Didn't Canada just have a birthday too? Funny, countries having birthdays. Does every country do this type of thing or what?

Have a nice day everybody on the other side of the Atlantic.

Happy birthday to our grand dame. Also, happy birthday to Canada (belated).
Not sure if anyone cares, but the Swiss National Day is coming up on August 1st.

Happy 4th July America, at last you have your independence with Barack Obama!!! :D

Bring on the fireworks!
And I think France has their independence day on the 14th this month.

Have a very happy and safe 4th of July all my fellow americans! And for those who are not American, you can still party, I use any excuse to party myself ;D This is probably my favorite holiday: sunshine, barbeque, beer, and fireworks! What more could you ask for?!?!?!
Happy Birthday America!!

Happy Independence Day, dear Americans!

Argentina's independence day is July 9, 1816, though everything started on the revolution of May 25, 1810. Last year Argentina was 200 years old and there was a big party here as in U.S.A. in 1976.

I have to say, this is the July 4 I am least excited about. This country is going downhill, fast, IMO. Oh, well, at least SyFy reinstated it's Independence Day Twilight Zone marathon. ;)

You're traveling through another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. That's the signpost up ahead— your next stop, the Twilight Zone!

I hope everyone here in the US has a happy Independence Day. Or even if you happen to be in the Twilight Zone again. ;) These are the only fireworks I'll be seeing since it's supposed to rain tomorrow night.

ha2ha I was down in Rapid City with my kids; lots of fun stuff to do, AND the hotel had SyFy, so of course I had to camp out in front of the TV at day's end.
The funny thing is, when we were leaving Bismarck, we saw a hitchhiker, and then when we got to Rapid City, we saw what we all swore was the SAME hitchhiker, just like in that classic TZ episode: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0734644/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0734644/)

I love this episode so I watched the whole thing...with more to follow! I don't know if we get any stations that show The Honeymooners. I haven't seen it in a long time. I'm glad you posted it Barry! Who has the New Year's Eve marathon?
-
You're welcome, Kelley. WPIX Channel 11 (New York City) airs The Honeymooners Marathon.

I love WPIX; we used to get it in my hometown of Syracuse.

WPIX has long been an innovative TV station, Kathy. They did The Twilight Zone Marathon before SyFy took over several years ago.

I used to watch The Honeymooners on that channel every night when I was in dental hygiene school! Everywhere I've lived I've had WPIX until Time Warner took it away about 10 years ago. They also took the FOX station that came from NYC. And the good PBS station. And moved most of my favorite channels to the upper tier so I can't watch them in the kitchen. So I guess no Honeymooners Marathon on New Years Eve for me. :(

Indeed he would have -- very impressive! I see those musicians do the same type of "roll step" my daughters' marching band does. I'm not sure whether that's the exact name of it, but I did recognize it.
Those kids must have worked really hard. They look and sound wonderful.

I am always very impressed by kids in marching bands. It's hard work! I did it for a year and just wasn't very good at it. When I told my mom I was quitting she was very upset because she really liked working at the concession stand. I told go ahead, work there anyway but she said she'd feel foolish. LOL

I am one of those people who can't walk and chew gum at the same time, so I'd probably be terrible at it! Fortunately, my high school did not have a marching band, so I never had to try.
Just found this clip of my daughters' marching band from last year. They are not nearly as polished as the band in the clip Barry posted (not even close), but thought I'd share it anyway. After 30 seconds, they actually DO start marching. ;)

-

Aw, thanks; I think they look pretty good, too! It's ironic that you mentioned the uniforms; I detest them! That's mostly because just the sight of the uniform yanks me back to a horrible trip to Colonial Williamsburg back when I was about 10. The family had gone to Virginia Beach for a week. My sister and I got horrible (think lobster-hued) sunburns the first day because we'd applied sunscreen only once in the morning and then spent the entire day in the pool. (This was back in the late 70s.) Do you think my parents would have just let us rest inside the next day? Noooo...they took us to Williamsburg in 90-degree heat and marched us around the entire day. I ended up in the ER with sun poisoning.
Wild horses could never drag me back to Colonial Williamsburg!
So, I see those band uniforms and cringe, LOL. Everyone else in town loves them, too; I'm the lone standout. ;D

Good! She should get herself a Boston Terrier like the ones we used to have. I used to sing I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy to them, with a few word changes. I think they liked it; I know the kids seemed to. That was back when the kids still liked to hear their mom sing. ;D
-
^
She had two Yorkshire Terriers over the years. Each lived to be very old and, typical of Yorkies, developed severe GI problems and had to be euthanized. I don't think she'll ever get another dog.
-
Yorkies are sweet little dogs. One of my online friends that I met years ago on the AOL Boston Terrier board has them. I always thought it would be nice to feel that silky-looking hair. I finally got a chance when a lady brought one into the library. I wasn't disappointed! But I understand how Sharon feels. It seems to get more difficult every time I go through it, like I did in January.
-
^
And she had to do that twice. Both dogs were cute and nice little girls with the sweetest personalities. She never wants to go through that again.

Yes, as we grow older our calendars fill with sad memories. But let's not let them overshadow the happy memories our calendars have accrued.
On July Fourth, I wax philosophical when I think how brave my maternal and paternal grandparents were when they left their homes in The Ukraine a century ago and immigrated to the United States.. They came to this country with only what they could carry by hand and with the dream of starting a new life and raising a family in a country that promised freedom.
Neil Diamond's family history is similar to mine and he expressed his feelings so well in the song he wrote...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZXcPva-xLA# (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZXcPva-xLA#)
Far
We've been traveling far
Without a home
But not without a star
Free
Only want to be free
We huddle close
Hang on to a dream
On the boats and on the planes
They're coming to America
Never looking back again
They're coming to America
Home, don't it seem so far away
Oh, we're traveling light today
In the eye of the storm
In the eye of the storm
Home, to a new and a shiny place
Make our bed, and we'll say our grace
Freedom's light burning warm
Freedom's light burning warm
Had my grandparents not come to The United States, they would have perished and I wouldn't be here today thankfully wishing my country Happy Birthday.

You haven't derailed anything, Kathy. Remember, this is a forum; a place, meeting, or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged.
My post, in its entirety, was meant to show how fortunate I feel to be here today wishing America a happy birthday. I too have sad memories on my calendar of life as well as happy ones. That calendar would not have existed if my grandparents hadn't immigrated here.
When it comes to grief, I was taught this at a young age in elementary school:
To every thing there is a season,
and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
a time to cast away stones,
and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
a time to get, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
a time to rend, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time of war, and a time of peace.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

The Fourth of July will come to a close here in the Eastern Time Zone in five minutes. So until next year, what is better than The Stars and Stripes Forever with three piccolos?

That's very sad Kathy, x
A hug from me.
From me too.
Thanks, Kevin and Barry, very kind. I shouldn't have said anything. This year, it just got to me more than usual.
-
I'll grieve all I like, thankyouverymuch. But I don't want to further derail this thread.
Ehh, Barry, I apologize for snapping at you yesterday. As I said, this year's Fourth was tougher than previous ones for some reason. But I should have held my virtual tongue.
Hope your sister had a good birthday.

Apologies aren't necessary, Kathy...
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak
It was your time to speak.
Hope your sister had a good birthday.
She did. She spent her birthday with close friends she's known since childhood.

Thanks, Kev. Both sets of my grandparents immigrated from Russia in 1920. The first they saw of The United States was the Statue of Liberty, just like the picture I posted shows. They were travelling light that day with just what they could carry with two hands. They were the bravest people I've ever known.

Mine too, from Ireland and Lithuania. :) A little bit earlier, though -- late 1800s.

John Philip Sousa "The March King"
The tune to this march came to John Philip Sousa on Christmas Day 1896 while he was on a ship steaming from Europe to the United States. He transcribed the full arrangement to paper upon his arrival in the United States.

Gorgeous, and I normally adore Sousa. But I'm just not feeling patriotic this year. At all.
It's my sister's birthday today too...
I hope she has a great birthday, Barry.

Far
We've been traveling far
Without a home
But not without a star
Free
Only want to be free
We huddle close
Hang on to a dream
On the boats and on the planes
They're coming to America
Never looking back again
They're coming to America

Barry, with all due respect, I find these comments of yours offensive.

Lighten up, Kathy. My comment to Moog was meant to be a humorous response to Moog saying that "You shouldn’t underestimate how shallow we guys can be sometimes" when we were discussing Linda Ronstadt in another thread.
If you watched the movie you would have seen that neither Sousa or his wife were offended by her audition. Indeed, he hired her to go on tour with his band as a singer and dancer.
As far as Debra Paget is concerned, she's a very talented actress, singer and dancer and enjoyed a long career in motion pictures. She was perfect in her major role in Stars and Stripes Forever. She was just nineteen years old when the movie was filmed.
Earlier in that post, I gave you a time mark in that motion picture where the Stars and Stripes march came to Sousa while he was at sea. In his autobiography, he mentions this and how he transcribed the march note for note for all instruments when he got ashore. I thought you would find the ocean liner scene relevant and to your liking. I guess I was wrong.

To lighten things up around here, this clip from Stars and Stripes Forever shows Sousa (Clifton Webb) introducing the Two Step to his Washington Post...
