Title: Gary Lewis and the Playboys
Post by: JimmyMcCullochFan on June 25, 2009, 03:38:57 AM
Anybody like them? I remember seeing them in the early 90's (I was around 5) at the Iowa State Fair and I also remember when I got a little older, I got into a Gary Lewis and the Playboys phase.

I like them too. I always thought Gary was a good drummer. "Without A Word Of Warning" is probably my favorite, but I have to admit to only owning a compilation of theirs and no proper albums.

I've always liked Gary Lewis And The Playboys.  They had a string of hits during the "British Invasion" here in the United States and did well on the charts.  They also appeared in several "teen movies" and performed well on tours.  Gary's voice sounds a lot like his dad's and so when I heard his songs, I always had this mental picture of Jerry Lewis singing.  I still do till this very day!

Save Your Heart For Me is my favorite Gary Lewis song.

And here they are! Gary Lewis was on SXM talking about hosting Hullabaloo with his dad. Even though Jerry gives Gary a look both times Gary takes the high "Won't you please, please help me?" by himself, he had actually told his son to do it because he'd never be able to hit that high note.  ;D

It's worth watching that whole Hullabaloo show...

You'll get to see Joannie Sommers, Barry Maguire, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, and Paul Revere and the Raiders.

Barry Maguire singing Hang On Sloopy?  Yech!

Here are The McCoys singing it in 1965...

Better still, The McCoys redoing it in 1975...

She had all those Hollywood A Go Go and Hullabaloo dancers beat by light years!

Hang On Sloopy was the perfect song to sing Reggae style.  I often heard it played by Reggae groups when I vacationed in The Caribbean.  Desmond Dekker took what Rick Derringer did in 1975 and made it sound like this...
