Title: Beatles Self References
Post by: WalrusGarden on March 02, 2009, 06:46:25 PM
I'm looking for EVERY instance of Beatles songs referring to other Beatles songs.  Any form of self reference.  Even if it sounds like allusions to future songs.

Examples:

ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE
she loves you yeah yeah yeah

WHAT GOES ON:
tell me why (we already told you why)

I AM THE WALRUS:
fly like Lucy in the sky

GLASS ONION:
I told you about STRAWBERRY FIELDS
You know the place where nothing is real
Well here's another place you can go
Where everything flows
Looking through the bent backed tulips
To see how the other half live
Looking through a glass onion
I told you about the WALRUS and me, man
You know that we're as close as can be, man
Well here's another clue for you all
The WALRUS was Paul
Standing on the cast iron shore, yeah
LADY MADONNA trying to make ends meet, yeah
Looking through a glass onion
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
Looking through a glass onion

I told you about the FOOL ON THE HILL
I tell you man he's living there still
Well here's another place you can be
Listen to me
FIXING A HOLE in the ocean
Tryin' to make a dovetail joint
Looking through a glass onion

What else is there?
These are examples of explicit lyrical self allusions.  It would be interesting to hear peoples' thoughts on other non-lyrical sonic/tonal allusions in the music itself.  Or maybe less concrete, more subjective references.

Here's a couple that came to mind:

Savoy Truffle: "We all know Ob-la-di Bla-da, but can you show me where you are?"

Fixing a Hole: "I'm taking the time for a number of things that weren't important yesterday."

Is this factual or are we reaching a tad here? Just wondering (good answer nontheless).

Are we including post-Beatle solo records? John has a veritable plethora of (generally unflattering) references to Beatles.

Well here's another place you can go

I always thought of this as a reference to There's A Place.

Just before the 'She loves you yeah yeah yeah' line in All you need is Love, Paul says 'Yesterday - oh yeah'

If we can use solo songs:  In Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder's song "What's That You're Doing", they sing "We love you, yeah, yeah, yeah."

Good question. I can't remember if I read about that line somewhere, or if I sort of thought of it myself, but I always felt that line was Paul referencing his (then current) experimentation with drugs, in a subtle way. I know Paul mentioned that the song was a drug song, and I always thought he was sort of saying that he is taking the time for drugs, something he wasn't into during the time he wrote Yesterday.

I love that line. Every time I hear it, literally every time, I get goosebumps. Great song.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  This is for one of many Beatles infographics I'm creating.  I'll post a draft of this one soon, which has a timeline with a notch for each Beatles song, and arrow paths arching from a song containing a reference back to the song to which it's alluding

I've also tentatively included arches corresponding to "here's another place you can go" (Glass Onion pointing back to There's A Place) thanks to Bobber's suggestion, and one for "I'm taking the time for a number of things that weren't important yesterday" (Fixing A Hole pointing back to Yesterday) thanks to Dr. Robert's suggestion.  I like these, but they are the only 2 of the lot that might be debatable.  What do you all think?
