Title: What was Pauls last great song?
Post by: tkitna on March 19, 2012, 01:15:38 AM
Kevin got me thinking about this. What do you consider to be Pauls last great song that he wrote? I'm going to have to really think about this before I post.

I've said on a few different occasions that 'Too Much Rain' was his best offering in some years, but I dont know if I could go as far as classifying it as a GREAT song.

The search continues.

he's written some good songs since then, but IMO nothing 'great'

I know, but it struck me funny as hell. I know your stance on the solo stuff and to mention a song on his very first album was the ultimate irony. Its perfect. I'm still laughing.

I think Band on the Run was likely the last "great" song.  Many very good songs and enjoyable songs along the way however.

It's hard to believe that it's been 32 years since Paul gave us Coming Up.

I agree with you, glass onion.  Indeed it was the most recent Paul song I included in my selections in the The Best Of The Solo Beatles thread.  It was very popular when it was released and everyone seemed to be singing it to themselves.  The video was ingenious and probably accounted for that.

I dunno, I liked "My Valentine."  I thought "Dance Tonight" was memorable.  If you just go by single sales you would have to go back to the '80s, but while he hasn't done well in that format for twenty years he has done some terrific work during that time.

I liked, really liked a lot of songs over the years, but Hall of fame (great) worthy songs for me have been missing since Band on the Run.

If you consider most musicians would be thrilled for one or two truly great songs in their career and Paul (and the boys) have dozens, not too bad.

Define "great"... Are we talking about Let It Be/Hey Jude/Penny Lane "great", or anything well above average?

It is not to my personal taste, but I think Paul's "Mull of Kintyre" remains the top-selling commercial single in the UK.  That has to rank.  "Say Say Say" may be royally hated by many, but you can't argue with its worldwide popularity.  "Silly Love Songs" practically defined the summer of '76.  After that, it gets into personal taste.  "Wanderlust" and "Calico Skies" are gems that nobody knows, in fact, half of "Tug of War" is great imho.  "Band on the Run" was his post-Beatles highlight, but I don't think that's the only great thing he's done in 40 years, that's setting the bar a little high for any man or act.

Spring and summer here in the Northeast.

Thanks!

Oh, I thought of one that has to be considered great.  Do you know how difficult it is to become a seasonal that is played year after year after year.  "Wonderful Christmastime" is a great song.

'My Valentine' is pretty damn good. It's never a million seller but it's great according to me. That's all that matters... I like 'I Want To Come Home' and 'Sing The Changes' too. Jenny Wren, alot of Chaos...

Yes! Every summer when I was growing up had that one special song and this was it that year. That was a great summer; the highlight was turning 13. Too bad I don't get that excited about my birthday anymore.  ;D

There's one of more songs on almost every album by Paul that I like and that I think are really good. His last GREAT song? That's pretty hard to tell. Maybe even Hey Jude. Maybe I'm Amazed and Band On The Run come to mind. Maybe 1985.

Of course it all depends on how you measure greatness. Is it singles sales? You'd probably have to go back to '87 for that, is it just personal opinion? I guess that's more it. Of course if you are now a middle aged stick in the mud where things are never as good as they was when you were a young 'un then that is going to taint your views somewhat. Is it not?

If you say Band On The Run, Maybe I'm Amazed etc then maybe 30/40 years of hearing them and the memories of youth have some bearing on your opinion...

I mean Silly Love Songs is a heck of a catchy melody, it's quite loveable yes, but it's no way as affecting as say a Jenny Wren or Calico Skies or even some even more obscure recent b-sides.

60/70 year olds don't get as much air-play as 20/30 year olds...

Blah blah...

Back To The Egg is still, on the whole, cheese disco balls pap. But then I wasn't around then...

I think there are 2 criteria to this question - Paul has had a solo and a Wing's career after the Beatles. So maybe pick one from Wings & one from his solo career which would include "McCartney" to "Kisses on the Bottom" since there are a couple of originals on his latest.
So, from his solo career: Too much rain
Wings: Jet
Thanks

Geez, I made this harder than it was. After reviewing Pauls solo work backwards, I came upon this one. Its only my favorite tune he's ever written. Wonder why I didnt just blurt that out to begin with.

Last great song: "Band On The Run"
Last unforgetable song: "Maybe I'm Amazed"
Last immortal song: "Let It Be"

Wow, immortal song, that bar is ratcheted up there pretty high now.  How many songwriters ever craft an immortal song?  I'd say Paul has over half a dozen great songs, though.  Yesterday, Hey Jude, Let it Be, Band on the Run, Eleanor Rigby, Maybe I'm Amazed, Silly Love Songs, Wonderful Christmastime, Coming Up, My Valentine, Calico Skies, I'm sure I could come up with more but those are off the top of the noggin.  And yes, despite it being recent, My Valentine is superb, classic, a standard in the making that crooners will be singing long after Lady Gaga's trash is rendered obsolete.

Nah, I dont mean the last immortal song he may have written, I just mean, what was the last song you thought was actually great.

We All Stand Together, is a better tune than anything on Pipes Of Peace. But it's not exactly the song you want to get caught in your brain. Haha.

Anyway, I'm listening to this...
