And so, as Tiny Tim Cratchit said 173 years ago (has it really been that long?), "A Merry Christmas to us all; God bless us, every one!"

And from Ebenezer Scrooge:  "I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. I will not shut out the lessons that they teach!"

I think Ebenezer had a better attitude than I do.

Merry Merry!  Indeed!

Merry Christmas, Kathleen, and a Happy and Healthy New Year which has not one but two treats waiting for you.  Yes, there will be two TwiLiGHt zONe New Year's Marathons this year...

Syfy's long-running tradition of airing an always highly anticipated marathon of classic Twilight Zone episodes over New Year's Eve and Day, and the network is doing that again in 2019. Syfy's 2019 Twilight Zone New Year's marathon runs just under 48 hours, beginning Tuesday, Dec. 31, at 6am ET and running until Thursday, Jan. 2, 2020, at 4am ET. It features 92 episodes, including plenty of fan-favorite installments.

Syfy is not alone in ringing in the New Year with The Twilight Zone. For the second year now, digital broadcast network Decades will be airing its own marathon of memorable episodes, in a celebration of the show called "A Toast to Twilight" that will run a full 48 hours. Decades starts its Zone party Tuesday, Dec. 31, at 7am ET, with the marathon ending Thursday, Jan. 2, at 7am ET. Along with some usual favorites, Decades' marathon will also feature some rarely seen hourlong Twilight Zone episodes from the show's fourth season.

See the TV Insider Website for details:  'The Twilight Zone' New Year's Marathons 2019-2020: A Full Episode Guide (https://www.tvinsider.com/840075/twilight-zone-new-years-marathon-2019-2020-syfy-decades-episodes/)

Awesome, Barry; thanks for the heads-up! I had to cancel all my cable a few months ago because of budget constraints, but I do have Amazon Prime, and Prime has Twilight Zone. I'll just mix up the episodes myself and create my own marathon.  :)

There you go Kathy! Who needs cable? (Apparently Kevin does...I have been trying to get him to go along with canceling it as it is a major bill here but he told me that’s all he wanted for Christmas. So that’s all he got; that and a boot dryer. LOL) Enjoy Zoning out!  :)

Thanks, Kelley! My cable bill was outrageous, too, so I got a Roku device on Black Friday for less than $20. I don't watch a lot of television, anyway, so it worked out fine.

I never got to go: Amazon restricted its Twilight Zone access; now one must subscribe to the CBS All Access Channel.   icon_mad

I didn't watch any episodes anway; my son is still refusing to have anything to do with me, so I couldn't summon my usual nerdy enthusiasm.  :(

My daughters, both of whom are coming home with their boyfriends for the holidays, changed their plans again—this is about the fourth time—and I had to run out to the store yet another time and deal with the crowds. (I'm a curmudgeon; I detest crowds, yes, even at Christmas.) I've been running around so much this week that when I got home earlier I realized I'd forgotten to get anything for Christmas Eve dinner, when my younger daughter will be here by herself, to eat and watch Christmas movies. I was NOT about to go back out, so since she had to run out to (ugh) Walmart anyway she picked up some frozen burritos and fixings. So, we'll be having a decidely UNsophisticated Christmas Eve dinner. But being together is, of course, most important. I just have to laugh at the whole situation. And I have a heck of a spread to put out for Christmas Day breakfast and lunch.  :)

Cheers to you all.

I bloody hate this time of year. Loved it when I was a kid and when my kids were little. People get so stressed out and anxious with it all and go bloody mad. Yesterday we went to the shops and saw people with enormous amounts of food, huge trolley loads. I would'nt mind but they're only closed for 1 day.
I shudder to think of all the additional packaging and junk (mainly from cheap Chinese made presents) thats going to end up in landfill. This truly is silly season.

I agree; some people get out of control. I did a bit myself this year. I'm savoring each holiday now because I know that soon my girls will be not as willing to travel all over to see their parents and soon-to-be (I hope) in-laws. My older daughter and her boyfriend in particular are chasing all over the state in an attempt to be fair. I'm sure they'll get to the point that a lot of couples do, when they put their foot down and choose one family to visit, in an effort to maintain their sanity. (I know we faced this battle each year back East: Delaware or New York?) :(  So I went a bit out of my way this year to decorate, in particular, because when I mentioned cutting back on that they seemed upset.

I was thinking of you today, nimrod, because I spent a good part of the day trying to track down an author in Melbourne, even though I know it's Christmas Eve there already. You and your wife are in Melbourne, correct? I spent a decent chunk of time emailing back and forth with production staff and her university colleagues.

Oh, and agreed, Christmas is so much fun with little kids! When I have grandchildren I am going to delight in spoiling them rotten in all sorts of ways.  :) I've already jokingly warned my kids.

Yes, all that.  And to make matters worse, Kev, it's summer down there for you right now, it's hot, there's no snow, and you've got roos instead of reindeer.  And to top it all off, you're upside down.  It can't get any worse than that!

I dont mind the weather, I grew up in a sort of grey, sometimes rain, sometimes snow, damp, foggy, cold 32F, miserable climate. I love blue skies, ocean breezes here on level 43.
My building is 55 floors and it doesnt feel upside down.  ???

Warm weather for Christmas is great. I've got prawns, white fish, beer and chilled white wine all ready to go.

Dont have the ocean here unfortunately. But maybe head there in January.

the stress of the season is real, especially in year 2 of Covid, people are out of their minds at the grocery stores.

Our Christmas every year - we deal with a little conflict that our oldest was born on 12/24 at 11:59:50 pm and has demanded/urged us to not celebrate anything Christmassy on the 24th.  So true to that, but with a slight modification this year, she got MARRIED last Friday to add her wedding anniversary to the "not Christmas until the 25th" mode.

It was sort of an elopement, just 9 of us present for the ceremony including my daughter's new father in law, who got ordained to perform the ceremony.  She is having a destination party affair next June with a slightly larger crowd.

All 5 kids (and one son in law now) are all local so we will have everyone home this year.  Later today (24th) we are celebrating our oldest daughter's birthday!  Authentic street Mexico tacos and sides.

For Christmas day, a honey baked ham, more traditional although we gave up and ordered it rather than prep and cook everything ourselves.

Merry Christmas to all!

That's lovely, blmeanie; congratulations on the new family member.  :)

That is exactly what I did last year, for Thanksgiving, only I had to have it shipped because there are no Honey Baked Ham stores here. It was so easy, and  delicious.

It was a lot better watching it on DVD, believe you me.

At the time (Boxing Day 1967) it was shown in black and white and no one expected it to be so amateur.

It was the ideal moment for our parents and other killjoys to tell us that the Beatles weren't as good as we'd been saying for the past few years.

I hadn't realized, or perhaps I'd forgotten, that it was originally broadcast in black and white. That seems hard to imagine; I always associate the movie and album with vivid colors at all times.

It was shown in colour a week later (after all the damaging reviews) on a TV channel called BBC 2. But that changed little since very few people had colour TVs in England in1967. The US was always said to be way ahead of England on this.

The first time I saw MMT in colour was on DVD or maybe VHS cassette, I don't remember.

Those clips we now think of in colour (Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, All You Need Is Love etc.) were all shown on TV in the UK in glorious black and white.

For Hey Jude in 1968, George asks David Frost "Is this in colour?" and Frost has to admit that it isn't.

I bought the Magical Mystery Tour movie in VHS in 1979.  The quality was fair at best but at least I had the film in its entirety.

In 2012 I bought the Magical Mystery Tour Deluxe Box Set (Blu-ray/DVD/double-vinyl EP) on its release.  The quality was excellent and there were some interactive bits you could play with once you understood how to find them.  Yes, this was like searching for clues.  I posted how to do this in September 2012.

I enjoy Magical Mystery Tour as much as A Hard Day's Night and Help!  I like the improvisational nature of the film.

And yes, the film was full of clues which was parodied in All You Need Is Cash...

the stress of the season is real, especially in year 2 of Covid, people are out of their minds at the grocery stores.

I was thinking about this last night—that is, the continued stress of COVID, politics, and Covid–politics—although not in regard to the holidays. Here in the States it seems to me the stress is taking a terrible toll on some relationships. Several months ago, I lost an online female friend over political differences, and I almost lost another, in-person friend, whom I've known for 30 years, over the same thing. Luckily, for once (!) I managed to hold my tongue after she jabbed me a few times—not sure it was intentional or not—about the election. (She knows my political views, but it's a long friendship, so I gave her the benefit of the doubt and swallowed several nasty rejoinders.)

As far as COVID and COVID–politics, my 15-year book club dissolved last month after months of fractious discussions. And my weekly coffee get-togethers with my closest friends haven't been immune, either. We've managed to avoid flat-out conflict, but sometimes the discussions get tense. It's taken some of the joy out of our time together. We try to avoid the topics, but somehow they always come up.

I'm looking forward to watching Let It Be and just escaping life for a bit this weekend.

Thanks for the reminder, Barry! We always watched the Perry Como specials because the company Dad worked for, GTE Sylvania, sponsored them. I probably wouldn’t have told my friends this but I really enjoyed them. I was thinking about this over the summer and went searching to see if I could find one. Sure enough I did but I wanted to wait for Christmas to watch it. This even has all the 1974 commercials in it.  :)

I watched Perry Como's shows regularly, Kelley.  His music director, Nick Perito, lived across the street and Perry Como would occasionally drop by to go over arrangements.  He was very friendly to us kids.

And as I mentioned, Perry Como had a beautiful voice and sounded great whether he sang solo or with other singers as he did with Karen Carpenter in the Christmas Show you posted.

Perry Como's Latin was perfect in his Ave Maria as was his Aramaic and Hebrew in Kol Nidre...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeIYLGJF0kc# (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeIYLGJF0kc#)

Kol Nidre is recited just before the start of Yom Kippur services as the sun is setting.  I've heard Kol Nidre sung by many cantors in my lifetime but Perry Como's Kol Nidre is my favorite.

Perry Como did indeed do a beautiful job with this song.

I have so many favorite renditions of Ave Maria. This one in particular, by Leontyne Price as the soloist, brings me to tears:

https://youtu.be/4RjW6WDx1A0 (https://youtu.be/4RjW6WDx1A0)

BUT Andrea Bocelli's version also makes me choke up. I have admired Bocelli since he declined Tom Cruise's request that he sing Ave Maria at Cruise's Scientology marriage to Katie Holmes. Not that I wanted to see Cruise or Holmes be disappointed, and from what I understand Holmes was raised as Roman Catholic. But Ave Maria would not have been appropriate at the ceremony. (Bocelli did sing at the reception, from what I've read.) It's not often you see a Catholic stand up for their faith like that. I'm not trying to ruffle anyone's feathers; I have simply had one too many arguments about how Catholics allegedly "worship" Mary. It gets old—fast.

Anyway. Grab a tissue (Well, I'll be dabbing at my eyes, anyway ;)  ):

Good for Andrea Bocelli not singing Ave Maria at Tom Cruise's wedding.  It didn't belong there.  In my humble opinion, it did belong in the venue where he sang it; in The Colosseum in Rome where so many early Christian martyrs died.

But back to Perry Como and his Christmas Specials for a moment.  This was his last Christmas Special recorded live in Dublin.  Perry Como was ill with the flu that day.  He closed the Christmas Show with Ave Maria as he would always do...

That's Nick Perito conducting the orchestra.  Perry Como apologized to his Dublin audience for a performance he felt was not up to his usual standards.

Good for Andrea Bocelli not singing Ave Maria at Tom Cruise's wedding.  It didn't belong there.  In my humble opinion, it did belong in the venue where he sang it; in The Colosseum in Rome where so many early Christian martyrs died.

I couldn't agree more, Barry.

Ring out the false, ring in the true!

That’s my favorite New Year song.  ;)

I watched Perry Como's shows regularly, Kelley.  His music director, Nick Perito, lived across the street and Perry Como would occasionally drop by to go over arrangements.  He was very friendly to us kids.

That’s a very sweet story, Barry. I am glad to know that he was as kind in person as he appeared on TV.

Yes, Kelley, what you saw on TV was the real Perry Como.  Nick Perito had three children and my sister and I were friends with them.  Perry Como once sang a few rounds of Catch A Falling Star with us...

I wish we had cellphones in those days to record it.  :)

I wonder if Bocelli has declined to sing "Hallelujah" during Lent. It's a term that is not to be used during that time.

Merry Christmas!

Two clips from an interview recorded and aired on December 24, 1963 for the TV show Day by Day. It was filmed at the Astoria Cinema in London, site of the Beatles Christmas Show. The Beatles were kind enough to perform Gary Crimble and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, like they did on their first fan club flexidisc.    ;D

Merry Christmas everyone!
I don't know how to celebrate it yet,
we just watch some Christmas movies, decorate two trees (one of which is natural), prepare a small gift for our son.
New Year is still the main holiday for us  roll:)  we get used to it.

And yes, watched Rudolph the Red Nose cartoon of 1964  ha2ha

Merry Christmas to you and your family, Dmitry.

Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite is traditional around these parts.  Specifically for you and me is the trepak...
