Title: Rerelease of Let It Be
Post by: Moogmodule on April 15, 2024, 09:05:24 PM
It seems the very long awaited re-release of Let it Be will happen via Disney. I haven’t found an exact date but 8 May is being mentioned.

Interesting! I've never seen the original.l I have it on DVD but have been too lazy to drag out the DVD player and hook it up.  ;)

I'll keep my fingers crossed that Disney does offer it soon.

I have an old bootleg but the sound and vision quality is poor. It’ll be nice to see a cleaned up version.

^^^^

Mine's a bootleg, too, with poor quality. It would be nice to not only see a non-bootleg version but also one that, according to Disney, has been restored by Peter Jackson.

My bootleg's picture and sound quality is excellent...

I've got a feeling I won't be buying Disney's re-release.

isn't the rosier glasses view from Get Back, while possibly biased the other way, a better depiction of that time in their careers?  What is Disney doing with it, enhancing the quality of the video/audio at all?

Since the picture and audio quality of the original film was never excellent, that's quite remarkable.

Looking forward to the Peter Jackson cleanup.

Yes, I would think so, but I'm still looking forward to comparing and contrasting the two. (Hey, that would make a great school assignment.)

Peter Jackson is remastering the original footage. From The Verge: "Like the docuseries The Beatles: Get Back, Let It Be will feature original film footage remastered by Peter Jackson’s Park Road Post Production and remastered audio created using the same de-mixing tools that recently led to the release of the Beatles’ final song."

Given that I've seen only a bootleg, I'm looking forward to the remastered version.

Looks like it will indeed be released for streaming on May 8: https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/music/2024/04/16/beatles-let-it-be-documentary-peter-jackson-disney/73340860007/ (https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/music/2024/04/16/beatles-let-it-be-documentary-peter-jackson-disney/73340860007/)

That does look good! I really admire the work video editors do.

Had a look at the first half on Disney.  The picture and sound is a huge improvement over my crappy early 2000s bootleg. Jackson has avoided the washed out, heavily treated appearance that was evident in some of the Get Back footage. It just looks like a good quality film.

The film itself up to the formal studio performances and the rooftop seems more like a trailer to Get Back now but it moves along quickly and works better than I remember it.

It looks like a new music video of Let It Be premieres today.

Just finished watching Let It Be on Disney + and have to say it looks and sounds brilliant. I’ve had a bootleg DVD copy since 2005 so I’ve seen this film a few times but it’s not great quality so I don’t really watch it that much in its entirety except watch The Rooftop Concert. I really hope Let It Be gets a DVD & Blue Ray release it’s what Beatles fans would love . If you haven’t seen it at all I would recommend it. Both Let It Be & Get Back are set in the same period they are both totally different.

I've been too swamped to sit down and watch it properly (i.e., with full attention), but it sounds promising. I'm looking forward to kicking back and watching it very soon.

Just finished watching. Somehow I expected the visuals to be a bit sharper, like they did with Get Back, but I do see the improvement. And the sound is great. I've had a bootleg copy forever but it's been a while since I've watched it, and I've watched Get Back a number of times since then. I agree with someone who said LIB now looks like a trailer for GB. But both stand on their own, of course.

I've always felt that the Paul/George spat should not have been included in LIB. I think that more than anything fueled the idea that the film chronicled impending breakup. It might not have been seen so much as that if it were left out. But boy, was the revelation of George's quitting in GB a shock to me! I'd never known that before. Did any of you know?

Anyway, I'm glad they did this, and I'll probably grab the DVD if and when it comes out.

Yes, I knew.  I experienced all of this first hand, in chronological order as it happened.  Revolver was the first hint as to what was happening.  I was just sixteen at the time.  With Sgt. Pepper's we continued to see their different and distinct musical styles.  The White Album expounded on this.  Yes, we knew something was happening but we just weren't sure what it was.  We wanted to think of them as a band that would take us into the 1970s and beyond.  After all, they were young and reaching the peak of their creativity.  Thanks to Ed Sullivan and David Frost, we got to see them on TV with their Paperback Writer, Rain, Hello Goodbye, and Hey Jude videos.  They certainly looked cohesive enough.  We had Magical Mystery Tour and Yellow Submarine movies to reassure us that the band was still viable.  Without the internet and Beatles forums such as this, we had to rely on the news and fan magazines to know what was going on.

In the fall of 1969, we got Abbey Road and for a while we thought everything was okay.  A great LP with a magnificent closing medley! And we just knew they would be around in the following decade.

A pivotal moment for me came in late January 1970.  Come And Get It was playing on my car radio, an MGB which added to the British atmosphere.  I turned to my girlfriend Nancy (yes, I jokingly called her Magill and Lil at times) and said "Listen!  That's a new Beatles song!"  It sure sounded like them.  When the disc jockey said it was Badfinger, we both exclaimed "Who are they?!"

And then came the Let It Be movie and LP.  We knew it was over even with the short exchange between George and Paul..."I'll play it your way...or I won't play it at all."

I apologize for the extended prose, but I hope I answered your question "Did any of you know?"

I didn't know George had quit.
I knew Ringo had quit during the white album sessions.

I kind of knew exactly how George was feeling when he quit. I've played in quite a few bands over my life and one thing I've noticed is there is usually a dictator, if not early on but appears down the track a bit.
The last band I was in we had a lead guitarist who decided on things like the set list and how arrangements of songs should be etc etc. Never once thinking to ask "what do you think".. He even got a keyboard player to join without any discission with us.

It drives you a bit mad, and an anger wells up inside and makes you feel pretty horrible. These dictators are relentless and start treating you like a backing band.  If you want to avoid a bit bust up or confrontation you either A) get over it somehow (bite your lip) or B) just quit.

I think we all know Paul was that dictator. I remember a scene in get Back where he is telling Ringo (a quiet person in the studio) how he wants him to drum, you can see the look on Ringo's face, he hates being dictated too and his blood pressure is steadily rising. I know exactly how he felt.

I appreciate that Paul kept the band going and without him there would probably be no Abbey Rd. But I'm not surprised the band broke up after that.
