Still don't know what to make of it. But it doesn't really matter much, anyway.

Ovi, it doesn't matter much today, but you brought up an important historical point.

I believe Bob Dylan wrote 4th Time Around before the Blonde On Blonde recording sessions began on October 5, 1965.

The Beatles recorded Norwegian Wood October 12-21, 1965.

So the key event was when this meeting of The Beatles and Bob Dylan took place and who showed who what.  I guess we'll never know for sure.  It's interesting to read what John Lennon said in his interviews and what Al Kooper said in the video you posted.

I wonder what Bob Dylan remembers.

Found these Al Kooper quotes :

Al Kooper in Q Dylan: "I said to Dylan "it sounds so much like Norwegian Wood" and he said "actually Norwegian Wood sounds a lot like this! I'm afraid they took it from me and now I feel like I have to record it y'know." Apparently he'd played it for them and they'd nicked it. I asked if he was worried about getting sued and he said, "nah, the Beatles could never sue me""

I've read somewhere that "Norwegian Wood" was originally written much earlier, in February 1965, but recorded later for Rubber Soul. So I doubt that John'd nicked it. Maybe Al Kooper misunderstood Dylan's words. I think Bob meant that "Norwegian Wood" was heavily inspired in his own style, the song sounded like Dylan, so the Beatles took it from him.

I've found this:

John wrote most of Norwegian Wood in February 1965 while on skiing holiday in St Moritz, Switzerland, with his wife Cynthia, producer George Martin and George's future wife, Judy.

Thank you for researching this, Nowhere Man.  As I mentioned in my earlier post, I've always thought of 4th Time Around as Bob Dylan's answer song to The Beatles' Norwegian Wood.  And I agree with you regarding Dylan being an inspiration to John during this period of his songwriting career.  Bob Dylan influenced many songwriters during the mid-60s.

You're welcome. About the song "4th Time Around", it seems that Bob is giving a direct message to John in the last lines: "I never asked for your crutch, now don't ask for mine."

Maybe.  But only Dylan knows what that line means.  And he ain't telling.

I suppose that the "crutch" was his music, as if he was saying "I never copied your music, now don't copy mine." But that's just a free interpretation. I just know that John didn't like it.

'4th Time Around' is just so hilariously absurd.

"When she said "don't waste your words, they're just lies", I cried she was deaf."

I don't think the lyrics are absurd, Ovi.  That was Dylan's way of saying "She didn't hear a word I said."

That's a well-known, long-standing interpretation of the final line in 4th Time Around.  If John didn't like those lyrics, he must have felt guilty about copying Dylan's style of writing.

Bob Dylan copied other songwriters' styles  Here's one example...

Talkin' Dust Bowl Blues

Woody Guthrie - Talkin' Dust Bowl Blues.AVI

Woody Guthrie

Talkin' World War III Blues

Hmm, you're right, I guess. It was a poor choice of words - what I meant was something closer to "silly".

"She screamed till her face got so red, then she fell on the floor/And I covered her up and then thought I'd go look through her drawer."

I guess that's a lot like:

And when I awoke I was alone
This bird had flown
So I lit a fire
Isn't it good Norwegian wood?

Good poetry.

Even with this Norwegian Wood - 4th Time Around thing, Dylan and John were good friends...

I dont find Norwegian Wood a very listenable song. I mean, sure it's nice but it is not one of those songs that I can listen to again and again, lacks depth for me.
Interesting fact though, I learnt the meaning of the verb "to have someone" from that song..... oh yea! :D :D :D

If John didn't like those lyrics, he must have felt guilty about copying Dylan's style of writing.

Maybe the problem was not the style, I guess John didn't like the meaning of those words, if he took them as a direct message to him. You know, John thought that he was the center of the Universe.
