Title: Wait vs. Run For Your Life
Post by: Brynjar on June 10, 2011, 10:58:54 AM
I´ve always been fond of those two songs off Rubber Soul even though the writer consider them throwaways. But which of those two do you prefer?

I voted for Run For Your Life. It's more energic than the other one, Wait is boring and I really don't like it.

I'm not sure about the prison thing, Kevin.  Maybe, though.  I've always thought it had to do with being away on tour and longing to return home.

One thing I do know is that I just got this VOX tone pedal and I can't wait to try it out playing this song!

I voted for Wait because Run for Your Life, while a catchy tune, has scary lyrics! It took me quite a number of years before I really thought about it though!

I'm getting bored reading the owner's manual.  ;)

This pedal can do a lot.  I'll hook it up tonight and see what it does to Wait and Yes It Is.

I like your AC 30, Kevin.  One day soon I'll get one but right now this 1963 Fender VibroVerb Reissue does pretty well...

I've ALWAYS LOVED Run For Your Life. The first time I heard that song was on the Beatles Cartoon series from the 60s! I still remember the episode. It involved Ringo getting hit over the head with a vase in France at a museum and then Marie Antoinette falls in love with him and they start singing Run For Your Life (since she is going to get be-headed!) lol ! I also think that it is a GREAT album ending song because it's typical Lennon going in the complete opposite direction after an entire album of folky love songs! I think it was a very ironic ending on Lennon's part!  Not to mention the killer guitar riffs!

We shouldn't forget that 'Wait' was originally recorded during the 'Help' sessions. It was dragged from the archives to be used as filler on Rubber Soul.

For me Wait wins by a mile.
Was never a big fan of Run For Your Life - it would have fit on Beatles For Sale but by Rubber Soul they had left songs like that behind. They were fishing for songs to fill out Rubber Soul and it shows with songs like that. Like an old rockabilly copy that they could knock out in their sleep.
I really like the vibe that they have going on in Wait, however. I know it was recorded earlier than the other Rubber Soul songs, but it fits perfectly on RS. I love the build-up in the "I feel as though ..." section.

Nice !!!

Thanks, Peter.  I've yet to master the VOX ToneLab.  I use it when no one's around.   ;)

Yeah, I bet that's a great combination. They knew what they were doing those Beatle guys  ;)

I've never owned a Vox amp myself but have played through a few - always loved the lovely clean, crisp sound I got when I used my Rickenbacker 12-string through a Vox. Only other amp that has come close for that kind of sound was an old Fender Twin I used for a while.

To keep this remotely on-topic, which guitar was George playing on Wait?

George was after a particular sound in 1962-3.  No doubt he was influenced by Chet Atkins.  Yes, they knew what thry were doing alright!   ;)

The AC 30 I bought last year was the VOX AC30CC2X, a limited edition model with the same specs as the 1962-3 AC30.  The sound I get with my 1963 Country Gent through that amp is much what George heard back then.

The two sources I have for what guitar George used on Wait is at home.  I'll look through Recording The Beatles and The Beatles Recording Sessions tonight and post what I find, Peter.
