Imagine... if there’d been a happy ending
Had there been any poetic justice to John Lennon’s life, his move to New York to escape the worst excesses of London’s tabloid press and police officers (so what else is new?) would have had a happy ending.“He was an artist. Why would you kill an artist?” Yoko Ono choked on her continuing grief at the end of Imagine – Lennon: The New York Years (BBC 1).There was no happy ending. In fact, Michael Epstein’s excellent film, introduced by Alan Yentob, showed how John Lennon’s pursuit of happiness, as part of the perceived American dream he’d trusted, had given him but a few short years of peace before he was shot dead on his doorstep.Of course we knew all that already. Lennon’s story has been told many times before – but perhaps not quite so honestly and lyrically as was done here.
