Happy belated 4th to our American cousins !!  partypeople

Happy Belated B’day USA

Thx!  icon_good

Thanks, Kev.  Both sets of my grandparents immigrated from Russia in 1920.  The first they saw of The United States was the Statue of Liberty, just like the picture I posted shows.

Mine too, from Ireland and Lithuania.  :) A little bit earlier, though -- late 1800s.

The Stars and Stripes Forever

John Philip Sousa   "The March King"

The tune to this march came to John Philip Sousa on Christmas Day 1896 while he was on a ship steaming from Europe to the United States.  He transcribed the full arrangement to paper upon his arrival in the United States.

What's better than The Stars and Stripes Forever with three piccolos?

Gorgeous, and I normally adore Sousa. But I'm just not feeling patriotic this year. At all.

It's my sister's birthday today too...

I hope she has a great birthday, Barry.

Far
We've been traveling far
Without a home
But not without a star

Free
Only want to be free
We huddle close
Hang on to a dream
On the boats and on the planes
They're coming to America
Never looking back again
They're coming to America

When you're feeling up to it, Kathy, the full 1952 Stars and Stripes Forever motion picture is now on Youtube...

You'll find the sequence where the Stars and Stripes march comes to him while at sea:  1:15.00

I liked the scene where Debra Paget auditions for Sousa...

We visited local park for celebration with live music and activities.
Did I mentioned firework show?

Barry, with all due respect, I find these comments of yours offensive.

Barry, with all due respect, I find these comments of yours offensive.

Lighten up, Kathy.  My comment to Moog was meant to be a humorous response to Moog saying that "You shouldn’t underestimate how shallow we guys can be sometimes" when we were discussing Linda Ronstadt in another thread.

If you watched the movie you would have seen that neither Sousa or his wife were offended by her audition.  Indeed, he hired her to go on tour with his band as a singer and dancer.

As far as Debra Paget is concerned, she's a very talented actress, singer and dancer and enjoyed a long career in motion pictures.  She was perfect in her major role in Stars and Stripes Forever.  She was just nineteen years old when the movie was filmed.

Earlier in that post, I gave you a time mark in that motion picture where the Stars and Stripes march came to Sousa while he was at sea.  In his autobiography, he mentions this and how he transcribed the march note for note for all instruments when he got ashore.  I thought you would find the ocean liner scene relevant and to your liking.  I guess I was wrong.

To lighten things up around here, this clip from Stars and Stripes Forever shows Sousa (Clifton Webb) introducing the Two Step to his Washington Post...

Debra Paget did all that wearing heels!
