Yes...very different! Apparently this is his first composition for tape recorder. It's interesting to read about how he did it but I couldn't listen to the whole thing. It made my German Shepherd nervous and right after I stopped it my computer beeped. I guess it was nervous too. LOL

Urgh, that video/sound combination is like a creepy combination of Revolution #9 and the movie The Ring.  <shudder>

That's so funny; I was just watching her Midnight Special performance of this song! I remember seeing that in 1975.

I saw one posted by a different person and it didn't tell who the guys were. I remember Andrew Gold. He had a few hits in the late '70's. The harmony at the end of this is great!

It certainly is, Kelley.

The Everly Brothers' original recording just fades out at the end.  But at their Royal Albert Hall reunion concert they ended the song with their own very special harmony...

Fits in with your family story on the other thread.

Maybe it was Phil's death that made me realise it but the amount of incredible stuff the Everlys did is astounding.
Ace put out a great CD a few years ago called 'Original British Hit Singles'; 22 tracks from '57 to '60, the Cadence stuff essentially.

The remarkable thing is that it isn't just the A-sides that are famous but also most of the B-sides.....'Maybe Tomorrow', 'Take A Message To Mary', 'Love Of My Life', 'Devoted To You', 'Claudette', 'I Wonder If I Care As Much'.....most acts would have killed to have had those as A-sides.

Now we know where The Beatles got the idea to put out great B-sides!

You're right. I'm so glad Phil and Don reconciled before it was too late.

Thanks for mentioning this. Amazon has it here in the US and I've got credit with them burning a hole in my pocket.

They certainly did influence The Beatles in many ways. I think it's so great that The Beatles gave B-sides such a significant role in their early repertoire. It was proof even then of their willingness to take creative risks.

There are definitely more definitive compilations as the Ace CD doesn't have the huge Warner Brothers' hits, and there are some wonderful looking box sets of the Everlys' stuff out there for serious money, but that would be the first CD I'd rescue in a fire.....not that I'd want to test out my theory!

Yes, their voices meshed well for that reason as in other brother and sister groups.  But The Everly Brothers' vocal harmony was a very tight form based on diatonic triads as opposed to classic harmony.  Most of Phil and Don's lines could stand alone as melody lines.  In classic harmony, the singers' lines work well sung together but are not melodic alone.

Right.  Just look at how they looked into each others eyes as they sang harmony and the expression on Phil's face after they finished singing.  These two brothers were moved just as much as the audience in this long-awaited reunion.

From 1957 through 1961 The Everly Brothers were always high on the US Country and US, UK and Australian charts.  In some cases, their "B" sides charted higher than the "A" sides where you are, oldbrownshoe.  Here in the United States we heard them on the radio daily during those years which were marked by the demise of Buddy Holly and the loss of Elvis Presley to the US Army.

My first memory of them was when I was a youngster hanging around some older boys in the playground down the block.  They were listening to Bye Bye Love on a transistor radio.  Not too long after that, we saw them on Julius LaRosa's TV show...
