Guess who are topping the charts again?
« on: September 11, 2009, 07:12:09 PM »

It's 1964 all over again – Beatlemania 2.0 is making its effects felt at cash registers over the world. From Liverpool to Tokyo, buyers are snatching up the Beatles' remastered albums – and even the £170 box sets.

In the UK, the Beatles will dominate this week's album charts based on only one day of sales (plus pre-orders). According to the Official Charts Company, Liverpool's finest will have five albums in the top 20 – and 15 in the top 75 – led by Abbey Road and Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. In their first day on the market, retailers sold more than 6,000 copies of the Beatles stereo box set – helping the expensive package into the UK top 20.

"[The Beatles] are likely to dominate the album charts over the next few weeks and set a new record ... for the most albums in the charts by the same artist at any one time," a HMV spokesperson told Billboard.

In Germany the box set is the top seller for both Amazon.de and internet retailer JPC. German shops are unable to keep up with demand – and EMI is reportedly back-ordered for weeks. "I suspect that EMI did not expect such a boom in Germany and is now having trouble keeping up with demand," a spokesperson for Hamburg's Hanse-CD told Billboard.

It's a similar story in France, where the stereo box set is at No 1 on Amazon, in Canada, where the Beatles occupy the top 15 spots on HMV's charts, and in Japan, where the imported stereo set is HMV Shibuya's biggest seller. "Japan has been hit hard by Beatlemania," said a spokesperson for HMV Japan.

The only sign of weakness is in the much-hyped The Beatles: Rock Band video game, which has not even broken into the top 10 on Amazon.co.uk. Rock Band and other deluxe video games have suffered over the last year due to their high price.

I call it Beatlemania 4.0
The first in 1964, 2.0 in 1987 with the first CD release, 3.0 in 1995 with the start of the Anthology trilogy.

I'm glad it's The Beatles and not Michael Jackson.

I would still term it "Beatlemania" but in a different form.  We will never see the Beatlemania of the early-to-mid 1960s again as we can no longer enjoy their live tours.  Those of us who remember that will always remember the hysteria that accompanied The Beatles wherever they went.  Photos and films you've seen do not fully picture what went on.  It was some sight to see and we've never seen anything like it since.

But let's enjoy this new Beatlemania and consider it part of the mania that has existed for over 45 years.

I called into Leeds HMV store yesterday afternoon and i watched well over a dozen people pick up Sgt. Pepper's and Abbey Road remastered CD's , looking at the rack these two albums seemed to be doing the best business , Revolver and Rubber Soul also seemed to be selling well their racks were also quite depleted of these albums  :)
I suspect both Pepper and Abbey Road will have the best showing on the UK chart this sunday ?

Please, contemporaries, tell me, how long Beatlemania lasted. From the late 1962 to 1964? Am I right? It couldn`t have lasted longer, cause the very term "mania" means that it shouldn`t be long.

Forgot to mention Yellow Submarine is # 89 on the UK album chart  :)
Think it's interesting that Help as charted higher than A Hard Day's Night , in 1987 AHDN got to # 30 while Help got to # 61 .
Wonder if this as anything to do with Help's recent release on DVD ?

4. Beatles For Sale # 45
5. Help # 61
6. Rubber Soul # 60

The Beatles sales were 126, 479 in the UK for the first five days of the 2009 remasters release.
Seems a bit low but the boxsets sold 7,671 (stereo) and 3,305 (mono) which i  think counts for low overall sales as you get most of what you want with he boxsets ?
It will be interesting to see if the individual abums sell better in the coming weeks  ;)
