That's an interesting video. What show was that?

I'm pretty sure that was Dick Clark's Where The Action Is...

The Raiders were on that show a lot.

I couldn't tell if that was The Raiders in that video with The Shangri-Las or just some others guys copying them. Maybe Where the Action Is was where I first laid eyes on Mark Lindsay. I remember being mesmerized by him on TV when I was very little.

The Shangri-Las took on The Beatles and the rest of The British Invasion in 1964 and 1965 scoring a #1 hit with Leader of the Pack, a #5 hit with Remember (Walking in the Sand) and a couple of top 20s,  Not bad for four teenage girls from Queens, New York!

Even though they weren't strictly a girl group, I still think The Exciters deserve a mention here:

"According to Jason Ankeny at AllMusic, the Exciters' version of "Tell Him" "...boasted an intensity that signified a sea change in the presentation and perception of femininity in popular music, paving the way for such tough, sexy acts as the Shangri-Las and the Ronettes." Wikipedia

They started out in 1961, similarly to The Shangri-Las, as a group of girls from Queens who went to school together. By the time they recorded "Tell Him" they had replaced one of the girls with a guy but the sound still is that of a girl group. I love this song!

I remember The Exciters!  Great song that Tell Him!  I considered them a Girl Group and I found out later that there was a male in the group.  He didn't contribute much, just a couple of bass lines here and there.

They never released a big hit after Tell Him.  I think groups like The Chantels, The Shirelles, and The Crystals did more to  "pave the way" for The Ronettes and The Shangri-Las.

I do give The Exciters a lot of credit for recording Doo Wah Diddy Diddy in 1964...

But it took The British Invasion to turn it into a hit later that year...

Girls that rock...I love it! Those are some great names too. LOL I've heard a band on Pandora that I like but I can't remember their name and I can't find the song. It's about a girl who's out with this guy and she's telling him to either get rid of his wedding ring or go back to his wife, who kicked him out him. I guess you'd have to actually hear it to appreciate it.  ;D

Those girls looked good, sang good, and played their own instruments.  The world wasn't ready for anything like that in the 60s!

No, it wasn't really ready until the '80's.

I like this one a lot...
