Magicicada septendecim Brood II - The "17 Year Locusts" are here! In some areas of the eastern United States, there are millions per acre. These cicadas make some noise!

I am not looking forward to this. They havent made it here yet, but the last time was just a nightmare. You got so used to them flying and landing on you though that it became no big deal. The noise though,,,,oh the noise. They do make good fish bait.
-
Todd, they're all over the place here in New Jersey. That picture is a telephone pole by my house. They're up in the trees making a racket which sounds like a science fiction movie spaceship!
I'm going to make a video tomorrow. The cicadas quiet down at night, fortunately. During the day, you can hear them even when inside the house. The birds are havig a field day with this and are getting fat!
This one is on the siding next to my garage door. She didn't make it to a tree yet...

I havent even seen any shells on the trees. Maybe they wont move down until next year. Not sure. The electric tennis rackets might be the ticket for you Barry.
-
They're even louder today, Todd. This is the woods in my backyard earlier today...

Please tell them to knock it off before my cousin has her daughter's graduation party! ;)

Locusts singing is very appropriate for a graduation. Listen again to Bob Dylan's Day Of The Locusts.
Here are the lyrics...
Oh, the benches were stained with tears and perspiration
The birdies were flying from tree to tree
There was little to say, there was no conversation
As I stepped to the stage to pick up my degree
And the locusts sang off in the distance
Yeah, the locusts sang such a sweet melody
Oh, the locusts sang off in the distance
Yeah, the locusts sang and they were singing for me
I glanced into the chamber where the judges were talking
Darkness was everywhere, it smelled like a tomb
I was ready to leave, I was already walkin’
But the next time I looked there was light in the room
And the locusts sang, yeah, it give me a chill
Oh, the locusts sang such a sweet melody
Oh, the locusts sang their high whining trill
Yeah, the locusts sang and they were singing for me
Outside of the gates the trucks were unloadin’
The weather was hot, a-nearly 90 degrees
The man standin’ next to me, his head was exploding
Well, I was prayin’ the pieces wouldn’t fall on me
Yeah, the locusts sang off in the distance
Yeah, the locusts sang such a sweet melody
Oh, the locusts sang off in the distance
And the locusts sang and they were singing for me
I put down my robe, picked up my diploma
Took hold of my sweetheart and away we did drive
Straight for the hills, the Black Hills of Dakota
Sure was glad to get out of there alive
And the locusts sang, well, it give me a chill
Yeah, the locusts sang such a sweet melody
And the locusts sang with a high whinin’ trill
Yeah, the locusts sang and they was singing for me
Singing for me, well, singing for me
He wrote it when he received an honorary Doctorate of Music degree from Princeton University. There was another brood of cicadas singing away at the 1970 graduation ceremony.
Your cousin's daughter will always remember her graduation and the locusts' song. Maybe she'll become a Bob Dylan fan as well.
-
Todd, you might have to wait a little while until you hear their song. Brood V emerges in 2016...

I'm so glad we don't have them (to speak of) up here in NH. I can picture the front of my truck in vivid techno-yuk!

The broods are very predictable. So you'll get them in three years.
Thomas Jefferson wrote this about Brood II's visit to Monticello in 1775: “It appears … that they come periodically once in 17 years. They come out of the ground from a prodigious depth.”

Thank God they're not in Texas. We have enough bugs here. :-\

Ah, yes! I didn't have a chance to listen to it earlier so my comment was purely coincidental. Did Dylan ever soften his feelings about that honorary degree?

That the truth! I visited my cousins years ago and one flew in the passenger window and landed on my buddies shoulder. You should have heard the screaming! Lol!

It's hard to tell with Bob Dylan, Kelley. I'm sure he felt honored to receive an honorary PhD from Princeton otherwise he wouldn't have attended the ceremony. Maybe he headed straight for the hills, the Black Hills of Dakota, because he thought the locusts sang better than he could.

That must have been a sad sight. To see a guy hysterically screaming because a bug landed on his shoulder is pitiful. :(

Oh yuck, HG!!!!!! What kind of thread is this? It's like: "Invites to gambling dens full of easy money and fast women, chicken sandwiches and cornets of caviar"
Just kidding :P
Glad we don't get them here.... we do get Wetas though - but thankfully it is too cold for them now

It was huge!!! It had side mandables and looked about 4" long. He swatted it onto the floor of the car and stomped it hard. The thing got up and crawled under the seat.

There were thousands outside the car! Every time we passed a streetlight the whole circle of light and the poles were covered black with giant crickets!
It was really funny!

That sounds like a nightmare! But at least you could see them. Bedbugs really scare me. And ticks. I contracted Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever after visiting my brother in Virginia. I never even knew there had been a tick on me until I got really, really sick.
-
Ticks are everywhere this season! I've taken about 6 off me so far and a couple off the dog. Wow, What were the symptoms? Duh!...fever!
-
Two weeks now. They're still making a racket! ;D
