Over the Rainbow
« on: July 19, 2005, 10:13:52 PM »

My favorite song from one of my all-time favorite movies (The Wizard of Oz), I think "Over the Rainbow" describes human nature perfectly. Think about it- we're always trying to reach for a dream of ours, but it always seems to be just beyond our grasp, somewhere in the clouds.
Humans can never be contented with what we have. We want to live in a world "where troubles melt like lemon drops way above the chimney tops".
Even though we'll never get there, we strive for it anyway. It appears simple.
'Cause it's just somewhere over the rainbow...

Harry Nilsson did a nice version and The Demensions (sic) did a great doo-wop version.  Both worth looking up.  But nobody touches little Frances Gumm.

Aselin Debsion did a great reggae version in a medly with What a Wonderful World. You probably haveb't heard of her but she's this wicked good young singer, I think it was recorded when she was 11 or 12.

I always hated that song until I heard Eva Cassidy's version.  If that doesn't choke you up, you aren't human.

Glee Cast - Over the Rainbow

I like Glee, but I don't usually rate their covers as highly as I do this one. I think it's an excellent cover, most likely because the most talented actor/singer on the show is doing it. Also, to add, I love a good uke.

Sounds that the Glee version is a cover of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's version.

I thought it was a lovely sentiment Mairi. I love that song, and the movie too. Kids today are lucky; I only got to watch it once a year!

Sadly, few artists sing the song with the original lyrical introduction (it was cut from the film).

When all the world is a hopeless jumble
And the raindrops tumble all around
Heaven opens a magic lane

When all the clouds darken up the skyway
There's a rainbow highway to be found
Leading from your windowpane

To a place behind the sun
Just a step beyond the rain...

Judy Garland sang the introduction in this 1948 recording...

Beautiful lyrics by Edgar Harburg and music by Harold Arlen.
