs show that there was much group discussion about many issues. The flavor of these discussions seems quite wrong in the film.
But whatever is done, Apple will screw it up [say I, hoping that I'm wrong].

In regard to the question of when it will be released, I thought it would have been 1/30/2009, since that is the 40th anniversary,
but no such luck. I read somewhere that Paul, Ringo and possibly Yoko and Olivia are afraid that some of the footage will tarnish their reputation among the fans, and/or diminish their fanbase.

Would it be worth the money to buy one of the unauthorized copies off Amazon.com or any other site?

Look on YouTube for "Beatles" and "Discontent."  There's a lot of B-Roll and unused footage out there of them screwing around, which is available from certain shops as Beatles Winter of Discontent.  Some of it's better than what got put in the film.
My favorite part of the film:  Paul doing the operatic Besame Mucho (astounding voice) and John lighting up while he does.  Lovely moment -- very warm.
I saw it right the way through about a year ago for the first time in ... 20 years?  I'm with The End -- it's just not pleasant, and not good.  The rooftop thing is fun of course, but the feel of it is lousy.  Fans who've never seen it, though -- I understand completely why you'd want to, and why you'd like it first time through.  It's the Beatles.

Hi everybody, long time no chat!

I was forever searching for Let it Be on video for years, and then last year looked for it on YouTube. There it was, divided into about 10 or 12 10-minute segments.

Of course I'd heard all about the movie for years, and when I watched it, it was slightly different than I expected. I was anticipating all sorts of arguments and tensions being played out in the studio. Instead, the pervasive mood by the band (except for Paul) was one of lethargy. When he wasn't singing, John barely spoke and definitely looked strung out.

The famous "fight" between Paul and George was more awkward than anything. That was the only real direct conflict shown in the movie. Although supposedly John and George actually came to blows during the sessions (either not filmed or the footage was buried).

So, I would agree with the past posters who found the film depressing to watch.

I'm glad I saw it though. It's a document of history.

Title: Re: Let It Be
Post by: Whoeveriam on September 17, 2009, 06:36:17 AM
I think I recall there being rumors of it coming out around the release of the Naked album and then again in 2004 or 5, but nothing as yet, I think it was all cleaned up and ready because in an interview the McCartney one said that the album came from him bumping into director Lindsey-Hogg who said he wanted to put it out on official DVD release.

Found this from wiki:

The movie was remastered from the original 16 mm film negative by Apple in 1992, with a few of those scenes used in The Beatles Anthology documentary. After additional remastering, a DVD release was planned to accompany the 2003 release of Let It Be… Naked, including a second DVD of bonus material, but it never materialized. In February 2007, Apple Corps' Neil Aspinall said, "The film was so controversial when it first came out. When we got halfway through restoring it, we looked at the outtakes and realized: this stuff is still controversial. It raised a lot of old issues."

An anonymous industry source told the Daily Express in July 2008 that, according to Apple insiders, McCartney and Starr blocked the release of the film on DVD. The two were concerned about the effect on the band's "global brand ... if the public sees the darker side of the story. Neither Paul nor Ringo would feel comfortable publicising a film showing The Beatles getting on each other's nerves ... There’s all sorts of extra footage showing more squabbles but it’s unlikely it will ever see the light of day in Paul and Ringo’s lifetime.”

I don't thnk anything about the project was right. The whole things got a nasty b****y cold atmosphere to it. On a personal point the first time I got the tombstone album I played it whilst the family was in the room and some 'unreleated' arguement developed. The first time I watched the movie I did it with a bottle of whiskey and I thought it would be cool to smoke some cigarettes... I'm still smoking after about 6 or 7 years. So I say bugger Let It Be. Funk Magical Mystery Tour instead.

Just rewatched this yesterday, and ironically enough, I feel like the more times I watch it, the less depressing it is. Not sure why. But I never really got the part before where they were talking about the footage of themselves while they were in India. I thought it was funny how Paul was talking to John about how when John went up in the helicopter and the, "I was hoping he'd slip me the answer" bit, just because Paul tells the same story in the Anthology.

Apple drops another hint that Beatles 'Let It Be' movie may come to DVD

BBC Radio online features 'Let It Be' 40th anniversary audio special for limited time On this date in Beatles history, the Fab Four just 'Let It Be'

If you don't catch BBC Radio's 40th anniversary tribute special about "Let It Be" before it goes offline in the next few days, you'll miss a possible ray of hope for anyone wishing for the movie to get re-released or finally come out on DVD.

At the very end of the hourlong broadcast, announcer Guy Garvey says "The word is from Apple is that work has begun on the restoration of the film with a future re-release at a future date still to be determined."

That moves ahead from what we had exclusively on our Abbeyrd Beatles Page site from an Apple spokesman in 2008. "We do have plans to release it some time in the future," we were told at the time. Of course, we've been hearing statements that "Let It Be" is in the cards for some time, but an acknowledgement that work has finally begun on the movie is indeed a positive sign.

The show goes offline June 1.

I never really saw the film as all that depressing either.  It's a documentary, there are plenty of band documentaries out there that show the "darker side" of the band they are documenting.  And I think the music is great.  Let It Be isn't my favorite album but I still think some of the songs are really great and I still love watching them do that rooftop concert.

So Paul and Ringo should definitely let it get released on DVD.

Though I agree Magical Mystery Tour needs a good DVD release as well.

Watching the film never felt "depressing" to me. It has always been one of my favorite Beatles films. Maybe it's because this was the very first Beatles film I ever saw. And for several years this was the only Beatles film I knew. I always enjoyed watching it.

My favorite part of the film is the bit with Ringo and George on the piano playing "Octopus's Garden". I used to watch it so often that I nearly ruined the tape... And I still think that Ringo never looked better than the way he looked in the film "Let It Be". (Well, of course, "The Magic Christian" was very good, too.)

I really don't think Let It Be is being held back because it's depressing. I think people forget the savaging McCartney and Yoko took in the seventies, and it's only been recently that their reputations have been rebuilt from the ego-centric control freaks they were portrayed as.
I don't think either of them are that keen to have that arguement dragged back in to the public domain again, which surely is what the release of this film would do.

You really think so? I dont think they would allow that to happen at this point. Its not as though they dont have copies of this film and arent aware of the things that transpire. If anything, as much as the fighting, Paul and Yoko also have huge money signs in their eyes and they surely wouldnt be against a few more paychecks.

the rooftop show is simply amazing.

Imagine being a fan nearby and hearing them go on.  Also remember none of the songs would have been known at that point (was One After 909 played in the early days at all?)

where were the wives?  Don't remember if my imagination or if I read it somewhere that they were explicitly asked not to go up on the roof with them?

I bought this one about six years ago:  http://cgi.ebay.com/BEATLES-LET-LIMITED-COLLECTORS-EDITION-DVD-/260771749215?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cb7351d5f (http://cgi.ebay.com/BEATLES-LET-LIMITED-COLLECTORS-EDITION-DVD-/260771749215?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cb7351d5f)

Mine has a second disc with additional footage not used in the film.  The quality of that disc is not as good as disc 1.
Title: Let it be and Magical Mystery Tour on DVD 2013???
Post by: Badgirl66 on October 20, 2011, 03:23:01 PM
This comes from LIB director Michael Lindsey-Hogg. Deluxe editions of both.

http://www.kshe95.com/musicnews/story.aspx?ID=1558052 (http://www.kshe95.com/musicnews/story.aspx?ID=1558052)

Hogg answered a caller's question about the film, and recalled he and Paul McCartney discussing the film's eventual reissue: "We bumped into each other on an airplane. It was just before George Harrison died. George was very ill. And George had not had a happy time during the making of Let It Be. For personal reasons. He was about to go out on his own and a lot of other things like that. And we knew it probably would not be re-released in George's lifetime. But, we have been been working on it pretty much every year for the last couple of years. And the plan is, at the moment, to have it come out, I think, in 2013."

Hogg, who also directed the Rolling Stones' 1968 Rock And Roll Circus -- along wit assorted Beatles and McCartney videos -- went on to say, "(Let It Be will come) after they release Magical Mystery Tour as a special DVD release. And it'll be the film itself, the original film -- the color's great, the soundtrack is perfect -- with a (second) DVD which will be a documentary about the making of the documentary (Let It Be)."

He added that numerous outtakes will be added to the upcoming Let It Be DVD: "When we first put Let It Be out, I had to cut out a lot of stuff that I really like and wanted to stay in there. The stuff in the new DVD has a lot of the stuff that had to be cut out. So for me, it's like the egg is now complete."

Hi Beatles fanatics! I've been hearing and reading for years that LET IT BE was going to be released on DVD, so far it hasn't happened. We'll just have to wait and see what happens. Take care.

Well as I said in my above post, I am skeptical as well. Although, with Michael Lindsay-Hogg saying it is about to come out does have a little bit of credibility with me.

I am still skeptical.

I saw the film when it was released in 1970.  It was filmed in 16 mm so it was not quite up to the usual motion picture standard.  As I mentioned previously, I bought this release on eBay several years ago...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/BEATLES-LET-Limited-Collectors-Edition-DVD-Bonus-1970-RARE-NEW-/320780739066?pt=US_DVD_HD_DVD_Blu_ray&hash=item4ab005a1fa (http://www.ebay.com/itm/BEATLES-LET-Limited-Collectors-Edition-DVD-Bonus-1970-RARE-NEW-/320780739066?pt=US_DVD_HD_DVD_Blu_ray&hash=item4ab005a1fa)

Why wait for something which might never be released.  For 24 dollars you can't go wrong with this DVD.  I think the quality is about as good as what I saw in the theater plus you get a second disc with raw footage which didn't make it into the film.

I agree with Barry here. Both Let It Be and Magical Mystery Tour are available and if you want to see them, there's several ways to do it. It's a bit the same with waiting for the official release of the Beatles songs on iTunes or whatever site to pay for music.

I have copies of both movies, so it is not about seeing them. I have seen both more times than I can count. I just hope that Apple and the other parties involved are aware that 'Let It Be' is available bootlegged and so they give us a little more. I have a lot of the extra footage that is out there too. It would be cool to see the film clean, clear and crisp. The fact that they are working on it, and have been for a considerable amount of time tells me that they are not just throwing together an old print, and putting it on disc.

Gary, the theatrical release of Let It Be involved using the original 16 mm film and converting it to 35 mm which increased its graininess.  That's the way I remember it when I saw it in the movie theater in 1970.  It just wasn't as clear as other motion pictures shot in 35 mm but it was enjoyable nonetheless.  That's how my DVD copy appears on an LCD TV.  Yes, it would be nice if Apple, in post-production, could clean up what they have and give us an HD DVD.  Labs can do that today.

As far as Magical Mystery Tour, I have both the original MPI VHS release from the late 1980s and a more current bootleg DVD.  Both are of similar quality and about the same as what you see on YouTube.  I'm sure that same lab can do something with it as well.

In the interim, these DVDs are inexpensive so if someone wants to see them on their TV, I would recommend that route.  It sure beats watching them on computers.

Hi Barry! How are you? I own the original VHS tape of LET IT BE by Magnetic Video, the picture and sound quality was not the greatest back then (1981) but I'm happy with it. I bought and own the bootleg LET IT BE on DVD and its pretty good. Don't ask me how I did it but I dubbed off my original 1981 VHS release and transferred it onto DVD, thats the best picture and sound quality I own. Take care.

I manage to get anything I want, well mostly. I still like genuine product.

I really am hoping and wishing that Let It Be will be released for DVD in 2013!I've only been a Beatles fan for a couple of years now and I can't imagine how much people who have been Beatles fans for a long time must be excited about being able to watch Let It Be in better quality and audio.I really hope it's not going to get postponed to a later date,2013 even seems like a long ways away and that's not really that long from now.We shouldn't even have had to wait this long but the good thing is there's hope for 2013.

Yes.  Some parts were very sad.  The film is of historical significance now and should be watched with that in mind.

Are the parts sad because of looking back upon them now or because the scene was actually sad in the moment?I understand that it probably is sad because it was really close to the time that they split up.I was just wondering if anything sad happens in the movie.

Both really, Jema.  The movie came out a few months after they split up so chronologically certain scenes were sad.  Today those same scenes are sad retrospectively.  We know more about The Beatles today than we knew then so it's a different sort of sadness.

Ive just watched Let It Be for the first time in about 10 years, Ive got it on DVD and I have to say I dont find it depressing at all !

In fact a lot of the banter (especially between J & P) makes me laugh, the only negative bit seems to be the Paul/George altercation but hey that happens all the time in bands when creative guys are working together , they were just being a bit b****y is all :)

My overall impression here is that the film is great, the rooftop is just brilliant, George is sulking a fair bit, but the others seem to be getting on really well, especially messing about and having a laugh, I love the bit when Paul sings Long & Winding Rd (cha cha version) with encouragement from John and then eventually paul say 'stop it' (while laughing) meaning like this is getting too silly.

Overall its a great glimpse of what it was like to be in the studio with the fabs while they worked on new songs, watching this I can imagine how they came up with 'You Know My Name' & 'Mary Jane'

Brilliant doco/film - depressing ? hell no.

The saddest scene to me is where Paul is talking to John about where he would like to see the band go, and John acts like he is listening, but you can see he clearly is not. John has an attitude, where mentally he has clearly left the Band and is with Yoko.

Well, then there is the scene where George resents the direction from Paul, and says, "I'll play anything you want". Awkward moment...

If you listen to that more Gary its Paul talking about George, and complaining to John that George has said 'no films' 'no shows' so how can we get over our nerves if we dont play shows, for me John is being diplomatic and not taking sides, and after Pauls complaints the camera shot changes so we dont really know what Johns response was, also if John had mentally left the band he would not have spent days and days in the studio, look at the way they play and sing on the roof, it sure doesnt look to me like he has left the band at all.

Yeah, you are correct. It has been a little while since I have seen it, so I couldn't remember everything that is being said.

I still like John had left the band by this time. I think John was afraid to actually leave. If I remember correctly in an interview John stated that he was afraid to leave. Obviously, later in the year, as they were recording 'Abbey Road' John gave at least a good commitment back to the band. It is like a marriage. A marriage breaks up years before the physical split, at least in most cases. There is an emotional split that takes place first, then the physical split. During that emotional split, there is a coming together at times.
