Bass or Electric guitar
« on: June 27, 2005, 03:05:00 AM »

I want to get a guitar, but I'm not sure which one I want to get. I think too many people have electric guitars so I don't want to jump on that band wagon.  But too many Bass players go unnoticed(except Paul McCartney and a few others).  Which one would be a better choice?  I'm leaning toward a bass guitar but I'm still not sure.

I think if you're just planning to play on your own, a guitar is a better choice. If you prefer playing in a band, a bass-guitar can be good, specially if you want to make something special out of it. It is a fact that good bass-players are hard to find to join in a band, guitarists are like an epidemic: they're everywhere.
As an attraction to the other sex: I've been playing in a band for 24 years now, and never ever did the other sex like me because of me playing guitar... I guess it's me looks... But they did like me as a singer! I known that the other sex is very often attracted to the cool-looking bassplayer. That might be a reason for choosing the bass-guitar.

Bass if you want to play in a band. I mean you can get going with a band relatively quicker with a bass rather than a guitar. As has been well said, a guitar is better personal company generally speaking.

No matter what instrument you play...It's all about how you feel and vibe it. ;)

I started playing guitar 10 years ago and bass 2 years later, I still play both instruments regularly. I definately prefer guitar, but I couldn't miss my bass either.

The aforementioned comments about bass being better if you want to play in a band is true. I took up guitar because I'm a bit of an... ahem, control freak and I wold probably want to go solo or be the leader of the band. Which brings me to the other point that guitar is good if you want to play solo.
Whatever instument you pick, I'm sure you'll have fun with it, though.

I'd love to be the leader of a band, but unfortionately I'm the worst singer in music history, so that's not gonna happen...

Which instrument attracts you more? Dont play an instrument just because of picking up dates or what population plays something the most. Those reasons sounds kind of silly to me.

It's all a matter of taste. Pick up the instruments and give them a try. Which instrument do you get more of a kick out of it?

I personally prefer the bass. They may not come in as many cool designs as the guitar or get as much recognition, but the sound just touches me in no way a guitar is able to do.

The only set-back is that I find it rather difficult trying to write songs with a bass.

My main reason for starting on the guitar before bass was that I was affraid that people would think I was too stupid to handle 6 strings at once.

Playing bass can be just as hard as playing guitar, but a lot of people think that playing bass is much easier cause you don't have to know any chords.

I took up bass because someone had to. I was that good that at one gig I played the 1st three songs not plugged in (twas a festival and I was nervous as f***k) and noone, including the rest of the band, seemed to notice.

I've played both. Unless you're a genious, all you do with a bass is play a few strings, IMO. However, there are some fun basslines. It's all repetition. I like guitars because you can play chords, solos, riffs, and have fun. Sure, there are TOO MANY guitar players, and if you get a bass you may have an easier way to a band -- Everyone needs a bass.

Hey, to who said bass is easier due to chords, the chords are not THAT hard, in fact, I only play chords, and I always play chords anyway. For bass, you need scales. Though a guitar is worth it.
