Now, in this pic you can see their guitars for one of those shows (Sheffield, Dec 8, 1965):

- 2 Hoffners (Paul)
- 12-string Rick and 1 Casino (George)
- 1 Gibson J-160E and 1 black Rick (John) ...

... and, just in the middle, a DARK stratocaster!!!  :o ...
... not the sonic blue one! ...  1965, how?!  :o ... is it another one for John?
[...]

The image:

Case closed: John played it during the rehearsal for the UK 1965 tour, in December in at the Donmar Warehouse, London  ... even changed his usual strap ...

George went to buy a Fender Strat in Hamburg,  but Johnny Guitar from Rory Storm heard about the private sale and got to the seller quicker than George. A lot of animosity as result and that's why George ended up with a Gretsch because it was an American guitar that he could afford. I'm sure this story is told in the Anthology book. It's definitely George telling the story.

Andy Babiuk told that story during a presentation I went to a few years ago. It's probably in his book too. Poor George!

No, Kelley.  Lucky George!

George's 1957 Gretsch 6128 Duo Jet is what you hear on the early Beatles recordings until early 1963 when he purchased the first of his two Gretsch 6122 Country Gentleman guitars...

You saw and heard him playing it on The Ed Sullivan Show...

Those Gretsch guitars played through his VOX AC30 amp is what gave The Beatles their distinctive sound.  The 1962 and 1963 Gretsch Country Gentleman guitars are affectionately known today as The King George Model.  I'm fortunate to own this 1963 Country Gent...

LOL Barry. I thought that really wasn't true after I wrote it. I was going to change it, but I wanted to take a nap before I went back to work after lunch.  ;D I'm glad I didn't because your reply is great!
