B Side to a single

I was wondering, how does a "B" side to a singel chart differently than the "A" side? I went to
www.songfacts.com
and looked up some singles and noticed that the "A" side had a better placement than it's corresponding "B" side. How does that happen if you buy the two on the same piece of vinyl?

I believe the amount of airplay has something to do with it as well.
