Title: My Love vs No More Lonely Nights
Post by: DaveRam on October 26, 2008, 12:26:55 PM
For someone who's got a lot of stick over the years for writing a lot of silly love songs , Paul's only had 2 big international hits with studio recorded love songs namely My Love and No More Lonely Nights .
And i know he's written many other's but these two singles are his big hit selling ode's to love , which of these two is the better ballad ? (inlove3)

"My Love," although I'd take "Maybe I'm Amazed" over either of these in a minute.  :)

I think No More Lonely Nights is the better song , i like the vocal and guitar solo and the sentiment although less yearning than My Love is , it's still pretty heart felt .
My Love is a bit to soppy for my taste , where as No More Lonely Nights as a bit of angst to it ?

Maybe; never thought of it that way. The bombastic (and very eighties) production leaves me cold. I wonder if there's a demo of this lurking on a bootleg somewhere?

"no more lonely nights" blew "my love" into water. but only because of that absolutely fantastic David Gilmour's guitar solo, but I actually prefer 70s music than 80s music.

we have to enjoy his music and not to fight which song is better  :)

I think thats why i like No More Lonely Nights better Geoff , because it's  a colder sounding song , Dave Gilmour's guitar is like an icebreaker cutting through the frozen sea .

Yeah, his solo in the fade is the best part of the production.  :)

i think they are two of his finest songs! My Love is my fav love song ever so i would
vote for that, and No More Lonely Nights has a fantastic guitar solo by Dave Gilmour!  :)

Lately it's been "No More Lonely Nights" because I'm tired of all of his silly love songs, it reminds me of how crappy my love life is!  But I agree with Geoff, I'd too take "Maybe I'm Amazed" over both of them too!

My Love. I like both though, but Henry's guitar solo in My Love does it for me.

Yuck, I can't stand 'No more lonely nights'. It's too over the top for me. I think 'My Love' is so much better because there is so much feeling behind the song. You can really feel how McCartney does when you listen to it.  It's just a far superior song than the icky 'No More Lonely Nights'.

Excellent choice of words!

I voted for My Love even though i prefer No More Lonely Nights. My Love is definately more soppy, but it is more lovey dovey like, more of a love ballad (which was the question). Given the choice though, i would listen to No More Lonely Nights,  it has a better beat to it,

It's "My Love" all the way for me.  "No More Lonely Nights" is a sweet song but it doesn't have the same appeal for me.

Someone please explain what's so wrong with a song being soppy as some of you call it?  I mean what is a love song supposed to be?

Also could someone please list some of these so called silly love songs that McCartney supposedly has written so many of, and please share what's so silly about them.

Beautifully done performance, and thanks so much for posting it.  I like it a lot better than the music video.

Maccafan, I'm with you...  I love soppy love songs!  And "My Love" makes me cry sometimes because it's so lovely and heartfelt.  I know Paul's caught a lot of flak for writing such mushy songs, but I love his wide-eyed romantic spirit.

I used the word soppy mccafan and their is nothing wrong with a love song being soppy i like quite a few of Paul's , especially the one's he wrote about Linda " Every Night " i love and "Maybe I'm Amazed" is a brilliant love song ,i think Paul capture's his feelings towards her with real  insight and affection on these songs .
I personally am not soppy person, i've always found the experience of love to be quite hard work after the initial honeymoon period ?
I think often people get carried away on love , thinking everything will be like the movies and for a few like my mum and dad 53 years together it's true .
I'm more cynical about love ,experience as thought me their are real pitfalls and heartache attatched to it .
So i'm quite drawn to love songs with a bit of edge to them .
I think Paul as always been very good at capturing the light and dark side of love , and yes some of his songs are silly love songs and there is nothing wrong with that .
But other's like "For No One " and "Loveliest thing" are darker , No More Lonely Nights also as i said is a colder love song .
I just personally prefer his less soppy ones as i relate more to "Beware My Love"
(wink1)

I vote for No More Lonely Nights because i used to see my mom and dad play that on the cd player when i was about 6 years old. I used to listen to Paul McCartney songs and Eric Clapton songs you see it was very funny because at first i didn't know that it was them singing . :)

My Love puts me to sleep, but I've always liked No More Lonely Nights. I'm not a big fan of the ultra - soppy stuff, and I think My Love rates pretty high on that scale.

Personally I don't consider For No One a love song.

I don't agree with the whole silly love song accusation against Paul McCartney!  In fact the actual song Silly Love Songs wasn't a love song at all and it certainly wasn't silly.  It has blasting horns, excellent vocals and harmonies, and one of the most killer basslines ever!  It's an upbeat high energy pop classic!

Paul McCartney has written some of the greatest love songs ever, some of my faves are...

Motor Of Love
Your Loving Flame
Only Love Remains
This Never Happened Before
Souvenir
Call Me Back Again
It's Not True
One Of These Days
Here Today
This Loving Game

Maybe I'm missing it, but what's silly about any of these?

I think you're missing it. And you've missed the point of the song 'Silly Love Songs' completely.

Silly love songs is quite clearly a retort to the press and even JL who berated Paul for writing soppy silly love songs, it's not meant to be a 'love song' per se but him saying and what's wrong with silly love songs, you'd think people would have had enough of silly love songs but he looks around and sees it isn't so - probably means there's plenty in the pop charts and that he still churns them out and the albums get sold. My opinion on it anyway.

I agree with all you said but there is also a  Love theme running through aswell, "The I love you" wouldnt have needed to be included if it was only just a dig at the critics for writing sopy love songs - i think it was a bit of both a soppy love song and two fingers up to the critics at the same time.

Silly Love Songs was totally a dig at the people who criticized McCartney for writing what they called Silly Love Songs!

The I Love You phrase was McCartney letting them know that no matter what they think, he's still going to express his love for his lady.

McCartney feels a love song is the best way for him to express this love, basically saying how else can I tell you about my love one.

He goes on to say that he just can't explain the feelings of love that are plain to him  and wonders why others can't see it when he expresses it in his songs about that love.

My opinion of course.
