PLANS to create a Beatles visitor centre in Penny Lane are expected to take a major step forward today.
Each year, around 50,000 people make a pilgrimage to the place forever associated with the band.
But there are currently no tourist attractions in Penny Lane dedicated to the group.
Councillors will today agree to hand over part of Grove Mount playing fields to the Penny Lane Development Trust which has drawn up £3m plans to create a Beatles visitor centre.
Plans include a recording studio, bar, restaurant, shop and meeting rooms for community groups.
If proposals are submitted by spring, the trust hopes to start work on the site by the end of the year. It is also planning a bid for cash to the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The plans have the support of local residents, councillors and neighbouring Dovedale primary school.

Should have been done years sooner. Did anyone see how quiet that road was on the recent Beatles secrets programme in UK on ch.5??? It could sure do with it.
