I disagree. I think pop music was at it's absolute peak in 1966-1967. I think it's never been as good since (and never will be again).

I agree. Though I'd widen the scope to include 65.

I think each decade has it's peak but definitely the 60's was a very interesting moment in pop music history; besides The Beatles there were Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Rolling Stones. and the Motown sound   But the 70's was a good decade too, we had singers/songwriters like Cat Stevens, Elton John, bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath.   Even the 80s was a cool decade despite the decadence.

So many talented artist back then, but currently we only find a bunch of wannabes who only care about their image and are not able to sing live, they rely too much in elaborated choreographies.  That's why we have fiascos like Britney Spears and Milli  Vanilli.

I think that the musicians that were young in the mid to late 60s were very priviledged. I sure envy them. If you'd compare them to painters, you could say that they had more colors to work with than the people that came before them, and an emptier canvas than the people that came after them. Bands like The Beatles, The Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones were showing everyone what the posibilities were at a time when a lot of things weren't done to death yet. Because of that, I think that music wise the 60s were more creative, exciting, surprising, original and progressive than any other decade.

Very true. Rock was still in it's infancy in the mid 60's. If you were a half decent musician with an imagination you could go places. There are many influential artists from the 70's and Dave has mentioned a lot of them, but the sheer volume of music from the 60's that remains influential to this day is enormous.

I have to get on my hobby-horse about this. Today there are plenty of hardworking, talented acts out there producing fine music. Milli Vanilli are a case extremis, but the 60's had more than it's share of smoke and mirrors. The Stones pretending to be working class louts (complete with faked accents), The Monkees pretending to play their instruments, The Beatles overdubbing "live" concert footage, or George waving to encourage screaming to cover up the dodgy bits on PaperBack Writer?
And whatever you think of Britney as a person she produced a brace of fine pop singles. How (as an artist) is she due more contempt than Cilla Black, Dusty Springfield, Melanie or Mary Hopkins?
And hasn't the internet meant we have an access to variety of music our 60's ancestors could only dream of, with bands rising to fame (Artic Monkeys, Lilly Allen) without the benefit of corporate backing or managers putting them in suits and controlling their every word and action?

A fanatstic decade in my opinion after the wonderful 60's!
I find a lot of the best songs written in the 60's & 70's.
There has always been great songs up to now but there just seemed
to be a running non-stop of classic tunes throughout those periods.
Lots of terrific albums were released in the 70's, so for me:

Ram - Macca & Linda (kicked off the decade nicely i find! ;))
What's Going On - Marvin Gaye
Blue - Joni Mitchell
Who's Next - the Who
Out of the Blue - ELO
Electric Warrior - T.Rex
London Calling - The Clash
Imagie - John Lennon
Venus & Mars - Wings
Exodus - Bob Marley
Talking Heads - 77
Kick Inside - Kate Bush
Talking Book - Stevie Wonder
Songs in the Key of Life - Stevie Wonder
The Band - The Band
Sparks - Kimoko My House
Blood on the Tracks - Dylan
Ziggy Stardust - Bowie

 :)

In the 60's between 1963 and 1967 only The Sound Of Music Soundtrack ,The Beatles , The Stones and Bob Dylan ocupied the # 1 postion on the UK album charts , only the Monkees in 1967 broke this pattern and then it took Val Doonican Rocks But Gently in 1968 to add to this list , these five acts and soundtrack album had a real stranglehold on the UK album charts .
And although The Beatles albums and Dylan's albums were brilliant , there was little room for other great 60's albums in this scrum .
It still staggers me that The Beach Boys Masterpiece Pet Sounds only managed # 2 in the UK during this time , the sales of the above records were just to great for it to hit the top spot ?
The Field for albums was much more open  in the 70's ,so i think you get a much more varried and interesting albums era ?

Agreed Dave, there did seem to be a bit of a monopoly on the #1 spot. But in those days records literally sold in truckloads. Something that made #2 or even #10 on the album chart would probably make #1 today. Albums also seemed to have more staying power in those days. It wasn't unheard of for something to stay on the chart for nearly a year, though never actually making the coveted #1 spot.

Agree BlueMeanie most of the top 10 albums from the 60's would have hit # 1 today.
The Sound Of Music Soundtrack amazes me it spent 70 weeks at # 1  ,during The Beatles era. Some nice songs granted but 70 weeks at # 1 is a bit extreme ,what were you 60's record buyer's ON  :D :D :D :P

You're right DaveRam, in the middle of the 60's when the Beatles were not at #1, The Sound of Music was occuping the top spot! That album was crazy, I really hated because knocked-off the top spot the Beatles during months! It was the South Pacific of the 60's  :P

Yeah!  What did we have in the United States in the 70s other than The Rolling Stones?  Glam Rock, Disco, Heavy Metal and other such stuff.  Sure, we had Wings, John, George and Ringo.  Thank heaven for that!  And for The Who.

I can't argue with Exhibit One being hard to take but what about Joni Mitchell, Carole King, The Carpenters, Chicago, John Denver, right off the top of my head? The early part of the decade still was pretty good, I'd say.

I see what you did there! But I still contend that 70's music wasn't all bad and I further contend that it didn't all make you hurl. I know for a fact that you are seriously in love with Linda Ronstadt. I know that she had a hit with the Stone Ponies in 1967 but she was a major 1970's star. True, she did it with a lot of 50's and 60's covers but it was still in the 70's. Perhaps that's not compelling enough evidence but this has to be.....

Interesting discussion. I think the 70's brought a whole lot of creativity and originality out in the music, and not just the early portion. Depending on how one feels about these genres, it was also the decade of the beginnings of punk, new wave, and techno. Accordingly, I consider groups like Ramones, DEVO, and Kraftwerk to have been tremendously influential, right up to this day. As much so, maybe, as The Fabs.

From my point of view, pop culture peaked at its best in the 70's, sort of fulfilling and completing what was begun in the 60's.

Of course, there has always been and always will be good music to be found at any time. We may have to dig a little deeper these days to find it, though.

 ;)

they were influencial klang but nowhere near the Beatles imo

yesterday (Sunday) I went into JB HIFI in Brisbane, a big music store, I saw box sets of Beatles vinyl, box sets of Beatles CD's all over the place, and selling for top dollar (not in the bargain bin), I didnt notice any Devo or Ramones, Sgt Pepper on vinyl was $38

being as its its 43 years since they split up, thats truly amazing

I watched a Rock quiz thats on tv every week here, there were several questions about Beatle music, everyone seems influenced by them.

I guess my primary thought was that the 70's had a lot of diversity and good stuff throughout. I kind of look at it as 60's v.2

They served a purpose, though, along with others like The Ohio Express.  Psychedelia was a bit much for young kids in the late 60s.

Yep! That's one of the first videos I watched on YouTube. Ted was better then. I liked other stuff too, like when my brother and his band played this at The Red Lion:

I loved Dick Clark. Bandstand was great of course and I always looked forward to those shows he used to have periodically with 50's and 60's clips. They're all on YouTube now! Now the blooper stuff he did...eh. LOL

In rock/pop music, there's nothing like the 60's, before or after that decade. Even my favorite albums of the 70's were done by 60's artists: Plastic Ono Band, Imagine, Mind Games, Walls And Bridges and Rock 'N' Roll by John Lennon; Band On The Run by Paul McCartney; All Things Must Pass by George Harrison; Who's Next, Quadrophenia, The Who By Numbers and Who Are You by the Who; Sticky Fingers and Exile On Main Street by the Rolling Stones; Lola by the Kinks; Morrison Hotel and L.A. Woman by the Doors; Workingman's Dead and American Beauty by Grateful Dead; Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus by Spirit; etc.

Those 2 Stones albums are their best IMO, due to a large part for having Mick Taylor in the band and theyve never been as good since he left. (which is a long long time ago) ;)

I prefer Let It Bleed, I think that was their peak. Mick Taylor was already playing with the band, though he had less participation here. But Sticky Fingers is another excellent album, and my second favorite record by the Stones. And Exile On Main Street is very good considering that it's a double-album, where fillers are usually present, and their last truly great album in my opinion.

I tend to refrain from one-sentenced opinions when it comes to things as vast as a whole decade. I don't think it's fair to say that "the 70's were worse than the 60's" or "the 80's suck" or anything like this, because we're not talking about a song, or an album, but a whole freakin' decade. Yes, some of the 70's and 80's mainstream may have sucked more than before (Eagles selling that many albums is a crime). But let's not forget that there's much more to it than the radio hits. Tons of different musical scenes, filled with tons of different artists, playing tons of different styles. It has always been that way and it still is now. I don't see how it can be possible for one to hate a decade as a whole (hell, even a year as a whole), unless the said person hates rock/jazz/pop/blues/etc. music altogether. It's just way too vast of a subject, and deserves days and filled forum pages of analysis.

This is not a replay to anybody in particular, just some thoughts.

There's a one-sentence opinion right there, Ovi.  They sold a lot of albums because people liked their music.  People liked America too.  Here in the United States, we were in desperate need of some laid-back music after the tumultuous decade we just experienced.  Also, you're looking at the 70s retrospectively.  At the time there was no comparison able to be made to music of the decades to follow, only the years prior.  We had what we had and for many of us the pickings were slim.

I think discussions like this prove what others have said before: music is very subjective. It's also strongly tied to emotions and individual experiences. There's a lot of songs I like in large part because of the memories attached to them. I would admit that they might not be the greatest songs ever but the feelings they evoke are priceless. Of course there are songs that I would rather have my eyelashes yanked out than listen to, good memories or not! It's great to have a place like this where people share what they like. I don't always agree but I have found a lot of new things to love that I probably would not have found on my own.

The Eagles thing was more of a joke. I don't really hate them, could've just as well said Donna Summer or Foreigner. The point I was trying to make is that the mainstream, in many cases, is not representative for the music of the time.

Barry, I don't really have an argument for you feeling underwhelmed by the music of the 70's after having experienced the 60's. It just strikes me as weird, with so many musical scenes and so many artists: Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, prog rock (Genesis, King Crimson, Yes, Jethro Tull), jazzy rock (Steely Dan, Chicago), confessional singer-songwriters (Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor), glam rock (Bowie, T.Rex, Lou Reed), motown/soul (Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder releasing critically-aclaimed albums), heavy metal (Black Sabbath, Deep Purple), then later Punk and New Wave (Clash, Television, Ramones, Talking Heads, Blondie)etc. And these are only few examples of the most well-known scenes (I'll bet there was much more than this going on in the late 70's American CBGB scene, for example).

Really, I don't know how can anybody feel underwhelmed while having so much good music to listen to, other than perhaps nostalgia for the whole "hippie scene" or something like this. But as you said, I haven't experienced it, so maybe I'm missing something.

I couldn't have said it better.  Many musical barriers were broken in the 60s.  In the 70s many artists ran through the barriers and looked (and often found) further barriers to break.  Yes a lot of those were 60s artists but that doesn't diminish the great music that was created in the 70s.

I lived through both decades and love the music from both.

me too ibanez, I love the 60's (especially The Beatles) but most of my very favourite music (other than Beatles) is from the 70's, whether it was Yes, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Gentle Giant, PFM, Eloy, Moody Blues, Barclay James Harvest, ELP, The Pretty Things, Jethro Tull, Mike Oldfield, Genesis..... the genie was out of the bottle and there were no barriers as to what could be done.

I enjoyed seeing how some 60s bands evolved and grew.  The Who come to mind.  Who's Next and Quadrophenia are light-years beyond the band that had very rudimentary musicianship when they started out.  Tommy was the start of the maturation however.

Let's see, y'all mentioned Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Genesis, King Crimson, Yes, Jethro Tull, Chicago, Bruce Springsteen, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, David Bowie, T.Rex, Lou Reed, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Moody Blues, The Who, Barclay James Harvest, Mike Oldfield, and The Pretty Things.  They all started in the 60s and developed further over the next decade and in some case more.  Carole King began her career in the 50s.

George, I agree with you about barriers being broken in the 60s but I'm not sure what further barriers were broken by those 60s artists who continued their careers into the 70s.  I think they just advanced their genre of music during that decade.

I'm not completely down on 70s music.  I like a lot of the artists mentioned above.  I just had trouble liking Heavy Metal, Disco, Punk Rock and New Wave, with a few exceptions for New Wave.

What else did we get in 70s?

Well yeah,  70s  music didn't spring fully born from the head of Zeus. Without the great music of the 60s, none of the great stuff from the 70s would have happened.

What else did we get in the 70s?  Barry, we got Wishbone Ash, Elton John, Cheap Trick, Heart, Kansas, Robin Trower, The Allman Brothers Band, Thin Lizzy, Electric Light Orchestra, Todd Rundgren, etc.  No Disco, Punk, Metal or New Wave there.  Just good rock and pop music.

Even though they are not a favorite, I think Yes was looking to go beyond rock with a lot of their stuff.  I really do think they broke some new barriers.  Pink Floyd is another band who come to mind. Wish You Were Here is like nothing that came before.

Don't get me wrong.  I have and love a LOT of 60s music.  But the 70s was much more than The Sex Pistols and the spinning silver ball above the dance floor.

As I mentioned to Nowhere Man, The Allman Brothers started up in the 60s.  I like them a lot, especially Dickey Betts!  Great Southern Rock!  Elton John started in the 60s too.  I like his early stuff like Honky Château.  All I remember about Todd Rundgren is Hello It's Me.  ELO was pretty good.  I never heard of Cheap Trick, Wishbone Ash, Robin Trower and Thin Lizzy.

No not really Barry, they played some what you might call proto prog and symphonic rock but true progressive rock didnt evolve until the 70's in England, and then there was a worldwide explosion of it, every European country produced great prog bands, in fact every civilised country in the world seemed too.....finally destroyed by Punk Rock, Im still discovering South American/Japanese/East European/Australian prog bands of the 70's

Some might argue that it was King Crimson in '68 that launched that era/genre, Kev. But what matter? A lot was going on and whoever popped out first is relatively irrelevant, I think.

I believe that Yes made a bigger splash on the whole, though. Great group.

Even though I didn't like disco at the time, it sent me looking at a much wider spectrum of music. Blues, jazz and most of the bands mentioned in earlier posts. In the mid - late 70's I listened and saw a lot of great bands from Tull. Zappa, Yes, Return to Forever, Weather Report, Roy Buchanan and a multitude of old Bluesmen from Muddy to Johnny Winter and it just goes on.
It's funny, even though I didn't like disco much when I hear it now it's actually pretty good.

Same here. I made my peace with disco, though, and appreciate the fine musicianship and showmanship invested in it.

Likewise with bubblegum in the 60's, taken in without bias there is good stuff to be found.

Yes  Klang...King Crimsons debut album 'In the Court of the Crimson King' was released in October 1969 and for some it was the first true prog rock album, but this is all subjective and Ive always believed that The Yes Album was progs 1st baby, its a point that prog fans argue about but I think it was a mixture of Chris squires distinctive Rickenbacker stereo bass, Tony Banks keyboard, Steve Howes jazz/classical infused guitar, Bill Bruffords poly rhythms, and Jon Andersons mystical lyrics (no-one understood them)  ;D that wove the prog tapestry, before this was merely Psych and Symphonic...

listen to this, it was a completely new sound, what a Bass line, what drumming, what a sound.... its just magical , put your headphones on and fly away  :)

I love this album and Close to the Edge too. I listened to all the kid stuff through most of the 70's because that's what I was, but by the time I was a junior in high school I found myself listening to the stuff that my brother played when I was just little. He never sat in his room alone listening to his music, he made sure I heard it! He would always bring home an album or two when he was home on leave from the Navy and I turned to those too. I was lucky to have my very own mentor.  :)
