The Velvet Underground
« on: September 07, 2004, 09:33:33 AM »

wats everyones favourate band other than the beatles from the sixties. Mines the velvet underground. They were managed by andy warhol and released there debut album in the same year as seagent peppers. but the velvet underground were completly the opposite to most other bands in the sixties as they were from new york an did not by into the whole peace an love thing. they wrote songs about heroin and S&M. i like them cos i like there cynical side and they had a much bigger influence on punk than any other band from the sixties. I think that the Velvet underground are the only band from the sixties who can compete with the beatles in terms of the imfluence they have had.

I have to disagree, I think Velvet Underground are one of those bands that are over-rated becasue of the time they were around.
I feel much the same way about the Doors. Although they had some good songs. the credit that is given is way over the top.

yeah i agree the doors are over rated. but i really like the velvet underground. i like the way they use loads of distortion and feedback rather than spending ages on the production. but yeah there are alot of people who say they are over rated. i think alot of the credit they get is probably due to the fact that they were so out of place in the sixties though.

I love Sunday Morning - it's just SO badly recorded it sounds like a bootleg... and that's not a complaint! :)

in 1967 paul and brian eptein were in talks with andy warhol and lou reed to try an bring the velvet underground over to britain to tour. it would have been so cool if they went through with it but it never happened.

i love the velvet underground myself and i love the doors as well. they are probably two of my favorite bands, up there with the beatles and zeppelin.

until this certain post was brought up, i thought i was the only one on the forum who liked the velvet underground. partly because it didn't seem too many people liked them when i posted my pic of them on rock pics.

My dad introduced me to them earlier this year when he learned I like Andy Warhols work. I like them a lot, and I think Lou Reed is just awesome.

yes. lou reed was awesome and i love the blue mask, which is my favorite album of his. it has the underground sound, but talks about mundane things, rather than drugs and s&m.

I know this won't be popular to say--but sometimes I think VU is the most important band of the 60s.  Lou writes "Waiting for my Man" and "Heroin" and the next thing you know the Stones respond with Beggars Banquet.  Paul's character songs like "Drive my Car" or "Lovely Rita" seem lightweight compared to "Lisa Says" or "Candy Says".  "Pale Blue Eyes" is as pure and confessional as anything Lennon did, during or after the Beatles.  "Sister Ray" is psychotic in a way that "Helter Skelter" seems contrived by comparison.

Nothing against the Beatles, they're great.  But even more than Dylan (who tended to baroque overwriting), Lou Reed defined the rock lyric of the 60s.  "Heroin" seems real in a way that Dylan's dope poetry seems willfully obfuscating.

Too bad Lou became too selfconsciously "the poet" in the 70s with a bunch of overproduced junk.  But from 66-69, he was the king.  Some of his late 80s and 90s stuff is okay.  But never achieves the level of spontaneity and vision of his VU stuff.

yes, adamzero, it wouldn't be too popular considering that you are in a beatles forum, but yes, i occasionally feel the same way.

the beatles were better, but the VU were more influential.

I don't know, I'd say the Beatles are more influential, even if the VU are better (which is really a matter of taste) I mean, even the most musically brain-dead moron had heard of the Beatles, but none of my friends know about the Velvet Underground.
