What do we think of the 60's Stones?
« on: March 17, 2005, 05:50:32 PM »

Don't know if this has been done already, but we've just been talking about Let It Bleed.
For me, I don't care for the early blues stuff. Not my cup of tea. Their "Beatles" period is OK, some fine singles, though their production is a bit murky for me in places (Have you seen your mother especially). All respect to Brian Jones, but they seemed to really find their feet when Mick Taylor joined. Gimme Shelter must have one of the best intro's ever, and i think Sympathy For The Devil is near perfect.
Anyone give a damn?

Sympathy For The Devil is my favourite 'Stones' track. I never really got into them as much or even a fraction of The Beatles, so I can't comment with any significant insight. I respect how much they have influenced other artists.

They did everything the Beatles did, only three months later. It's like they go into the studio and say, "What are the Beatles doing? Hell let's do that!" ;)

Naahh! They're great (thumbsup)

respect to the stones.

I think "Exile On Main Street" is their most flavorful album - their "White Album"..

I think Brian Jones was great--tremendously underrated and responsible for alot of their esoteric sounds, from recorders on "Ruby Tuesday" to sitar on "Paint it Black."  He also played the descending riff on "The Last Time"--killer!

I love the early 70s Stones, but the mid-60s were pretty damn incredible at times.  Maybe more songs than albums, but "Aftermath" and "Between the Buttons" aren't fluff.

There would be "NO" Rolling Stones as we have come to know them without "Brian". It was his band to start with! He was the guy who was high on their Blues sound/rock. They also got a big shot in the arm when "Woody" joined them!

I actually prefer them with Brian Jones, I love their Rhythm and Blues period. My favourite album is "Out of Our Heads" (the UK version). In my opinion, they lost something much more than a rhythm guitarist when they sacked Brian.

What are you talking about man, they ruled in the 60's.  beggars Banquet is one of the best albums ever.  They could play some great Rock and Roll, and i think 60's was their most fruitful

My favorite era of the Stones is during the late 60's/early 70's when they were bluesy, ballsy & bad ass in their music, in their image & in their attitude which defines them for me.  I think the Rolling Stones of the early 60's look like choirboys but it's funny how much controversy they caused in those days while my favorite song during that era is The Last Time.

Exile On main St is one of thier best albums too, that was in the 70s tho

I think if you looka t that album song for song it doesnt hold up against say Let it Bleed or Beggars Banquet.
