Music That Leaves You Cold
« on: June 16, 2015, 08:06:55 AM »

I was thinking today about why we like what we like in music. Clearly everyone here is a Beatle fan which means we like qualities in music that characterise The Beatles. Obviously that's not the extent of our musical likes which I'm sure for many of us a wide and varied.

But I was pondering music that I just can't get into at all. That is really "Muzak to my ears" (aside from Muzak of course). I can find something in most styles of music. Even rap and hip hop, which is pretty far from my tastes, I can get into the choruses or something in the rhythm.

For me there's one particular style I just can't get into at all. It's best characterised as female vocal jazz I suppose. I'm thinking of the smooth female voice often singing more off the melody than on it. Going into weird improvisations. I can understand that they're good singers  and all. It just leaves me completely unmoved. It makes me switch channels faster than any other type of music I can think of.

So I'm wondering if, among we Beatle fans, what music can you simply not abide. That leaves you completely unmoved.

Unmentionable. Name something you don't like and suddenly you've tipped over someone's sacred cow. (ahem...Syd Barrett)

The color settings on my screen are alright.  icon_good

And I hear you. I never got into prog rock and bands like Pink Floyd at all. I usually like classical works, but can't listen to it when there's a lady singer involved. Freestyle jazz is not my thing either. And I love everything after 1970.  icon_cool  Nah, almost.

I never liked punk and I  really don't like much of todays stuff to put it politely! 4ac It doesn't mean there's not a catchy song here or there , it's just posturing in the name of music.

Rat Pack stuff, and I'm with you on jazz with vocals, though I love all those Modern Jazz LPs from the 50s and 60s on Impulse! and Blue Note.
'Rock' after the 60s also offers nothing that wasn't done much better in the 60s. By then it's just a commodity.

In essence, I'm up for pretty much everything from the 50s and 60s that isn't Supper Club Jazz.

Classic Country is good.  Bluegrass is even better!

The more extreme thos of Metal (death, thrash, speed) are pretty hard to get into. They become almost loud white noise.

I'm not into that country pop stuff you get. I guess it's the Garth Brooks or Shania Twain variety. Although some of the alt country stuff is fine. It's more like folk music I suppose.

Right, Moog.  Country has branched out over the years.  I still like what I liked in the 60s, Classic Country.  This kind of stuff...

Opera, Metal, Hip-Hop and slick modern Country.

There are rare exceptions to all the above.

That's pretty much where I'm at except that I don't know enough about opera to say that I don't like it. I did, however, thoroughly enjoy Renée Fleming's performance of The National Anthem at the Super Bowl in 2014. It was such a pleasure to hear someone who was able to do it so effortlessly.

I like that stuff too but today's country, which occupies so many spots on the radio dial around here, does indeed leave me cold. I was really dismayed to hear it playing while I waited to have surgery a couple of years ago but I figured if that's what makes the doctor happy then I'd deal with it. LOL Besides, I forgot all about it while I was trying not see what was coming at my face!
