King Crimson
« on: July 25, 2012, 12:00:22 AM »

One of my favourite all time bands..
Probably THE most talent rock band (musicianship wise), Robert Fripp on guitar, drummer Bill Brufford who left Yes to join this band
They mixed Rock with Jazz, Classical and folk elements and sort of fused it all together.

Listen to Fallen Angel & Starless and hear the intensity :)

I listened to them a lot. Indeed, the first album is the thing!

I believe somewhere there is a topic on King Crimson :)

Great band!!!!

And an excellent choice of songs!

Another Yes connection to KC is that Jon Anderson (lead singer of Yes) provided the lead vocals on Lizard

most fans of prog rock name 'In The Court' as the 1st ever real full blown prog album, it certainly has all the prog elements, and some awesome musicianship.

I'm not a fan of Prog Rock, but In The Court Of Crimson King is an album I really like.

'In The Court' is simply stunning. It's been a while since an album impressed me so much. My personal favourites are the bombastic '21st Century Schizoid Man', the melancholic 'I Talk To The Wind' (how I love that guitar tone and Greg's dreamy vocals) and the imposing 'Epitaph'. The remaining tracks are great as well, except maybe for the instrumental part of 'Moonchild' which can get a bit tedious at times.

Together with 'Selling England By The Pound', they are definitely my favourite prog rock albums. Or it could the fact that they are the only two prog albums I actually own. But hey, they're both great anyways!

Yes, the long intrumental part of "Moonchild" (which at parts hardly can be called as music) almost ruins the album, but there're so many great moments so that's just a minor detail.

I actually think 'Starless' is their best track from the Red album and I agree about Moonchild it gets tedious

Thoughts on 'In The Wake of Poseidon' ? Just gave it a few listens and I think it's definitely not as bad as made out to be. Much of the songs try too hard to sound like the ones on 'In The Court' (at times way too obvious, as well), but I still like most of them. The "peace" snippets are silly, but on the other hand, 'Cat Food' is just awesome - I've never ever heard anything quite like it before.

Thoughts on 'Lizard'? I was hugely disappointed by it, I think they were trying too hard. Classic example of pretentious progressive rock abandoning  good musical ideas in favour of grandiosity and complexity. There's too many musical ideas/melodies/sections all stacked into each song, and few of them are really memorable. 'Cirkus', 'Indoor Games' and the title track have their fair share of good moments, 'Lady In The Dancing Water' is all right, if a bit forgettable (nowhere near as good as the majestic I Talk To The Wind), but in the end, 'Prince Rupert Awakes' is the only song that I care about and enjoy from start to finish (great vocals by guest Jon Anderson and memorable melody). 'Happy Family' is unlistenable. I also don't really like Haskell's voice in general.

Epitaph, Starless, Fallen Angel, Court of the c K and I talk to the Wind are my favourites.

Oh, there was also this short song called..... I dont remember. I have a memory of this song and I believe it is King Crimson... Something about a woman who lives alone and there is a mention of a tree? I think this song is in two parts, and the names are in two seasons?

I also wrote a poem to someone based on this song....!

Any ideas what I'm on about?

I listened to The Court of the Crimson King this AM. It was good. I hadn't heard them in years.

I read today that Fripp has announced KC will be working in 2014. Tony Levin on board. More later.

I was trying to buy KC songs off iTunes the other week and could not find any! then I read that Robert Fripp did not like the idea of selling KC songs online...
