Aha... Good!! ;)

This means that the man is Gretty and not Hessy. Gretty was the one who taught several intricate guitar chords to teenagers PM and GH..., wasn't he??

Thank you so much pc31!! ;)

Here is a piece on Frank Hessy from my Encyclopedia. I have pics and stories about Jim Gretty on one of my sites www.mersey-beat.com

HESSY, FRANK. Frank Hesselberg opened his musical instrument store, Frank Hessy, in Whitechapel, Liverpool, in 1934 and it became the city

the first one is hazy because it is a newspaper clipping not much chance of finding it clearer unless astrid reprinted it but usually the papers buy what they print along with the negatives...

The picture isn't in Astrid's book. But there must be a pic with a better resolution around.

They usually buy just the right to reproduce. The copyright remains in the ownership of the originator, along with the negatives. Typically a publication will purchase a right of usage based on how many copies are printed. This is typical of newspapers and magazines. If they want to own the complete rights to an image, they can negotiate a price with the photographer. Unless of course, you're a staff photographer, in which case you own jack sh*t.

The first one was already posted in here. It looks like Ringo in the background, but in fact it is a photo. I will post the Ringo picture later. I presume it is George's guitar he's holding.

Aha... Then the 1st one is this..., ins't it?? It's from the same Astrid Kirchherr session's at George and Ringo's flat in Londen, March 1964, you have already posted. The image in the background is a George's photo from the AHDN sessions (=i.e., the ones on the cover of AHDN LP...)...

BTW: is this the Ringo's one??

Best!! ;)

Yes, that's the George one.

The picture is of Ringo dancing in the room with Astrid and holding a guitar.

Yes I think so. Maybe Bill Harry can help us and tell if it's Hessy's or Rushworth's.

I'm also trying to get info about Bob Hobbs, i.e., the jazz guitar player who worked at Rushworth's...

Best!! ;)

As you can see froim Astrid's photo, Frank Hessy's store looks different from the film clip from 'Ferry Cross the Mersey.' There is a scene, supposedly in Hessy's, where you can see Jim Gretty holding the kids back. It doesn't look like the store I remember. Also, Hessy's at the time was in Stanley Street, a narrow street opposite the post office depot, not the large street with all that traffic seen through the window. Most of Ferry Cross The Mersey was filmed in a studio in London, with various location shots in Liverpool.
Bob Hobbs did work at Rushworths and wrote a regular guitar column for Mersey Beat with Hu Birch. They both ran a guitar school and were members of a guitar club.

So, it is Jim Gretty but not in Hessy's Music Store.
