Title: Gilbert and Sullivan
Post by: Dmitry on July 24, 2012, 07:54:42 AM
Have you heard operas of librettist W.S. Gilbert and the composer Arthur Sullivan?

I wasn't familiar with any English opera before, but yesterday I've heard H.M.S. Pinafore (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.M.S._Pinafore) which is quite interesting and funny. It is a comic opera!

You can listen to the whole thing:

Or just listen to one track: http://www.deezer.com/music/track/11975195 (http://www.deezer.com/music/track/11975195)

What do you think?

They're great. In many ways their work can be thought of as the precursor to the modern musical comedy.

Check out 'The Mikado' - my fave.

Also, if you can get the movie 'Topsy Turvy' - came out in the late nineties - it tells their story in part, especially dealing with the time during the creation and production of 'The Mikado.' Very insightful and amusing.

It's about class struggle...and the boundaries of love.  It's a magnificent light opera!  How did you come across it, Dmitry?

You'd like The Pirates of Penzance too.

I found out about Gilbert and Sullivan accidentally, when I read Operas Every Child Should Know (http://www.gutenberg.org/files/28711/28711-h/28711-h.htm), a book from 1911. I was looking for some e-books on opera music at Amazon, and found it. Partly interesting book  ;)

I have listened to 'The Mikado' but I like 'H.M.S. Pinafore' more. I don't understand quite well all what they sing, so I like music and voices more in 'Pinafore'. I will listen 'The Pirates of Penzance' next week, after I return from Ryazan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryazan).

Dmitry, a great resource for H.M.S. Pinafore can be found here:  http://diamond.boisestate.edu/gas/pinafore/html/ (http://diamond.boisestate.edu/gas/pinafore/html/)

You can download the libretto and follow along.

I think the nicest production is that of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company Chorus and the London Symphony Orchestra.  It's on YouTube...

Dmitry,  when I was 16 and a waiter at a summer camp, the older teenagers put on H.M.S. Pinafore for the younger campers.  I was one of the sailors in the chorus.
