Glen Campbell
« on: October 08, 2008, 08:43:55 AM »

Saw him on TV last night doing Witchita Linesman. He's a decade older than McCartney but his was in fine form. In fact I'd rate his voice and performance the best I've seen of the oldies - Paul, Neil Diamond etc.
Amazing.

I suppose that if old Glenn had had to sing Long Tall Sally every night for 5 years his voice might have ended up a little more shredded!

He has what my father would have called a 'proper' voice. It doesn't sound like it's ever been stretched. And I remember him from the 70's of having this very wholesome family man image; someone who probably doesn't drink or smoke, and goes to church every Sunday. See, God on his side as well.

I though Neil Diamonds voice sounded pretty good on '12 Songs'. Pretty awful live though, apparently, but then his has never been that kind of smooth sounding voice.

Glen Campbell had quite an interesting carreer, even before he became famous. He was a member of The Champs (best know for their song "Tequila"), toured with the Beach Boys in 1964-1965 as Brian Wilson's replacement and as a session musician he played on records by Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, The Beach Boys, The Monkees, The Mamas & The Papas and Dean Martin and countless Phil Spector sessions...

I think the one thing that messed Glen up was all the time he spent with Tanya Tucker years ago.  That woman is poison.......

I was really saddened to learn about Glen Campbell's Alzheimer's diagnosis. He is handling it with so much grace and dignity though. I missed my chance to see him a few years ago and I hoped he'd be coming back around here on his farewell tour but the schedule doesn't look promising.

There's also a nice article about him in September 1st's issue of Rolling Stone.

Enjoy him while you can, he is on his last tour. He has announced he has Alzheimer's Disease. He won't be able to remember anything soon. How sad. I remember him in the '70s. I sort of liked him.

Hi Gary910! I remembered when he was dating Tanya Tucker, she was a little hellraiser.

Yes, the link I posted is a news story about that. Like I said earlier, he is handling this with a great deal of dignity. He had his problems in the past but it speaks well of him that he is making this effort for his fans.

I wonder who is going to be caregiving for him? Whoever it is, its not going to be easy. I wish Glen well.
