Title: The White Album as a Single Album...
Post by: Frightwolf on September 07, 2004, 08:52:42 PM
If you could remove all "filler" OR if you could only have your favorite songs from the WA and make it into a fantastically-fantastic single album, how would you do it? (14 songs for the album)

Wasn't it going to be a single album but they decided to make it a double to help fulfill their contract about how many lps they must produce?

I'd choose:

1.  Dear Prudence
2. Ob la di Ob la da
3.  While My Guitar Gently Weeps
4. Happiness is a Warm Gun
5.  Martha My Dear
6.  I'm So Tired
7.  Blackbird
8.  Rocky Racoon
9.  I Will
10.  Julia
11.  Mother Nature's Son
12.  Helter Skelter
13.  Long Long Long
14.  Cry Baby Cry

1. BackIn The USSR
2. Dear Prudence
3. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
4. Happiness Is A Warm Gun
5. Martha My Dear
6. Im So Tired
7. Blackbird
8. Piggies
9. Julia
10. Everybodies Got Something To Hide
11. Helter Skelter

My versions only got four paul songs. I didnt do that on purpose. I think i prefer the double album though. All those funny little songs give the white album its weird quirky atmosphere.

I think the White Album stands on a pedistal above all of their other albums... It's so different... It runs so well... Sometime, when I'm in another state of mind, my mind is completely open when I listen to the whole thing through... I love every SINGLE song on it, including Revolution 9... I just can't express with my vocabulary the beauty in this album... They're all on top of their games and they just all sound wonderful...

My version of the White Album:

1. Back In The USSR
2. Dear Prudence
3. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
4. Sexy Sadie
5. Rocky Raccoon
6. Yer Blues
7. Long Long Long
8. Helter Skelter
9. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
10. Revolution 1
11. Blackbird
12. Don't Pass Me By
13. Hey Jude (with intro from Anthology disc 3)
14. Good Night

And that is one helluva White Album... Took me one half hour to compile.  8)

It shall be called... The Off-White Album...

I think that the White Album is fine as it is. If the Beatles decided to release it as a double album, it's beacuse they thought all the songs were good enough to be there.
Title: Re: The White Album as a Single Album...
Post by: Frightwolf on November 30, 2004, 01:10:44 AM
But the point, Sadie, is to remove all filler (if you think there is any) or to pick your 14 favorites.  So many people are coming in saying, "It's a Masterpiece on it's own" that it's defeating the purpose of the thread, because no one is questioning how great the album is.

To kinda quote Joe from a long time: This is not a life/death decision.  No one's holding you at gunpoint if you change the album incorrectly -- it's for fun.

OK, trying to construct it like a Beatles album (2 George, 1 Ringo), I would go with this.

1.  Back In The USSR
2.  Dear Prudence
3.  While My Guitar Gently Weeps
4.  Happiness Is A Warm Gun
5.  Blackbird
6.  Julia
7.  I'm So Tired
8.  Sexy Sadie
9.  Helter Skelter
10. Savoy Truffle
11. Birthday
12. Yer Blues
13. I Will
14. Goodnight

It's very hard, though.  I left off some pretty good stuff and the sprawling nature of the album is what makes it so good, IMO.

6.While My Guitar Gently Weeps
7.Helter Skelter
8.Rocky Racoon
9.Blackbird
10.Savoy Truffle

"Dear Prudence"
"Blackbird"
"While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
"Revolution"
"Happiness Is A Warm Gun"
"Julia"
"I Will"
"Birthday"

Cut out some of the sillier stuff (Wild Honey Pie) and some of McCartney's poorer songs, and you have (arguably) the best Beatles album ever.

As it stands, it just scrapes into the top 5.

Hmm..for the White album, the die is cast as far as I'm concerned. But here's my list:

Side 1
1 Back In The USSR
2 Dear Prudence
3 Honey Pie
4 Happiness Is A Warm Gun
5 Yer Blues
6 Mother Nature's Son
7 Blackbird

Side 2
1 Helter Skelter
2 Long Long Long
3 Everybody's Got Something To Hide...
4 Martha My Dear
5 Sexy Sadie
6 While My Guitar Gently Weeps
7 Revolution 9

I wouldn't be able to decide on just 14 songs from the White album. I'd be able to choose a few to get rid of right away, like Revolution 9 and Wild Honey Pie, but after that it would get a bit harder.

I've read the George Martin wanted to trim the White Album down to a single disc, but I'm glad they didn't.  It seems we all have very different ideas about which songs to cut and which songs to keep.

Back in the U.S.S.R.
Dear Prudence
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Martha My Dear
I'm So Tired
Rocky Raccoon
Don't Pass Me By
Why Don't We Do It in the Road?
I Will
Birthday
Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey
Sexy Sadie
Helter Skelter
Long, Long, Long

I like the White Album, but it's not one of my favorites.  There's some great stuff on there, but there's a lot of stuff I find unlistenable also.

Wild Honey Pie

Revolution 9
These three song could have waited til the Anthology...lol
Title: Re: The White Album as a Single Album...

I think this would be the perfect single album:

1. Back In The U.S.S.R.
2. Dear Prudence
3. Don't Pass Me By
4. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
5. Revolution 1
6. Sexy Sadie
7. Helter Skelter
8. Long, Long, Long
9. I'm So Tired
10. Mother Nature's Son
11. Blackbird
12. Happiness Is A Warm Gun
13. Yer Blues
14. Julia

That was a real tough choice actually, the sequencing of the songs was difficult to get so it wasn't too repetitive. The 2nd side of the album is more acoustic. But over all my choice for a real strong single album would be this and it would be a very acoustic oriented album.

^ Nice choice, and like the way you've obeyed the Beatle "rules" - strong opener, George song each side, 1 Ringo and a good mix of Paul and John. Which song finishes side 1, HS or Long Long Long (shame to break those up)

Pretend you're George Martin (or whoever is the one who decides what songs go on the album, I'm sure its not the band), and its 1968, and you have to decide which 13 songs out of all the songs recorded to go on the new Beatles self-titled album.

Here I go (wish me luck):

01: Back In The USSR
02: Dear Prudence
03: Glass Onion
04: Ob La Di, Ob La Da
05: While My Guitar Gently Weeps
06: I'm So Tired
07: Piggies
08: Birthday
09: Sexy Sadie
10: Helter Skelter
11: Revolution 1
12: Savoy Truffle
13: Cry Baby Cry

I think the White Album is a nice showcase for George Harrison's songs, as he has three in my selections.  This selection of songs would have made it a nice, tight, diverse album - from acoustic ballads to hard ass rock.

What would you choose?

Nice call, but Beatle politics wouldn't have allowed it. Seven John songs and only three from Paul? And no Ringo? I think you've just broken up The Beatles! No Abbey Road!! What have you done!!!!

Nice call, but Beatle politics wouldn't have allowed it. Seven John songs and only three from Paul? And no Ringo? I think you've just broken up The Beatles! No Abbey Road!! What have you done!!!!

The "Let It Be" album had no Ringo, and they survived ...opps.

i would have preferred a triple album

I agree completely with you! Just think about it. The Beatles releasing the first triple album ever! Consider that they were releasing all 35-minute albums until then, so two records of 47 minutes put it together is maybe too much. This is my triple album:

Side one
1. "Back in the U.S.S.R."

What song is Take Me Back??
Side 1
1. Back in the USSR
2. Dear Prudence
3. Obladi Blada
4. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
5. Happiness is a Warm Gun
6. I'm So Tired
7. Rocky Racoon
Side 2
1. Why Don't we do it in the Road
2. Birthday
3. Everybody's got Something to Hide Except for me and my Monkey
4. Sexy Sadie
5. Helter Skelter
6. Long, Long,Long
7.Honey Pie

There was no Ringo on A Hard Day's Night and Let it Be,it'll be Ok here too.

personally, I think it's an imbecilic theory that TWA would've been better as a single album..

the whole thought is predicated on some misguided "concept" of late-60's minimalism that contends "lesser is better". I disagree strongely. Perhaps in some graphic art expressions this "economical" approach might be amenable, but why limit a rock band's intended output(and in the present case, the world's greatest) to some dubious time restriction (on the grounds of "artsy" pretension), when the extant 2-Lp set turned out to be a treasure- trove of brilliance no one's ever equalled? When Paul HIMSELF was asked this question, he seemed justifiably annoyed and retorted (I'm paraphrasing) "Single-album, double-album, it's the bloody Beatles White Album, for crying out loud...shut-up!!.."
LOL On this point, I'm w/ Macca 100%.

dems my 2 cents.

You are right, but I don't think that most of us think it should've been 1 album, we're just saying what we think it should be if we turned it onto one album.  Personally, I prefer the double album, but it's basically just stating your fav 14 tracks on the White Album

Keeping singles off the albums was a mistake.  It was done for the benefit of the fans, but it hurt albums all the way through their career.  Imagine what those "100 best" lists would look like if the Beatles could have included Hey Jude and other treasures.
Even George Martin said keeping SFF and Penny Lane off of Pepper was his greatest mistake.  Imagine what that album would've been --adding perhaps their greatest double-A side to an already legendary album.
With all that in mind, I'd leave "The White Album" as it was, 2 discs, with the exception of pulling off #9 and Cry Baby Cry, and inserting Hey Jude, Revolution (the single) and Lady Madonna.

I Completely Agree.(except maybe Good Night also) I also thought that maybe Hey Bulldog should've been put on this album. I don't think that that song gets the recognition it deserves, it's a rocker and I think maybe if they rewrote it (or maybe not) it could've been a #1 Single in my opinion.

Hey Bulldog was written and recorded for the Yellow Submarine movie long before they even went to India, in Feb '68, around the same time as Lady Madonna. Why should that be on The White Album? And why does it need rewriting?

I Know that it was written for Yellow Submarine, but im saying that it would be better(in my opinion) if it was on the White Album.  Just because it was written before India doesn't mean it can't go on the White Album, and the Yellow Submarine Album had songs from Revolver(like Yellow Submarine) that came before. I just think that it would be nice if it were on the White Album( Which is already magnificent), like Lady Madonna.
( Im just saying that it would be pretty cool, you know, thats it)

I was just saying that I think that Hey Bulldog is #1 single record material and if it were released as is that it could reach #1, I suppose I thought that people would think that it doesn't make sense and they wouldnt like it, but, yeah, I guess I was wrong on thinking that and it doesn't need rewriting sorry :B

I always thought "Revolution #9" was perfect where it is (even though it is a weird, audio montage--always felt it was a perfect segway between the songs that preceeded and followed it)

BUT, having said that, I really, really like the songs you chose above if it had been replaced.

Excellent choices. ("Hey Jude" DEFINITELY should've been on TWA)

Incredibly tough task!!!! But here is my revised White Album;

Side one...

1. Back in the USSR
2. Yer Blues
3. While my guitar gently weeps
4. I'm so tired
5. Why don't we do it in the road?
6. Revolution 1
7. Helter Skelter

Side two...
1. Happiness is a warm gun
2. Birthday
3. Mother nature's son
4. Julia
5. Martha my dear
6. Long, long, long
7. Good night

There you have it....a cracking first side, loud and punchy and a much quieter second side after the first two songs!!! Two George, One Ringo, Five Paul, Five John and one Paul and John (Birthday). A good Beatle balance I reckon....but seriously, the White Album is PERFECT as it is!!!!!!!!!!

Hope I'm doing this reply correctly.

Blue, perhaps "hurt" is a tough concept to deal with, since their albums were so near perfect.  But think about having the singles on the albums.  What album wouldn't be helped by She Loves You, I Want to Hold Your Hand, etc.?  We Can Work It Out?  Day Tripper?  Keeping those off albums was part of the times -- I'm not arguing that -- but their inclusion helps any album.

My point was, Pepper, cultural landmark that it is, could have been better by adding Penny Lane and SFF.  I'm sorry, but that's a fact.

Someone else can tell you which albums the singles would have gone on, because I don't have the encyclopedic knowledge of recording sessions/release dates.

But reverse engineer it, for a sec.  Imagine a White Album with Hey Jude, Lady Madonna and Revolution, and make the argument that it would've been better with #9.  Good luck.

Actually, no. I don't agree. Those albums didn't need any help. All you've done is mention singles that weren't on albums. Do you think those albums were lacking, and needed them? I don't. Only Beatles For Sale could have benefited. IMO, of course. Happy Xmas! :)

Interesting blog here about creating 'the perfect' White album: http://www.myspace.com/chrissingleton

The idea is to cut the album down to your favourite 12-14 songs...if you could bear it! Blog on the page is called "Your very own White Album".

I didn't read every post in this thread, but I think I understand the case you're making.

I don't think there is a steadfast rule about it... sometimes adding the songs would "help", sometimes it would "hurt".   So what do I mean by this?

Well, the flow of an album is sometimes as important as the individual songs it contains, and the inclusion of a (great) song (that might have been a huge hit) that breaks this flow may in fact leave you with an album that is significantly "inferior" to what it was.  A White Album with Hey Jude, Lady Madonna and Revolution might work, but adding Penny Lane and SFF to Sgt Pepper might not, because that album is greater than the sum of it's parts precisely because of how it flows.

Adding Helen Wheels to Band On The Run worked, and fortunately did not disrupt the flow of the album. But the US album Hey Jude was just a bunch of singles and b-sides  had no flow at all. The Ballad of John and Yoko might have ruined Abbey Road or Let It Be. But I like the flow of "Let It Be Naked" better than the original with the inclusion of  "Don't Let Me Down" (which should have been on the original Let It Be).

It's hard to say. If adding the single doesn't break the flow of the album, but enhances it or at least maintains it, it's certainly better to have the popular songs on there. I couldn't imagine Band on the Run without Helen Wheels, or MMT without PL and SFF.

I am intrigued by a White Album with Hey Jude, Lady Madonna and Revolution and without Revolution #9 though....

Theres so much good stuff on there it's hard to part with some of it. I didn't count who had more songs than whom, and didn't include a song for Ringo just to give Ringo a song because I think there are much better songs by the others that were left off. I added "Hey Jude" and "Lady  Madonna" and eliminated the "extreme" songs

JJS's White Album:

"Back in the U.S.S.R."
"Dear Prudence"
"While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
"I'm So Tired"
"Blackbird"
"Lady Madonna"
"Julia"
"Birthday"
"Sexy Sadie"
"Helter Skelter"
"Revolution 1"
"Hey Jude"

I wish I could "play" this thread but I can't.  To me, there's just no "filler" on the White Album.

The "single-album v. double album" discussion reminds me of that scene in Amadeus when, in his critique of Mozart's opera, the emperor tells Mozart that there are "simply too many notes."  To which Mozart replies:  "I don't understand.  There are just as many notes, Majesty, as are required.  Neither more nor less."

I feel the same way about the White Album (".....number nine...number nine...number nine...number nine...").

Happiness Is A Warm Gun

Side 2
Revolution (single version)

Hey Jude
Good Night

A nice balance which keeps some of the original sequencing ideas and includes the single.  Perhaps Hey
Jude should finish the album, but then you wouldn't have Ringo's track to close it and wish us all a good night.

This is too long, there's too many tracks to lose though (though as rule a third of cd 1 I think is superflous) and the sequencing is the real genuis - and I consider R9 the centre-piece of the album. So - no, I dont think you can change the White Album into a single without too much sacrifice

Going back to what jjs said all those months ago, making TWA into a single album isn't about picking your favourite songs, or necessarily the 'best' songs. It's all about the flow, and if that means that some 'essential' songs have to be left out, then so be it. There are always singles. b-sides, and EP's. I spent some time on this and here's what I came up with:

Back In The U.S.S.R.
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
I Will
Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey
I'm So Tired
Martha My Dear
Yer Blues
(22.13)

Revolution 1
Blackbird
Sexy Sadie
Happiness Is A Warm Gun
Long, Long, Long
Helter Skelter
(20.34)

I've had this arrangement on my iPod for a couple of weeks now, and it seems to work pretty well. I've paid no attention to the number of Paul song's vs John's, and there's no Ringo song. All I was concerned with was making a 40+ minute album of two sides that worked. In fact, I've left a couple of my favourite songs off: 'Ob-Bla-Di', and 'Glass Onion'. And I'm not over fond of 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps', but it seems to work coming right after 'Back In The USSR'. Heaven knows why 'Ob-Bla-Di' wasn't released as a single in the UK and US, if Marmalade can have a huge hit with it think how many The Beatles would have sold.

Hi guys.  Don't know if you are interested but a Beatles-mad member of the music site I run recently wrote a piece on his difficulty in attempting to prove/disprove the age old White Album-in-one-disk theory.  Interested to see what you guys think! Its a very good read, even if you don't agree....!

Anyone who doesn't include, "Long, Long Long"...I don't know. i just question whether you've actually given the song a chance. I know because at one point I hadn't either. I used to just skip over it, but one day I stumbled upon it and listened to it, and I fell in love. I probably consider it my favorite song of George's, and certainly in my top 10 Beatles songs of all time, possibly top five. It just hurts to see how people would ever think of leaving if off of any album. From beginning to end, it's completely wonderful. I'm not even a religious man, and it almost brings a tear to my eye to hear George singing about his devotion to God with such a peaceful yet raging allegiance. It's just so unique. I know of no song to compare it with.

But then again, we all have differing opinions, I guess, and each song touches us differently. I suppose that's what makes the Beatles such a great band.

I am intrigued by a White Album with Hey Jude, Lady Madonna and Revolution and without Revolution #9 though....

jjs -- Try this.  I assume you have an iPod, and can build a playlist.  (I'll get hanged for daring to suggest such a thing, but ...)

For sides 3 and 4 of the White Album:

Birthday
YerBlues
Mother Nature's Son
Everybody's Got Something To Hide, Except Me and My Monkey
Lady Madonna
Sexy Sadie
Helter Skelter
Long, Long, Long

Revolution
Honey Pie
Revolution #1
Savoy Truffle
Hey Jude
Good Night

As to the "flow" of albums -- had you never heard Pepper without SFF/PL, you'd cry your eyes out with them missing.  You have to put yourself in a different frame of mind, and imagine these albums with their missing singles.  Let's try it this way:  Take Come Together and Something off of Abbey Road, and replace them with two other things they were working on -- say, "Junk" and "Teddy Boy."  Then tell me it was better they were singles.

To again appease the masses, I have no problem with their albums.  Phenonomenal.  My six favrorite albums are Beatles albums.  But while we're fantasizing ... let me fantasize.  :-)

Well I dunno really, I just really like those tracks. Bungalow Bill is good because of all four Beatles singing in the chorus, and because Yoko delivers her only non-ear-shattering line ever. I don't know why I like Piggies, guess it's just a fun George tune. And I like Rocky and Honey Pie because I just love the versatility in Pauls voice; how he can change from a rocker such as Helter Skelter, to a soft jazzy tune like Honey Pie.

The White Album is my second favorite Beatles album.
And that says alot since I LOVE all of their albums.
I even consider the obvious filler an essential part of the experience.

And I really tried to narrow down the songs to 14.
But there is so many great songs heren that 14 is just not enough.
Maybe that's why I love it so much.
And even if it's so diverse and all over the place it still has a great flow.
And some of the transitions are amazing. Especially Back In the U.S.S.R to Dear Prudence and Bungalow Bill to While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

If I made a 14 song single album I would have to leave off such amazing songs as Glass Onion, Martha My Dear, Long, Long, Long and I Will

I just can't do it.

The White Album is the best double album ever made.
Why change it?

I've got multiple single-disk White Album playlists on my iPod, and they're pretty much covered by other people's suggestions! ;D

But what I did after reading the list is created two more, focusing not on best songs, most played songs, or favorite songs (even if quirky).  Instead, I did one that focuses on the harder edged songs, and one that is softer (and they're cool to listen to this way).

The White Album with an edge:

Side A (21:05)
1.  Back in the USSR
2.  Why Don't We Do It In the Road
3.  Yer Blues
4.  Everybody's Got Something to Hide. . .
5.  Sexy Sadie
6.  Glass Onion
7.  While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Side B (20.07)
1.  Happiness Is a Warm Gun
2.  Birthday
3.  Revolution 1
4.  Savoy Truffle
5.  Cry Baby Cry
6.  Helter Skelter  (Great way to leave the album!)

And a softer album:

Side A (20:37)
1.  Can You Take Me Back/Blackbird (I really like this combination :))
2.  I'm So Tired
3.  Piggies
4.  Dear Prudence
5.  Martha My Dear
6.  Sexy Sadie
7.  Mother Nature's Son
8.  I Will

Side B (21:40)

1.  Ob-La-Di
2.  Rocky Raccoon
3.  Julia
4.  Long, Long, Long
5.  Honey Pie
6.  Cry Baby Cry
7.  Good Night

That's a very interesting idea. Myself I'd like to have a group orientated album and a solo orientated album.

For the group album I'd suggest :

Back in the USSR
Dear Prudence
Happiness Is A Warm Gun
Birthday
Obladi Oblada
Bungalow Bill
While my Guitar Gently weeps

Glass onion
Yer Blues
Me and my Monkey
Savoy truffle
Don't pass Me By
Revolution 1
Helter Skelter

This fulfils the criteria of 14 songs, two George songs and one Ringo song which I prefer for a group album.

For the solo album I'm still working on it.

I'm bored and decided to make a try at this anyway.

1. Back In the U.S.S.R
2. Dear Prudence
3. Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da
4. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
5. Happiness is a Warm Gun
6. Blackbird
7. Don't Pass Me By
8. Sexy Sadie
9. Helter Skelter
10. Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey
11. I'm So Tired
12. Mother Nature's Son
13. Long, Long, Long
14. Julia

Damn that was though, still many great song left. But these seems like the best one disc album right now.

On the other hand, I reckon they should have made it a 34 song album - 17 on each disc - therefore to include unrecognised classics such Not Guilty, Circles, What's The New Mary Jane, Sour Milk Sea etc.

Putting together a Beatle album is a science and as such, there is a simple way to put together a single "White Album."

1) Side-starters should be uptempo and side-enders should be climactic.

2)Songs like "I Will" would have never survived a more scrutinizing Lennon eye, as it's inclusion would have been at the expense of a "harder," more group-involved effort.

3) George has to have at least one song.

4) Ringo does not.

1. "Back in the U.S.S.R."   McCartney 2:43
2. "Dear Prudence"   Lennon 3:56
3. "Glass Onion"   Lennon 2:17
4. "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da"   McCartney 3:08
5. "Wild Honey Pie"   McCartney 0:53
6. "The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill"   Lennon 3:14
7. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" (George Harrison) Harrison 4:45
8. "Happiness Is a Warm Gun"
1. "Martha My Dear"   McCartney 2:28
2. "I'm So Tired"   Lennon 2:03
3. "Blackbird"   McCartney 2:18
4. "Piggies" (Harrison) Harrison 2:04
5. "Rocky Raccoon"   McCartney 3:32

6. "Don't Pass Me By" (Richard Starkey) Starr 3:50
7. "Why Don't We Do It in the Road?"   McCartney 1:41

8. "I Will"   McCartney 1:46
9. "Julia"   Lennon 2:54
1. "Birthday"   McCartney with Lennon 2:42
2. "Yer Blues"   Lennon 4:01
3. "Mother Nature's Son"   McCartney 2:48
4. "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey"   Lennon 2:24
5. "Sexy Sadie"   Lennon 3:15
6. "Helter Skelter"   McCartney 4:29
7. "Long, Long, Long" (Harrison) Harrison 3:04
1. "Revolution 1"   Lennon 4:15

2. "Honey Pie"   McCartney 2:41
3. "Savoy Truffle" (Harrison) Harrison 2:54
4. "Cry Baby Cry"   Lennon, with McCartney 3:01
5. "Revolution 9"     8:22
6. "Good Night"   Starr 3:11

That leaves us with (with sequencing amazingly intact):

1. "Back in the U.S.S.R."   McCartney 2:43
2. "Dear Prudence"   Lennon 3:56
3. "Glass Onion"   Lennon 2:17
4. "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da"   McCartney 3:08
5. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" (George Harrison) Harrison 4:45
6. "Happiness Is a Warm Gun"  Lennon 2:43
7. "Martha My Dear"   McCartney 2:28
8. "I'm So Tired"   Lennon 2:03
9. "Blackbird"   McCartney 2:18
10. "Julia"   Lennon 2:54
11. "Birthday"   McCartney with Lennon 2:42
12. "Yer Blues"   Lennon 4:01
13. "Mother Nature's Son"   McCartney 2:48
14. "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey"   Lennon 2:24
15. "Sexy Sadie"   Lennon 3:15

Splitting into two album sides:

SIDE ONE

1. "Back in the U.S.S.R."   McCartney 2:43
2. "Dear Prudence"   Lennon 3:56
3. "Glass Onion"   Lennon 2:17
4. "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da"   McCartney 3:08
5. "Martha My Dear"   McCartney 2:28
6. "I'm So Tired"   Lennon 2:03
7. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" (George Harrison) Harrison 4:45

SIDE TWO

1. "Birthday"   McCartney with Lennon 2:42
2. "Yer Blues"   Lennon 4:01
3. "Mother Nature's Son"   McCartney 2:48
4. "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey"   Lennon 2:24
5. "Sexy Sadie"   Lennon 3:15
6. "Blackbird"   McCartney 2:18
7. "Julia"   Lennon 2:54
8. "Happiness Is a Warm Gun"  Lennon 2:43

A little Lennon-heavy (8 John, 6 Paul), but as good as it gets.

Nice. But are you sure about number two. He never managed (or as far as I know even tried) to get other McCartney songs he reckons he hated dropped. I'm not sure Lennon's role was one of scrutinizer, or that he had the power (or the will or desire) to prevent a Macca song going on an album (I've not seen any evidence that this ever happened. Only evidence that McCartney was able to veto Lennon's more political numbers.)
An image of Lennon as some defacto quality control officer doesn't seem to tie up with the reality of the groups dynamics. (especially in 1968)

The rest of the Beatles were quite intimidated by John, and while it's true in the later years he pretty much abdicated any leadership role, Geoff Emerick in his book stated that in these sessions John's personality was more aggressive than he had seen before and seemed to be on a mission. There are a bunch of songs on McCartney's early solo albums that didn't survive the White Album cut. I'm sure the others had a say.

And what "political numbers" of Lennon's were ever "vetoed" by McCartney?

Oops. But we know he presented Cold Turkey to the band and it was rejected. And they rejected Revolution as a single. And John was narked that Walrus was flipped for Hello Goodbye. And he moans that Paul songs got more attention in the studio than his. I know of no other comparable stories concerning Paul's music. But I accept as I worded it it may be a little wrong.
Anyways, yes some of Paul's songs were dropped (as were some of the others.) But how can you assume this was on Lennon's say so? Sorry, but I find this image that John was somehow the true hard rock and roller with the power to reject McCartney fluff incompatable with the facts. It just seems to be wishful thinking. Lennon tells of those miserable hours sitting through Maxwell's Silver Hammer, yet he couldn't/wouldn't stop it. Phew.
Agression doesn't equal power (ask my cat.)
Hello by the way.

"Cold Turkey" was hardly a "political song" and I think it's rejection as a single was more a result of the other three rejecting it more than a thumbs down from Fuhrer Paul.

I have no image of John's being the "true hard rock and roller" and really don't see what that has to do with the "power to reject." If anything John's "power to reject" was more in McCartney's head (as it was even after the breakup), as he was unlikely to even propose songs like "Junk" and "Every Night," never mind having to endure the "public" Lennon ridicule songs like "Teddy Boy" got during the filming of "Let It Be."

McCartney's purported "leadership" of the Beatles after Epstein's death owed as much, if not more, to John's unwillingness to continue the charade as anything else.

For all intents and purposes the group known as "the Beatles" died somewhere in Rishikesh in early 1968. What Paul did after that was to push and cajole three increasingly disinterested people into the studio to make records for a band that existed more contractually than spiritually.

Or maybe that after touring ended, and until he fell under Yoko's influence, that he simply had no Big Ideas. (and as we know post Yoko John wasn't averse to the odd Big Idea.) Supposition yes, but I'm not trying to pass it off as fact.
Maybe Paul was embarrassed by some of his music (as he should have been, some of it was awful.)
But again, you seem to assume it's a given that John had the power to have "I Will" rejected. Perhaps, yes, if John and George and George Martin had had a word. Or maybe Paul would have dropped it himself.
I accept that Paul alone couldn't reject John's efforts. After all John managed to get Rev #9 past all three, plus George Martin. So if Paul had insisted that I Will should stay (and he would have been terribly stupid if he had) how do you know John could have said no? Any examples? Yesterday wasn't a "harder, group effort."
And you make Paul's efforts to keep the band alive sound like a bad thing. Would you rather he hadn't bothered and The Beatles story ended at Revolver?
ps - I agree by the way that I Will should go. It's fluff. But I don't think John had the power to make that happen. It would be Paul's (as it was his song) or the group's decision.
I agree my "political veto" comment was ill judged. But at that point you seemed to be insinuating that John had the final say on what The Beatles did, and nothing indicates that was the case.

That's the thing about the White Album. If it was a single album, all the crazy little ditties and dumb songs that I love would be gone. Honey Pie, I Will, Goodnight, and heck, even Revolution 9 have a place in the Beatles catalogue.

There's nothing written - by reputable sources - to suggest that John ever had the power over the others to veto anything. Or that they had power to veto his songs. It was a group effort, and when it came to The White Album I'm sure that there was a lot of give and take; you can have that, if I can have this. You can interpret all you like - and we'll never know the truth - but it seems to me that aside from The Whit Album, the good stuff got through, and the bad stuff was rejected.

Thanks. Perhaps someday you can show me the ones you've read that prove John was a submissive pu$$ycat.

No one's saying he was a submissive girl privatecat. Just that he had no more power over track selection than did Paul (twas you that said I Will would not have survived John's scrutinising eye.) and that these decisions, when made,  seem to have been a group effort.
I also doubt the line that Paul assumed the role of alpha Beatle because John "lost interest." It seems to me that after they signed that contract in 1962 no one had that role. Apart from music issues all decisions were made for them. They did what they were told, when they were told. Apart from the (admittedly climatic) decision to abandon touring ( a group decision? ) how did John assert his alpha role? He was for a while the better, more prolific songwriter, but  that's not the same thing. When Epstein died John didn't step down from the plate because he wasn't on it in the first place. Paul took up a role abandoned by Epstein, not Lennon.
And lets imagine "Fuhrer Paul" had adopted the same attitude as Lennon, if he hadn't continued to "push and cajole three increasingly disinterested people." Another Revolver album of great but disconnected songs (no Pepper), and no MMT. Had "the Beatles died somewhere in Rishikesh in early 1968" then there swansong may well have been Yellow Submarine!
Should we not celebrate the fact that Paul managed to push "push and cajole three increasingly disinterested people" into making two of rock's classic albums (White and Abbey Road) ?

^ Well said. I'm getting increasingly tired of putting this point accross.

Surely every Beatles fan has attempted this at one time or another. Here's my (current) effort:

1. Back In The USSR
2. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
3. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
4. Happiness Is A Warm Gun
5. Martha My Dear
6. I'm So Tired
7. Blackbird
8. Yer Blues
9. Mother Nature's Son
10. Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey
11. Sexy Sadie
12. Honey Pie
13. Savoy Truffle
14. Cry Baby Cry

I deliberately tried to do it without any conscious attempt at being "fair" or "democratic", although as it's worked out it splits 6 John, 6 Paul and 2 George.... which isn't too bad come to think of it.

Sorry Ringo.

1-Back in the U.S.S.R
2-Dear Prudence
3-Glass Onion
4-Martha My Dear
5-Happiness Is A Warm Gun
6-Blackbird
7-Julia
8-While My Guitar Gently Weeps
9-Birthday
10-Mother Nature's Son
11-Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except For Me And My Monkey
12-Sexy Sadie
13-Helter Skelter
14-I'm So Tired
15-Goodnight

I would have liked to have had anohter George song on there namely Piggies and Don't pass me by just for the sentimental reason Ringo wrote it but Goodnight is a good closer so had to go with that.

01. Back In The U.S.S.R
02. Dear Prudence
03. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
04. Happiness Is A Warm Gun
05. Martha My Dear
06. I'm So Tired
07. Blackbird

08. Rocky Racoon
09. Julia
10. Mother Nature's Son
11. Sexy Sadie
12. Helter Skelter
13. Long, Long, Long
14. Cry Baby Cry

This would be my ideal 'White Album', but if I had to be realistic, I'd add 'Good Night' at the end and eliminate 'Rocky Racoon', so this way Ringo would have a song.
