There is a much more melancholic tone to it, the imagery is more dry, the words more stark. I've always enjoyed it and don't think it belongs in the psychedelic basket.
I also think it's a melancholic song, a soft ballad. Though it's not among my favourites of the White Album, I always enjoy to listen it; I find it a relaxing, but in no case psychedelic.

I don't think the white album has a psychedelic song. Maybe "Dear Prudence" has a slightly psychedelic ambient, but the psychedelic days were gone at that point (at least for the Beatles).

What about Glass Onion (the coda in particular) ?

Yes, there are slight psychedelic paintings here and there (we could even mention "Wild Honey Pie", "Piggies" or "Sexy Sadie"), and the album is certainly quite experimental, but psychedelia is not a key word of the white album.

Happiness Is A Warm Gun maybe? Revolution #9 if you consider that garbage a song even? There's not much to choose from.

The "musical" passages of "Revolution 9" are psychedelic, yes. I also mentioned "Sexy Sadie" because of the piano, which is the 5th symphony of Beethoven played backwards, according to John.

Maybe it's because I listen to a lot of 50s/early 60s modern jazz and stuff like AMM, I don't know, but I like Revolution #9.
Granted it wouldn't have made a great 45 but buried deep in the White Album it works just fine.

I think Revolution 9 is interesting conceptually, a sort of an anti-climax to The White Album. Everybody was expecting some meticulous masterpiece in the vein of Tomorrow Never Knows or A Day In The Life and instead we get a sonic image of pure chaos. Musically, I think it has some interesting elements, but could've been much better.

I've grown to appreciate it, but I think it would have been better as a b-side or bonus track for the fan club than an album track.

I agree with this ^

John putting some avante garde (p*ssing about with yoko at dawn) track on a Beatles album was all wrong.......wrong audience for a drug addled sound collage............what was he thinking ?, oh wait, he wasn't..

It could have been the first Plastic Ono Band single!

Am I wrong or didn't George also help with it?

I can see why people can't stand it. As drug addled sound collages go I think it's not a bad one. It's very eerie and evocative. But I admit it doesn't feature on any of my Beatles playlists.   ;)

Not really a Beatles record but I suppose if it had gone on Two Virgins that'd have guaranteed no one would ever have heard it. Which is undoubtedly how most people would like it. ha2ha

It's neat to see all the different opinions on this song. Kevin, you really came up with a winner with your idea for discussing a song of the week!

In a sense 'Revolution #9', or a track like it, HAS to be on the White Album.

Music hall, ska, (the invention of) heavy metal, John Wesley Harding-style Dylan, nursery rhymes, politics, ballads, a pastiche of The Beach Boys, children's songs, love songs etc. etc. are all covered.

If a sound collage wasn't on there we'd all be wondering where is was!
