Title: Moscow, Russia
Post by: Dmitry on April 23, 2008, 10:54:16 AM
Since I moved to Moscow in October 2006 I liked it much.
I like it as a cultural center of Russia and one of the culture capitals of the World.
- There is a lot of cultural events hold here every day. Classical music concerts, ballets, rock-music concerts, various exhibitions, theaters, cinemas, etc.
- Moscow is a historic capital. Many landmarks and just old-fashioned districts and beautiful places. You can walk during all days in Moscow and every day find something special.
Of course there are a lot of things people don't like here. We don't talk about politics here ;)
- There are huge traffic jams during all day. They don't solve a problem with a lot of cars, you can see one car on another in every court.
- Contaminated air, especially near broad streets.

Among things one can be afraid of here in Moscow I'm sure Moscow is the place must to visit for people who are interested in seeing the World and in liberalizing.

What do you think dear forum members?!
I would like to show Moscow to whom of you who'll visit it while I'm here :)

To be honest Dmitry - St Petersburg holds a much greater attraction for me, and if I could only visit one Russian city that would be it. It's probably Hollywoods fault, but I have an image of Moscow as being a bit scary and forebiding.
A (I think anyway) interesting Moscow story that I've seen on some history sites, but I've never been able to validate: apparently the first German shell ( a blind ranging shot) fired at Moscow in late 1941 hit Moscow Zoo and killed the only elephant in Moscow. I wonder what odds those German gunners would have got for that little feat. People quote it as an example of the law of big numbers - million in one chances do happen, you just need the million examples.
Any verification of this by you Russian folk would be greatly appreciated.

That's the problem is  :o Most foreign people think Moscow is a bit scary and forebiding, as you said Kevin, but nobody can offer a real example of it that can prevent you from visiting Moscow ;) I think tourists feel comfortable here enough. The one true thing about Moscow is that it is has expensive hotels.
St Petersburg is a great city too, I've never been there. I wish I could.

As about elephant :( I was trying to find out about this story long ago, but found nothing :( I was in a Moscow Zoo and didn't see any mention of it in the elephants enclosure.

I really enjoyed my visit to St Petersburg. The history and museums are awesome. I would like to see Moscow as well; I always enjoy seeing new places. The Russian people were very friendly and welcoming to me, which was lucky, because I don't speak a word except a badly pronounced "spasibo". I thanked my way across Russia! ;D

Your pictures are beautiful!

You know Dmitry how I'd love to visit Russia... :) :) Including Moscow. It's not scary for me at all!  ;D I'm not a coward person. :P It's been my dream for a long time, and to be honest, I could even live there! Although, I don't know how I'd survive COLD winter...  ??)

It takes about 12 hours by train Moscow-Kiev. I think I'll travel!
But the concert is free, I can't imagine how they handle it. Thousands of people from Ukraine and Russia will arrive. I don't know how to be...  :-/

I LOVE the church, is it???  With the turrents on top and the colors.  That's what I would love to see if I go to Moscow.  My uncle went to Moscow a couple of years back to cut a deal with the Russians to buy his soy beans he farms here in Arkansas.  He said after every little change of subject in the meetings, everyone would do a shot of vodka.  He got so drunk he puked on the roadside of the car he was in and..............get this..........lost his fasle teeth!!!!

A bit off-topic, but since vodka is being mentioned quite a bit, and KE just mentioned our friend who makes his own... it reminded me of this film (very educational - shows vodka being made, except illegally ;) ):

Several years had passed since I moved to Moscow, and now I see Russia's capital not only as a tourist, but also as a resident. Today, dear madams and messieurs, I can not invite you here to see things, which see not only me, but all residents and guests of Moscow. And this is the center of the city:

It is not only about graffiti and litter, it is about many things that make the city look like a rubbish heap, look like it is destroying. I didn't see it 4 years ago.

That's what I found when we went back to St Petersburg. It is definately NOT the Russia I knew (from parents, stories and movies). The streets were full of drunk people, there was rubbish on the streets, it was dirty and the people on the little buses were so rude! But the tourists places are stil beautiful!

What do Moscow residents think about the situation?

What did you do in Piter (St. Petersburg)? Just tourism? Where are the pictures?  ;)

I'm not sure what they think but it seems to me that most of them just got used to it. At least I don't ever heard any complains from residents of Moscow with whom I work. Few write about the problems on Internet and try to do something. As about me, I live here without registration, which is common thing here, and I just want to leave.

Among other things residents of Moscow can't choose a mayor by themselves. The president decides who will rule the city. And it's all about the money. The same situation in many towns of Russia - residents can't choose a mayor. I think if they could it would me much better for people.

I visited my grandfather and my aunt. First time I saw Russia after leaving it in '90 - so I was also a tourist there at the time. As for pictures, I was there in 2003 and we had no digital camera. All the harcopy photos are in my parents house. I might take a picture of a few when I visit them next

As about me, I live here without registration, which is common thing here, and I just want to leave.
What do you mean you are not registered? Is leaving Moscow hard (financially)?
Title: Re: Moscow, Russia
Post by: Dmitry on March 22, 2012, 06:05:10 AM
What do you mean you are not registered? Is leaving Moscow hard (financially)?

In Russia, when you live somewhere but not in the place where you were born, you have to be official registered there, you have to have a paper that say that you live or rent an apartment. But here there is no such practice and a person who lease an apartment do not help you to get such paper. It looks like you are living in your home town but you work in another place. I think 90% of the people, who rent and live away from there birthplaces, have no official papers. I read that in America there is not such thing as a registration, we can live wherever you want, but here if you rent you have to go to some state institution, pay some registration fee and get a document; and do it each year.

And about leaving Moscow. Leaving for another town in Russia is not hard, because Moscow so expensive that other cities and towns seems to be OK if we talk about finances. But the life in these towns is not good. I hardly see my future in Russia. Right now I try to leave for Canada.
