Well, we're a small nation you know. Two gold medals now, four silver and four bronze. Hopefully there's a couple more coming up.

Per capita, that seems very impressive!

But perhaps not as impressive as Armenia!!

Armenia Leads Beijing 2008 Olympic Medals Per Capita
Posted August 12th, 2008 by admin_huliq
Today's Los Angeles Times presents the list of Olympic Medals Per Capita where a small nation of Armenia leads by having one Olympic Medal per 1,484,293 people. Check the MPC national listing of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games below.

In 2004 Olympic Games Armenia won zero medals and on the Medals Per Capita listing came the 127th on the listing even with India.

LA Times writes:

"Well, let's applaud Armenia, which just grabbed two bronzes and ascended from below the charts all the way to No. 1 in the Tuesday MPC standings. Which, as usual, beat the mulch out of the paltry and inexcusably lazy Medals Table used in the Olympics.

"The Medals Table had the United States first at 22 and then China at 20, as if culling 22 medals from 303,824,646 citizens or 20 from 1,330,044,605 constituted some sort of big whoop-dee-doo.

"After Tigran Gevorg Martirosyan's bronze in the men's 62-69kg weightlifting, and Roman Amoyan's bronze in the men's under-55kg Greco-Roman wrestling, Armenia had two medals among merely 2,968,586 citizens, or one for every 1,484,293 Armenians."

Here is the Listing of Medals Per Capita

1. Armenia (2) - 1,484,293
2. Australia (10) - 2,060,086
3. Slovakia (2) - 2,622,375
4. Azerbaijan (3) - 2,725,905
5. Finland (2) - 2,727,704
6. North Korea (7) - 3,354,156
7. South Korea (12) - 4,102,737
8. Austria (2) - 4,102,767
9. The Netherlands (4) - 4,161,328
10. Croatia (1) - 4,491,543

(Some select bottom-dwellers):

30. United States (22) - 14,467,840
40. China (20) - 66,502,230
46. India (1) - 1,147,995,898

It was pretty close tho! 0.01 second!

The Netherlands scored their second gold medal yesterday with rowing.

Each time i see the re-play Bobber , i can't see how Phelps got it , it's a real blink of the eye victory .
Little Old Britain as 12 Gold Medals now . Suppose we have John Major's 90's Government to thank for some of this success and the launch of the Lottery , it's not everyday i pat a Tory on the back .

Well the 1 100th of a second was to tie Mark Spitz record he surpassed it when America one the 4x100 medly relay.

But that was insane, that race. I thought he was gonna get silver and I almost had a heart attack when they said he got gold and showed how close it was.

But 8 gold medals in one Olympics, no one will ever beat that. He is crazy good. He's basically the best athlete of all time now.

I'm not sure about this, but I think the image refresh rate on the cameras that were used to show the event (best views underwater) may be more than 0.01 seconds ... meaning that the film will never show who won, it's all got to do with the touch pad sensors.

Those super slo-mo cameras we sometimes see may have faster "frame rates" than 0.01 seconds, but those underwater shots from below the swimmers (the only ones that I think could have answered the question definitively) didn't look like the super slo-mo ones.

Anyone with more knowledge on this, please chime in/correct, etc.!

No one will ever be able to tell who won by the naked eye. It is nearly impossible. The way the water distorts the camera minorly, and how close it actually was. But the touch pads don't lie.

Basically, if you watch the tapes, Phelps took another stroke and you can see his arms coming around. The other guy stopped and had both of his hands in front and was drifting to the wall, which caused him to lose his momentum. Allowing Phelps to swing his arms around and touch the walls, but just slightly before. Too close for comfort if you ask me. My nerves were the worst!

Congratulations to Scotland's "Chis Hoy" he becomes the first athlete in 100 years to win 3 Gold Medals at the same Olympic Games for Great Britain in Cycling .
Henry Taylor in swimming was the last person to do this in 1908 for Great Britain .
Chris Hoy shares his Birthday 23 rd March with Britain's other great Olmpic Legend Sir Steve Redgrave( Rowing 5 Olympic Gold Medals over five different games ) and Sir Roger Banister the first man to break the 4 minute mile , looks like the 23rd of March is a good day to be born on if your a British athlete .

15 Gold Medals now for Team GB and 3rd on the medal table  (thumbsup)(smile)(bouncing2)(bouncing1)(bouncing3)(clap)(clap)(clap)(dance)

They made a joke on TV (Mock the week) that GB only win medals in events where black africans can't afford the equipment.

New Zie is doing not bad... but NZ has such an inferiority complex... if they lose they say something like "we lost, but the person who won had his helmet done by a nz person [nevermind that the person works in an american firm ]" (roll)

Of our 13 medals so far, 10 were won by women.

I find it a little bit sickening when the media are all over Christine Ohuruogu for her one gold medal, and Chris Hoy, with three golds seems to be relegated to the background. Who's achievement was greater? And which one didn't miss three random drugs tests?!!

Very true Paul , part of me still thinks their was something very fishy about missing those three drug tests .
Chris Hoy's achievement is far more remarkable and news worthy .

The opening ceremony was amazing. I was in complete awe.

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but it turned out that parts of the ceremony were fake. Has anyone heard or read about this? Apparently, parts of the fireworks (the 'footsteps', I believe) that were shown on TV were computer animated and/or pre-taped... And the little girl that sang during the ceremony was lip synching to what another girl (who wasn't pretty enough) was singing behind the scenes...

Our women are doing much better than our men... 12 2/3 of the 15 medals we've got now were won by women...

The Netherlands are doing fine at the moment. Gold medals on waterpolo ladies, hockey ladies, 10 km swimming (Maarten van der Weijden won, after suffering from acute leukemia (sp?) in 2001).
