Since there's no 'general solo' forum, I'll post this here because I like "Happy X-mas" better than "Wonderful Christmastime." Every Christmas, when WC is played on the radio, I remember my uncle making a smart-ass comment about the song - how it's so gay.
Anyway, a-hem, the point of this is the ask the members of this forum which song you'd pick for life? If you could only listen to one of the two for the rest of your life, which would you pick?
-
Happy X-Mas easily.
-
Wonderful Christmastime i have a day off War on Christmas Day :)
Never thought of it as been Gay ? but it is a happy little ditty and as got better with age , i once read Paul had written another Christmas song ?
DaveRam :)

Yeah, one that people on this forum are trashing so badly. "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reggae." There's a thread found on the Macca forum.

macca's for me, it's a nice little diitty. not great but nice.
I've never been a big fan of the Lennon one even though
it was a good message!
i'm not a big fan of christmas songs anyway. :-/

Wonderful Christmastime for me
-
The poll would look a little stronger for me if only tkitna had voted!
For the period that Lennon recorded "Happy X-Mas," it is surprisingly to my taste. This was the early seventies, and the majority of Lennon material from that time period doesn't do well with me ("Imagine" being the exception), but "Happy X-Mas" could have easily been a part of his 1980 efforts. Its simply beautiful.
I hate Melissa Ethridge for covering it. Now, at Christmastime, you hear HER version more than JOHN'S. Before she covered it, it was ALL JOHN! Now he has to share Christmas with Melissa. Ugh.
-
I can't stand either of them.
-
Happy Xmas, without a doubt. Paul is my favorite, but John did it better this time. Happy Xmas is such a beautiful song...
Wonderful Christmastime a gay song? Are you kidding me? You're maybe confusing it with I Will Survive or YMCA, both singles from the same year (1979) (interesting, isn't it? ;D ).
-
Maybe he meant Gay, in the old fashioned sense, i.e.: gleeful, jovial, glad, joyous, happy, cheerful, sprightly, blithe, airy, light-hearted; vivacious.
-
No, I believe he meant 'fruitty.' lol

Sorry. Fixed.

Sorry. Fixed.
LOL!! Thanks (not that it helped. Looks like we're losing.) :)
-
Happy Xmas takes it easily. I usually enjoy Paul's fluff, but Christmas fluff is pushing it a little too far for enjoyment.
-
Happy X-Mas by far. I HATE Wonderful Christmastime. Happy X-Mas has heart and a message. It's a great song in general. Even with Yoko's backing vocals. Wonderful Christmas time is cheesy!
-
Wonderful Christmastime sounds like a joke but I am a bit tired of Happy Xmas so I vote for the first one.
-
I voted for Happy Xmas..yeah it is getting on and a bit tired, but still like the meaning.
-
Wonderful Christmastime.
-
War Is Over by far. It's way less dated, has a great message, and I've always been rather fond of children's choirs.
-
I like both
-
Great if you go and come back you can vote for rubbish twice :D :D :D (Simply Having A) Wonderful Christmastime ;D
-
I voted for Happy Xmas. If I hear it too much Wonderful Christmastime ends up getting on my nerves...
-
John and Paul are both back in the UK charts with these Yuletide songs , John's at #40 and Paul's at # 70 ;)
-
Thanks, DaveRam!
I heard Wonderful Christmastime for the first time the other day. Wish I hadn't...
HAPPY XMAS!!! :)
-

HAPPY XMAS!!! :)
It is truly awful.
John's is a masterpiece.
-
i know it sounds terrible to say, but i've never liked John's Happy Xmas. :-/
macca's is certaintly not his best work but nice enough.
and there's always George's Ding Dong Ding Dong!
-
I like how happy wonderful christmas time sounds.
-
I've heard Wonderful Christmastime play at least one time everyday on the radio since Thanksgiving (bigeyes1)
So I think it's understandable that my vote goes to Happy X-Mas.
-
John's at # 41 and Paul's made a late charge to # 44 on the UK charts :)
-
Although it could be considered a corny song, I prefer A wonderful Christmas time, it makes me happy to hear it.
;D
-
Johns Happy Xmas.
-
Wonderful Christmastime is just McCartney fluff I feel. No one w/ a modicum of intelligence can compare it to John and Yoko's more serious world wish of peace during the Vietnam era evidenced in "Happy X-Mas (War is over) which is far superior on many levels. Maybe Paul's record is more musical, but it's lyrical content is typical McCartney self-indulgence, whereas John and Yoko's words rang true that particular christmas. I speak from experience--people were effected by the song then. One of my best friends was killed in Nam (Da Nang Valley, 1970)

Wonderfull Christmas Time will always be one of my favorites because i grew up dancing to it every christmas eve. ;D ;D
-
Happy X-Mas easily.
A pity tho that this was another classic Lennon song -besides Give Peace A Chance- where John simply stole the melody. Happy Xmas is John's version of the Irish folksong Stewball. Listen here:

Wonderful Christmastime without a doubt! It was always my favorite Christmas song since I was very, very young. Before I even knew who Paul McCartney was! In fact, I didn't even know he sung it until last year! I'm sorry, but Yoko's backing vocals really ruin Happy Xmas for me, though I do still enjoy the song.
-
Hmmm. I think Wonderful Christmastime, mostly because I'm a Macca fan, and like I_Will, Yoko kinda ruins Happy X-Mas for me.
-
Youtube link? ::)
Yes, it is a YouTube link. Click on it and then... *magic*. ha2ha

Yeah...
Do you have a youtube link for the song he supposed to have stolen for Give Peace a Chance?

Yeah...

I have it at home on an ancient old cd (from about 1800 or so). It's an old mantra from India. I will rip it tonight or tomorrow.

Happy X-mas for me, but Paul's is okay. I've heard both a lot this year.
-
I think 'Wonderful Christmastime' is more into the holiday spirit than 'Happy X-mas'
I mean let's be honest, no one really thinks about how rest of the world is doing on Christmas Day.

I think you are mistaken.

Thanks Bobber. I really appreciate it!

I'm going to have to disagree.
-
I guess both have their thing. "Wonderful Christmas Time" is something warmer, to enjoy the holidays with our friends and family and be happy to be there. "Happy Xmas" is more reflexive, talks about all the problems that society tries to forget with all the presents and stuff from this season.
Definitely, both are pretty awesome :)

Actually, that's a better opinion than mine!
Sorry about the other one, guys. :)
