Lynyrd Skynyrd
« on: February 12, 2005, 01:46:30 PM »

Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of the greatest southern rock groups of all time with the late, great Ronnie Van Zant with his distinctive vocals & as a great frontman is the southern fried version of Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin since both bands defined the 70's. Skynyrd deserves to be inducted into the RNRHOF just as much as the Allman Bros. because they kicked the doors wide open for southern rock even more with their bluesy, ballsy, honky tonk sound at the time.  LS had a huge impact on my life during my youth back in the 70's & with timeless classics like Sweet Home Alabama, I Ain't The One, Saturday Night Special, Don't Ask Me No Questions What's Your Name & Freebird there will never be another band like them ever again.  I think Johnny Van Zant would make his brother proud carrying on the legacy of Lynyrd Skynyrd for the past 17 years along with others members dying or leaving but I give this legendary southern rock band five more years before the final chord is played.

I think Sweet Home Alabama is overrated...but thats an opinion, I think FreeBird, Tuesdays Gone, Ballad of Curtis Lowe and All I Can Do Is Write About are thier best

There's a great site edking.com with forums.  Ed (who wrote Sweet Home and plays the intro) is a cool guy with some great RVZ stories.  He also has little affection for the current Skynyrd, which I find okay since Johnny looks and sings pretty much like Ronnie (although nobody was as much of a redneck badass as Ronnie).  BTW did you know that Al Kooper produced their first two albums?

'Working For MCA', 'Don't Ask Me No Questions', and 'Needle and the Spoon' are three of my favorites. I guess i'm a big fan of 'Second Helping'.

When I was in high school, we used to hang out at this place called Pizza Den at lunch,(or during spanish, typing english, etc!) Anyway, everytime we went there someone would put on Freebird. We were's so into it. So one day one of the guys that worked there came over after we put it on, opened up the juke box, took out the record and smashed it!!! I thought that was the funniest thing. I guess Lynyrd Skynyrd isn't everyones thing!

The Ed King site forum has a great story about the time RVZ mistakenly picked up a transvestite after a show.
