It was written by Paul about John's son Julian who was going through a lot when John and Cynthia were getting a divorce. He later bought the original manuscript for it I beleive.

Yeah he wrote it while he was on the train I believe to go visit Cynthia... he started singing it as a comforting song for Julian, it was origanally "Hey Juels" but it didn't sound right so they later changed it to "Hey Jude"... this is what I've read and heard at least.

Macca was unsure if some of his lyrics worked until encouraged by John to keep them in....I think it was the 'Don't carry the weight upon your shoulders' line in particular. ;)
