What was Pauls last great song?

Kevin got me thinking about this. What do you consider to be Pauls last great song that he wrote? I'm going to have to really think about this before I post.

I've said on a few different occasions that 'Too Much Rain' was his best offering in some years, but I dont know if I could go as far as classifying it as a GREAT song.

The search continues.

I know, but it struck me funny as hell. I know your stance on the solo stuff and to mention a song on his very first album was the ultimate irony. Its perfect. I'm still laughing.

I think Band on the Run was likely the last "great" song.  Many very good songs and enjoyable songs along the way however.

It's hard to believe that it's been 32 years since Paul gave us Coming Up.

I agree with you, glass onion.  Indeed it was the most recent Paul song I included in my selections in the The Best Of The Solo Beatles thread.  It was very popular when it was released and everyone seemed to be singing it to themselves.  The video was ingenious and probably accounted for that.

I dunno, I liked "My Valentine."  I thought "Dance Tonight" was memorable.  If you just go by single sales you would have to go back to the '80s, but while he hasn't done well in that format for twenty years he has done some terrific work during that time.

I liked, really liked a lot of songs over the years, but Hall of fame (great) worthy songs for me have been missing since Band on the Run.

If you consider most musicians would be thrilled for one or two truly great songs in their career and Paul (and the boys) have dozens, not too bad.

Define "great"... Are we talking about Let It Be/Hey Jude/Penny Lane "great", or anything well above average?

It is not to my personal taste, but I think Paul's "Mull of Kintyre" remains the top-selling commercial single in the UK.  That has to rank.  "Say Say Say" may be royally hated by many, but you can't argue with its worldwide popularity.  "Silly Love Songs" practically defined the summer of '76.  After that, it gets into personal taste.  "Wanderlust" and "Calico Skies" are gems that nobody knows, in fact, half of "Tug of War" is great imho.  "Band on the Run" was his post-Beatles highlight, but I don't think that's the only great thing he's done in 40 years, that's setting the bar a little high for any man or act.

Thanks!

Oh, I thought of one that has to be considered great.  Do you know how difficult it is to become a seasonal that is played year after year after year.  "Wonderful Christmastime" is a great song.

'My Valentine' is pretty damn good. It's never a million seller but it's great according to me. That's all that matters... I like 'I Want To Come Home' and 'Sing The Changes' too. Jenny Wren, alot of Chaos...

Yes! Every summer when I was growing up had that one special song and this was it that year. That was a great summer; the highlight was turning 13. Too bad I don't get that excited about my birthday anymore.  ;D

There's one of more songs on almost every album by Paul that I like and that I think are really good. His last GREAT song? That's pretty hard to tell. Maybe even Hey Jude. Maybe I'm Amazed and Band On The Run come to mind. Maybe 1985.
