Best Albums of Alltime
« on: January 17, 2005, 09:02:22 PM »

The age old question.  After much inward debate I think I have my top 10

1.Dark Side of the Moon -no other album has the same vibe or cohesiveness of this, even a Beatles.  It changes for me every time.  Increidble.

2.The White Album- contains some of the best Beatles songs that span so many genres.  But we all knew that ;)

3.Who's Next- the amazing consistency of this album, with some of the best rockers of alltime.

4. The Wall-a journey, with great music.

5.Abbey Road- a fitting sendoff to the best band of alltime.

6.Led Zeppelin I-big, bluesy, they would never be able to top it imo.

7.Revolver-changed music, and its easy to seee why.

8.Beggars Banquet- The best opening/closing tracks on an album ever (Sympathy for the Devil and Salt of the Earth).  The Stones at their best.

9.Physical Graffiti-full of epics, and how can you go wrong with double Zeppelin.

10.Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band-I dunno how it managed to get so low on the list.

honorable mention: Let it Bleed, Led Zeppelin IV, Disraeli Gears, Are You Experienced, Rubber Soul, Tommy, Quadrophenia, Music from the Big Pink, Wish You Were Here.  And many others.

honnestly, the beatles are my favorite band, and those are the albums i like the most (including their solo careers)...but for the list i tried to put differents albums of artists i like a lot (cause it would have been beatles from 1 to 10), and yeah van halen I is an album i like a lot...late 70's hard rock... really like EVH's guitar techniques..I like a lot of van halen songs, not as much as the beatles of course but i really enjoy listening to them.

I'll add a couple-

Kansas - Left Overture,,,,people should really give this one a listen. Every song is a powerful venture into rock and prog. Excellent lyrics also.

Yes - Fragile,,,,you would be hard pressed to find another album that showcases the skills of some of the best musicians in rock. Not a bad song on this one.

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours,,,,,do I really need to explain this one?

Supertramp - Crime Of The Century,,,,bands can only pray to write music this good and to also sound this well.

The Who - Quadrophenia,,,,its better than Tommy.

Keeping it to pop/rock studio albums (no compilations or live ones), separating between Beatles and everyone else (max. 1 each), and somewhat off the top of my head:

OTHERS:

1) Moody Blues: DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED
2) Gerry Rafferty: CITY TO CITY
3) The Who: WHO'S NEXT
4) Dusty Springfield: DUSTY IN MEMPHIS
5) U2: WAR
6) Chicago: THE CHICAGO TRANSIT AUTHORITY (barely ahead of CHICAGO II)
7) Billy Joel: THE BRIDGE
8) Bob Dylan: HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED (just beat out BLOOD ON THE TRACKS)
9)  Fleetwood Mac: MIRAGE
10)The Beach Boys: PET SOUNDS

Most overrated: Bruce Springsteen: BORN TO RUN (The title track is good, but most of the rest is only okay, with some incredibly dated, juvenile lyrics).

GROUP AND SOLO:

1) RUBBER SOUL (EITHER UK OR US)
2) ABBEY ROAD
3) ALL THINGS MUST PASS
4) SGT. PEPPER
5) REVOLVER (UK - DUH!)
6) WHITE ALBUM
7) HELP! (UK VERSION)
8) BAND ON THE RUN
9) A HARD DAYS' NIGHT
10) LET IT BE

Most overrated: JOHN LENNON / PLASTIC ONO BAND.  (John was always proud of the "poetry" on this album, when he should have concentrated on the music, as he did on IMAGINE, etc.)

Most underrated: PRESS TO PLAY.  (I like every song on this 1986 release from Paul.)
