I have read some Beatles biographys and one says James Paul McCartney, and another says John Paul McCartney. So which one is right? Or will we not know unless we look on his birth certificate?

Edit: Do you also know why he went by Paul instead of John or James?

There is no doubt it is James.

There was a TV show he did in the '70s, it was titled "James Paul McCartney". His father's name was James, his son's name is James.

I don't remember which ones, but he has signed some legal documents, James Paul McCartney. I could go on, but I think that should be enough evidence.

Ok, Thank you! I got a book from the library called 'The Beatles' by Hunter Davis. In Paul's chapter it reffers to him as John Paul McCartney. This also might be a older copy, it could have been updated by now.

I think that his family call him Paul 'cos was another James in the house. Just to difference them. (Note: His son is called James too)

Isn't it a somewhat common British custom to go by your second name? Or at least a common Scottish custom, from what I know.

John , James , George and Ringo does'nt have the same ring to it , as John Paul George and Ringo .

Between Paul and his brother Michael, they both go by their middle names.

Michael is actually, Peter Michael McCartney.

So I think it was more than just trying to distinguish him from his dad.

I guess some families/cultures just like using the middle name as a person's "regular" name.

I have a friend who shares the same first name with all her sisters, so they are all called by their middle names.

Yeah, most of the women in my mother's family actually all have the first name of Mary or Catherine (Catholic ya know) so they mostly go by their second names.

Funny, the friend I was referring to above has women in her family named Maria for their first names. They are probably Catholics too.

Is your name a variation on Mary as well?
