Title: Covers of Beatles Songs
Post by: Harrison on November 08, 2004, 08:38:54 PM
Anyone heard some good covers of Beatles songs?  I heard one of Ray Charles doing "Let It Be."  It was really good.  I've also heard that Aerosmith did a cover of "Come Together."

Aussie band 'even' do a fab cover of "And your bird can sing".

What about the "I am sam" soundtrack? Most of those were pretty good

I dont really like Beatle covers, I cant help over-casting a critical eye.

BlackBird - CSN

Paul Weller has done And Your Bird Can Sing,(quite good) and a not as good version of Instant Karma....which I know is Lennon tune but there you go.

Stevie Wonder's We Can Work It Out is a nice variation of the tune.
U2's version of Helter Skelter is great.
Another funny one is Tom Jones version of The Long And Winding Rd.....very funny.

I hear what your saying Indica. It's hard not to compare.

I shall try and remember some others.

I've heard a cover of Getting Better a lot on commercials.  Anybody know who sings that?

No, but a cover of it has been used on the "Better Homes and Gardens Show" herein Australia.  Sigh.

What about Joe Cocker's "With a Little Help from my friends"? When I was a teenager and in my total obsession phase, I refused to watch the credits of the Wonder Years...until a few years later I heard that Paul reallyliked that version.  Funny how I changed my mind!

Banararama did a charity version of "Help" with English comediennes French and Saunders. Acceptable since it was for charity...

Aerosmith is the greatest Beatles covers band of all time with great remakes of Come Together, I'm Down & Helter Skelter which sound like originals which is what it's all about as well as being a great rock & roll band in their own right.

Joe Cockers "With a little help from my friends". He didn't just cover it, he reinterprted it. At the risk of being lynched I Would say its the only cover better than the original (and maybe Shirley Basseys "Something")

Gomez are a great group...They seem to have had their time here in UK..I've seen them live twice..Each time amazing. great vocals...very Uni kinda vibe.
Their first album Bring It On is definitely worth a check. ;)

Micheal Jackson did a version of Come Together also, not as bad as you think, his voice went along well with it and he hired some damn good guitarist and bassist so it sounds better good.

Defintely worth a check.

a great cover of Drive My Car was done by an unknown band : Stray Dog.
Their 1st album is still one of the best albums ever made. Anyway...they do a great version of Drive My Car. If you can find it..it's well worth the effort.

The Sgt Peppers (BeeGee's movie) fiasco had tons of Beatle covers by popular artists Alice Cooper did "Because" previously mentioned Aerosmith "Come Together"  Look for the discography from the movie! The movie stunk but the songs rocked I think Billy Preston did a couple in the movie also!! I think was it Sara Maglauchlan did Blackbird! John Lennon said Ann Murrays version of his song was his favorite version!

It's not a cover,it's not even a band. The most moving rendition of a Beatles song that I've ever seen was by a young East German student shortly after the Berlin wall came down. It was on Nightline. He did an accoustic guitar version of Eight Days a Week and his singing brought me to tears. The whole situation was very emotional. He said Beatles music was one of the things that got smuggled into East Germany, the communists banned it,but everybody got a hold of it anyway. He was so happy that he could now openly buy their records and sing their songs. He said The Beatles were one of the great symbols of freedom. He sang that song with pure joy. I've loved Eight Days a Week-any version of it-ever since.

As much as Paul loved the George and the Beatles, I'll bet he was at least wondering what it would be like to have Jimi Hendrix as his lead guitarist ...

I wasn't sure if I should put this is an existing topic or not, so I guess the mods can merge it if they want.

Anyway, I went to the movies today to see 'Men Who Stare At Goats' (wasn't crazy about it) and in the previews before the movie, I saw one for a new movie called 'Did You Hear About the Morgans?'. The movie actually looks pretty decent (for a rom-com that is), but in the trailer, there's a TERRIBLE cover of 'We Can Work It Out'. I was so mad when I heard it because that's one of my all time favorite Beatles song. Why can't they just leave them the way they are?

This is hands down my favorite Beatles cover:
Ramallah- A Day In The Life (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tR6CC4SAs5s#normal)

Why? Because they take the song to an entirely different musical genre while staying surprisingly faithful to the original. They turned it into a an incredibly dark, loud and mean monster but essentially it's still the same old 'A Day In The Life'. I think it's incredibly creative how they managed to translate this song to this genre while staying so close to the original structure and uarrangement. The "sugarplum fairy" intro is a nice detail.

Anyone heard some good covers of Beatles songs?  I heard one of Ray Charles doing "Let It Be."  It was really good.  I've also heard that Aerosmith did a cover of "Come Together."

I like Elton John's version of Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds better than the original. Of course John is on both versions!

Buddy Holly sings A day in the life (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsPJq0Xomxw#)

Of course, it is not Buddy singing - it's just sung in Buddy's style - a mash-up of Beatles' and Buddy's style.
The band is called Big Daddy.
Hope you'll like it.

Ok, I love this cover because the band is having so much fun on the stage with all that jumping - plus, there is crazy ending.
And Gwen Stefani is - no doubt - cute.

I've been trying to figure out if Ringo's version of "I Call Your Name" has ever been officially released. I know it was from a British television special honoring John's 50th birthday but I first heard it on Pandora radio so I assumed that it was released. The only place I can find it is on a bootleg album. I really like it and I just want to pay my $1.25 or whatever and have it; I don't want to mess around with all that other stuff!

I guess I'm not the only one who likes it!

I like the way The Mamas and The Papas did the song too...cabaret style! This is a bit abbreviated compared to their album version:

The album version:

I always wondered which John Cass was calling during the bridge; Phillips or Lennon but knowing her feelings for Denny I'd now guess it was the songwriter John!

Ooo...I forgot about this folkier version. Love it too.

It seems that the Flaming Lips love Beatles.
This is Strawberry Fields. I'd wish it had better sound quality.

The only cover versions I prefer to The Beatles originals are:

Billy J. Kramer's "Do You Want To Know A Secret?"
and
Siouxsie & The Banshees' "Dear Prudence"

Here is my guilty pleasure, haunting...almost spooky in fact...but to me, mesmerising:

So, there is a tribute band (with a girl as a lead vocal) and they do the covers of John's demo songs that he did in 1980.
Actually, they issued an album titled 'Estefy Lennon Band 1981' - with selection of John's songs of that period.

And I always wanted to hear John's accoustic stuff in full, studio version with guitars, drums, piano etc. - exactly the thing this band does!

Tracklist:

One of the Boys
India India
Grow Old with Me
Whatever Happened To
She's a Friend of Dorothy
Help Me to Help Myself
Life Begins at 40
You Saved My Soul

The album is available on Amazon and other music stores (Deezer etc.) so I guess it is issued legally.

My favourites are Help Me To Help Myself, She's A Friend of Dorothy and India, India.

'You Saved My Soul' is one of the most beautiful John's unfinished songs (he played in on electric guitar without any other instruments).
Estefy Lennon Band did their version. They made it into ballad - while John played in more 'firm'. I'd wish their version would be closer to John's idea - but hey - we've finally got the 'full' studio
version of this nice song!  cheer1
