I saw John Sebastian live in June, 1969.  He did Darling Be Home Soon and Younger Generation and, yes, we were floored by those two songs.  They were perfect for the time, perfect for Woodstock and perfect for all time.

The formation of The Lovin' Spoonful is recounted in The Mamas and The Papas' Creeque Alley:

John and Mitchy were getting kind of itchy
Just to leave the folk music behind
Zal and Denny, working for a penny
Trying to get a fish on the line
In a coffee house Sebastian sat
And after every number they'd pass the hat
McGuinn and McGuire's just a-getting higher
In L.A., you know where that's at
And no one's getting fat except Mama Cass

Zally said, Denny, you know there aren't many
Who can sing a song the way that you do, let's go south
Denny said Zally, golly, don't you think that I wish
I could play guitar like you
Zal, Denny and Sebastian sat, at the Night Owl
And after every number they'd pass the hat
McGuinn and McGuire's still a-gettin' higher
In L.A., you know where that's at
And no one's getting fat except Mama Cass

When Cass was a sophomore, planned to go to Swarthmore
But she changed her mind one day
Standing on the turnpike, thumb out to hitch hike
Take her to New York right away
When Denny met Cass he gave her love bumps
Called John and Zal and that was the Mugwumps
McGuinn and McGuire couldn't get no higher
But that's what they were aiming at
And no one's getting fat except Mama Cass

Mugwumps, high jumps, low slumps, big bumps
Don't you work as hard as you play
Make up, break up, everything you shake up
Guess it had to be that way
Sebastian and Zal formed the Spoonful
Michelle, John, and Denny getting very tuneful
McGuinn and McGuire just a-catching fire
In L.A., you know where that's at
And everybody's getting fat except Mama Cass

yeah i really do like that song
watched that woodstock clip a whole bunch of times since you posted
he misses part of the first chorus which kind of makes the song better to me....
the time signature or meter of the song is really unusual and that missed lyric adds to the uniqueness
-
if i'm to believe youtube comments, john sebastion was a last minute decision to peform that day and kind of unpracticed
-
as i said - the live slade version is my second favorite so far - definitely worth watching! i'd never known any slade till now. really good stuff
-
as far as that lovin /darlinbehomesoon clip...it may be from ed sullivan
alot of people were utube commenting on the guitarist zal who gets a little annoying with his ham-iash antics goofing around mouthing the words etc
kind of wacky folk/hippie-ish freak like behavior youd expect....
arguabley detracts from the clip , ,
some people commented that he intentionally was protesting the soft direction the group was going in ... away from the jug bands roots
--
-
went on to read that zal got busted for pot and turned in his supplier to avoid getting deported to canada
after he became a snitch everyone in the music business shunned him and appartently it played a major role in the lovin spoonful's dissolution

Summer In The City was #1 on The Billboard Hot 100 that summer.

They had a #2 hit a few months before with Daydream...

i had them pigeonholed in as a folk rock onetrick pony...
but in truth they really hit on many different sounds
-
-
do you believe in magic DOES have a motown groove
summer in the city could pass for blood sweat and tears!
daydream sounds like the turtles or munjo jerry
and darlin be home soon could pass for the association!

A half-million people can be a bit distracting, I guess.  But yes, that's what made his solo performance at Woodstock memorable.

That was Zal, always the clown.

Yes, The Lovin' Spoonful was folk, folk-rock, jug band, and Country & Western.  John Sebastian described their styles as "good-time music."

You Didn't Have To Be So Nice was my favorite.  When I saw John Sebastian playing the autoharp on that one, I knew I had to get me one of those.

I mean what other group featured an autoharp player?  It was neat how he rested his head against the instrument and swayed as he strummed the bridge.

I'm not a huge fan. They were not very innovative, their songwriting was far behind other 60's artists and they weren't great performers either. Nevertheless, that doesn't stop me from enjoying them and I admit that they had an interesting own sound.

That's Jerry Yester who replaced Zal Yanovsky.

You Didn't Have To Be So Nice

Beautiful song!

I bought my Oscar Schmidt OS100-15 autoharp in 1985.  The shop gave me an instructional video by John Sebastian playing his own OS 100-15...

I love my autoharp!  These days, he'll show you how to play You Didn't Have To Be So Nice...

That's too bad. Zal was a funny guy. Look at him here at 3:04. When I posted this before I thought it was just a little out of synch but a commenter on YouTube pointed out that Zal was singing "Despite the heat it'll be all sh*t."  Steve Boone heard it. ;D

Agreed!

That's around the time I wanted one. I learned to play in college and when I was teaching I wanted to buy one but they didn't pay very much at the parochial school where I taught. LOL

I knew it was a good idea to switch from Mungo Jerry to the Lovin' Spoonful!

So, I had a quick chat with John yesterday. Nothing too revelatory to report. He's nice - as you'd expect - and eager to provide clear answers to questions. He's enjoying life and still tours a bit, for the shear love of it, so it seems.

He just did some collaboration with the reformed Jim Kweskin Jug Band, which he has a prior history with, and will continue partnering with David Grisman in the near future.

John is good. John is great.

 :)

Thanks, Jim. I've been wondering how that went.
