SSG-Past Masters 2 Results
« on: November 04, 2007, 01:34:36 PM »

The votes are in for Past Masters 2, the final album in the first round of The Song Survivor Game. With only 5 points separating the top 4, it was a close run thing.

1. Rain   27
2. Hey Jude   26
3. Paperback Writer   25

The remaining votes were:

4. We Can Work It Out   22
5. Day Tripper   13
6. Revolution  7
7. Old Brown Shoe   5
8. Lady Madonna       4
9. Ballad Of John And Yoko   3
=9. Let It Be - (single mix)   3
10. Don't Let Me Down   2
11. The Inner Light   1

We Can Work It Out makes it through to Phase II by being the highest scoring loser.

The worst song was You Know My Name (Look Up The Number), with 9 votes.

Trivia Corner: This is the first and only time that both sides of a single have hit the top 3.

This is also the first time that the B-side of a single has been voted 'worst': You Know My Name (Look Up The Number).

The top performing song in the entire competition so far is I Am The Walrus, which received just over 31% of the vote.

I'll be posting Phase II later on, when I've worked out the groups.

I really don't think Rain is one of their best songs. :-/, but that's
just me.

No, it's not just you, Andy. Rain as #1?  :o Hmm! Imagine that.

I think "Rain" got mixed up with "Revolution" because they both start with R. Don't feel bad about it, Paul, anyone can make that kind of mistake. Just go ahead and switch the two songs around, there's a good fellow.

What's interesting to me is seeing what people on the forum-- people who presumably listen to the Beatles a lot-- pick out as their favorites. We'd likely see a way different vote with more casual Beatles listeners. (Or just with different forum participants, as Paul has mentioned before.)

'Rain' surprises me as the leader, too, though I like it a lot. Interesting.

I think 13 people in the last round would disagree with you. ;)

I'm thinking "Rain" might be an acknowledgement of our dear Ringo, as this was one of his favorite Beatles songs drumming-wise. From an interview in The Big Beat:

Quote from: Ringo
My favorite piece of me is what I did on "Rain." I think I just played amazing. I was into the snare and hi-hat. I think it was the first time I used this trick of starting a break by hitting the hi-hat first instead of going directly to a drum off the hi-hat. But I couldn't do that anymore because that came out of something that could only happen back then."

No its not just you. I think its perhaps their most overrated song ever. Even more than Tomorrow Never Knows

I'm actually not that surprised Rain is number 1 (out of the songs in the list, anyway)

The top performing song in the entire competition so far is I Am The Walrus, which received just over 31% of the vote. Wehey! ;D

Rain is their greatest song. I don't know why ya'll are packing so much heat. It is perhaps thier most complete song, best bass line, cool slowed down guitar part, interesting vocal (the reverse part is exceptional) and the drumming.  I don't know why there are so many complaints.

I prefer Rain. It definately triumphs in the lyric department - they are simple, ambigious and evocative. Perfect - while PW is interesting, it's lyric stops you engaging with the song on any personal level, it's too tricky-dicky.
In fact I think the simplicity of Rain generally marks it as a better song. PW is like some exercise in master songwriting skills.  Rain  is evocative and personal, PW is clever. And the dense production for once outdoes a typical McCartney  crystal clear effort.

Heh. The more I think about this, the less sure I am in my opinion. They're both great choons. OK, officially place me on the fence now.

Paperback Writer has always been such a favourite of mine, I'd always go with it. Strangely enough, I don't think I ever heard Rain until about 12 years ago!
