Title: Best debut albums

1. Mr. Tambourine Man (The Byrds, 1965). The consummation of folk rock in an album.

2. The Doors (The Doors, 1967). Dark and entertaining at the same time.

3. Jefferson Airplane Takes Off (Jefferson Airplane, 1966). Folk rock again, with a deeper sound.

4. My Generation (The Who, 1965). Probably the first punk rock album, but including artistic merits.

5. Please Please Me (The Beatles, 1963). As primitive as it is, it was the beginning of a musical revolution.

If you offered me the whole of the Stones' back catalogue since Brian died, I still wouldn't rate the best song above any of the 12 on their first LP.

That said, for me the best debut LPs are the ones pre-Beatles/Stones.

Elvis, Johnny Burnette & The Rock 'n' Roll Trio, Chuck Berry, The Crickets, Billy Fury etc.....it's then when the musical revolution began, not 1963.

Id argue for including The Moody Blues Days of Future Past. While technically not a debut album it effectively was, since it introduced the Hayward-Lodge dominance and was completely removed from the Denny Laine-led previous album. It's a wonder they kept the same name given the radical changes in group make-up and sound. Although I suppose a name like that has such a classic ring to it you wouldn't give it up easily.

The best debut albums are post '65-'66, because that's when the market fully shifted from singles to albums-orientated.

I would add:

Santana (1969) - Latin-tinged rock
Cheap Trick (1977) - Power Pop with an edge
Led Zeppelin (1969) - Love them or hate them, the landscape of rock changed after this album
Creedence Clearwater Revival (1968) - Swamp rock from the U.S. west coast
Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble-Texas Flood (1983) - Gave the blues back to rock, which the 80s needed for sure.

Can't vouch for the U.S. but the shift from 45s to LP occurred, thankfully for the integrity and forward propulsion of the 60s, a considerable amount of time after 1965.
I'd date it to Led Zeppelin's (dire) debut and, even then, 'Whole Lotta Love' from their second (dire) album was available on 45 for a short period.
