Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems I've read that it was a toss-up between these cuts to be put on the White Album.
What would you have chosen?
I go with Mary Jane. More musical, weird and cosmic sounding.
-
Yeah I prefer What's the New Mary Jane to Revolution 9 but, I guess, the effect they were wanting with Revolution 9 was that you didn't prefer it.
I think, however, that What's the New Mary Jane is better than Revolution 9 because it starts off like a song and then becomes a sound colleague. Whereas Revolution 9 is a sound collage from the very start.
What's the New Mary Jane almost tricks you in a way, albeit disjointedly.
-
They both suck.

They both suck.
I'll go along with that. But if somebody tied me down and told me I had to pick one of the two to listen to, it would be Mary Jane. And that's about the extent of it.
-
I'm going to say Revolution 9, because to me What's The New Mary Jane wouldn't have had the same effect on society that R9 did. Mary Jane isn't experimental at all, and it isn't as rememberable.
To me, it's better to be remembered for being awful than not to be remembered at all. But hey, that's just me.

That's a good way to look at it. Somehow I think that's exactly how Frank Zappa looked at his own work. The worse, the weirder and more outragous, the better.

Exactly

Mary Jane.

well, for the kind of thing that was going down at the time,i really do have a lot of time for revolution 9-i think it is such an interesting piece of work,i really do.obviously i am in the minority!!it doesn't surprise me really-although lots of fans do disregard rev.9 without really giving it a chance.it is a very dark, sinister, disturbing piece-it probably sums up johns' state of mind at the time.then again,he wrote julia-also on the white album,so that particular point is open to argument.mary jane is not as strong, more of a throwaway i.m.o......revolution 9,although not a masterpiece,is a real distinctive and interesting bit of work on the white album, and i do not believe it 'sucks' at all.lots and lots of people really like 'walrus',but revolution 9 makes just as much sense.john was heading that way-it is what madness and lunacy sounds like!!
-
i like revolution #9, it was a very avant garde track, lightyears ahead of it's time.
turn me on dead man. ;D

"Revolution 9" is a recorded composition that appeared on The Beatles' 1968 self-titled LP release (popularly known as "The White Album").
The sound collage, credited to Lennon/McCartney, was created primarily by John Lennon
with assistance from George Harrison and Yoko Ono.
Lennon said he was trying to paint a picture of a revolution using sound.
The composition was influenced by the avant-garde style of Ono as well as the musique concrète works of composers such as Edgard Varese and Karlheinz Stockhausen.

My thoughts exactly.
I would bet there are more people around today who know at least something about Revolution 9, but who have never even heard of What's The New Mary Jane.
Revolution 9 is interesting and thought provoking, even if it isn't an enjoyable listen for most.
Meanwhile, glass onion used a great word for Mary Jane - "throwaway". I'm glad they discarded it. It adds nothing to the Beatles canon, where Revolution 9 definitely does.
-
Yoko Ono contributed sound effects on Mary Jane (together with Mal Evans).
That's her only musical "contribution" to the Beatles...
Oh well, I'm just being naughty... 8)

wow. :-X

....who have never even heard of What's The New Mary Jane..
A bit of education here then. ;D

She appears on a few White Album songs as well
-
Oh yeah, on Revolution No. 9, too...
That's why I wrote "contribution" (with quotation marks).
That is, I meant to say that these two examples (Revolution & Mary Jane)
show what Yoko "contributed" to the Beatles music... Screaming and
some effects.

Paul McCartney and Beatles producer George Martin hated this and tried to keep it off the album.
This is the longest Beatles song - it runs 8:15. It also took longer to complete than any other track on album.

from what i have read i am not too sure if paul hated the song as such;could be he had nothing to do with rev.9,and amongst certain tensions that are well documented on the white album sessions,he tried to veto the song;but what was he thinking of replacing it with?not guilty?
-
;but what was he thinking of replacing it with?not guilty?
I wish. I love 'Not Guilty'. 'Sour Milk Sea' would have been a good one to include too.

well,it must have been one of the two, surely?not too sure if there was a surplus of songs recorded 'in the can' anyway in the white album sessions.paul had 'junk' at this time as well, but like i say probably only 'not guilty' was complete and ready to go.then again-not sure if paul would argue georges' corner to include the song they way they used to get on,but that is another story.............. ;D
-
i say cold turkey would have been a very good fit for that album.
