For those who like Simon and Garfunkel...
« on: April 30, 2007, 08:04:13 PM »

I learned 3 interesting things this weekend, on songfacts.com! They are all about Simon and Garfunkel.

-"The Sound of Silence" took 6 months to write. Paul Simon wrote about a line a day.
-The crashing drum effect heard in "The Boxer" was achieved by setting up a drumkit and some microphones in an elevator. Yes, an ELEVATOR.

And most interesting of all...

Have you ever heard of Saint Cecilia? Well, she is the patron saint of musicians. I read a very interesting theory saying that the song "Cecilia" is written about her. It makes a lot of sense when you think about it. We already know that Paul Simon wrote the song to fill up space on the album. Perhaps the song was a prayer to St. Cecilia because he had writer's block. Think about it: The chorus is telling her to come home, he wants his inspiration back. "Making love in the afternoon with Cecilia/I got up to wash my face/When I come back to bed/Someones taken my place"- making love= writing songs, and he's expressing how other artists took his place in the music world. "Jubilation, she loves me again/I fall on the floor and I laughing" because he wrote a whole song, this must mean that St. Cecilia is smiling on him!

Anyways, just thought I'd post that 'cause I thought it was really neat. Make of it what you will.

My favorite Simon & Garfunkel trivia fact:

"Sound Of Silence" originally featured just S&G's vocals and Paul Simon's acoustic guitar. After the single flopped, producer Tom Wilson took the recording to the Columbia Records Studios where some session musicians had just finished recording "Like A Rolling Stone" with Bob Dylan. He asked them if they'd mind staying a little longer to record overdubs for "Sound Of Silence", and the rest is history.

So Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" S&G's "Sound Of Silence" (minus vocals and acoustic guitar) werd recorded on the same day, in the same studio, by the same musicians.

Wow, that's amazing. Especially since they were both such groundbreaking songs, too.

Producer Joe Meek used tricks like that all the time. Do you know that song "Johnny Remember Me" by John Leyton and ever wondered how he got the instruments to sounds so distant and eerie? Meek recorded the song in his own home and had the band scattered over his whole house. The drummer was in the bathroom, the string section was lined up on the stairs and the brass section was on a different floor.

I couldn't agree more. Also, lots of outtakes from McCartney's new album ''Driving Rain''.
I've just seen a face in duet with Paul Simon is already worth the album.

sound quality is great on here as is already stated. Not the best of performances from either
of the Pauls (especially Mr Simon seems a bit off form here vocally), but hey it was a charity
show and it all sounds like a lot of fun was had by all Interesting to hear the
rehearsal/soundcheck on disc 2, and the other tracks from the Wingspan Radio show are a nice
inclusion too.

Definetely a must-have. Paul does a bit of a poetry slam with "Jerk of all jerks". The sound
quality is great. The second CD has some great acoustic versions of Wingspan songs and
"Let Me Roll It" alone is worth picking that up.

1981: Simon and Garfunkel reunited for a concert in New York's Central Park. Over 400,000 fans attend the show. The performance was recorded for a record and video release.

And to think it was a free concert!

So Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" S&G's "Sound Of Silence" (minus vocals and acoustic guitar) werd recorded on the same day, in the same studio, by the same musicians.

Yeah, Hal Blaine added drums and the song went to #1. See how important drums are?  ha2ha

(Now i'm reading it was Bobby Gregg. I'm confused. I'm going to have to investigate this further.)

How's it going Mairi? I hope all is well with you. I LOVE SIMON AND GARFUNKEL! I love the songs "Mrs Robinson (I've met my share of Mrs. Robinson's)," "The Sound Of Silence," "Bridge Over Troubled Water (I love Elvis' version too)," "Song (Feelin' Groovy)," "I Am A Rock," "Homeward Bound," "America" and "Cecilia" just to name a few. Take care.

it is sad to read that Paul Simon wrote Cecilia it as filler.  I think it works brilliantly and is one of many favorites by S&G.  Is that your opinion or was Paul Simon quoted saying it was essentially a filler?
