Paperback Believe (Life's biggest ? answered)
« on: February 05, 2005, 07:32:00 PM »

Got this from another board.  VERY interesting :):

Did the Monkees try to imitate the Beatles?

Of course they did. Here's a cool QuickTime video you can download that may answer that question. It features the Beatles and the Monkees.

You'll need QuickTime to view it. Just right-click and save to your computer.

The Monkees were deliberately made to ape (pun intended) the success of Hard Days Night and Help!. I was a kid in the sixties, and their excellent TV show meant that (for me at least) the Monkees had a far bigger impact than the Beatles (sad to say).
A string of great singles as well.
Steven Stills (of CSN&Y fame) actually auditioned, but was rejected because of his teeth! Wonder what would have happened to my God number  2, Neil Young, then!
If you get a chance check out Head, the soundtrack to their movie. They wrote and played on this one and it ain't half bad (movie had Jack Nicholson in it).

It's a video to accompany last years mashup of the two songs.  It's a great accompaniment to the song itself, but the mashup is better just listening to.  The video is a bit jumpy.  Still, pretty well done.

The Monkees were a made for television manufactured pop group based on the Beatles back in the 60's who shouldn't have been mocked by the serious rock press.   Last Train To Clarksville sounds similiar to Day Tripper & so on but they had some originality of their own in their music & in country rock pioneer Mike Nesmith.  Looking back on it almost 40 years later the Monkees are finally with their 60's contemporaries like the Beatles, the Stones, the Beach Boys & the Byrds with timeless music, timeless series & classic psychedelic movie Head.

The Monkees were created to cash in on the gap, which the Beatles had left.
The obvious maturity of The Beatles could be seen, thus the need for something, plus it was real American blood. :)

now all they need to do is mix in the Beach Boys "Sloop John B" and really confuse us.

Nice job, go home productions!

Let's see what you can do with James Brown and Petula Clark.

Where do you get this stuff from?
You always sound like a press release. :)

In fact Clarksville was "inspired" directly from Paperback Writer's guitar lick.

I don't like the Monkees at all. I have an extreme dislike for prefab (excuse the pun) artists.
