Well, Paul is Pavel or Pasha in Russian. I don`t like it.
John is Ivan or Vanya, I don`t like it.
George is Georg or Gosha, I don`t like it.
Richard doesn`t exist in Russian.
If we take the Beatles wives,
1. Pattie may be Praskovya or Pasha (like Paul)
Morin maybe Marina or Marisha - very nice
Linda is Lida
Cynthia doesn`t exist
2. Olivia maybe Olga or Olya - also nice
Barbara is Varvara or Varya
Jane maybe Eugenya or Jenya - very nice
Yoko - oh, Yoko! doesn`t exist definitely.
The fact that we maintain traditional names is due to our loving to make them soft and endearing, to use hypocoristic suffixes. And this is possible only with traditionally used and familiar names. Like: Elena (Helen) is Lena, Lenochka, Lenusya, Alyona, Alyonka, Alyonushka (fantastic!). Or: Anna, Annyushka (very pretty), Annechka, Annyutic, Anyuta, Annyutka, Nyusha, Nyura. Or: Maria, Masha, Mashyunya, Mashenka (very nice), Manya, Manyasha, Maryusya.
But of course, one can give it a try.
