Here are some songs with good basswork from paul....I cant fit all of them,so if its not listed please vote for your favorite basswork out of the ones and listed, and you can name some Beatles songs I forgot that have really good bass lines

Only 1 (me) for Something? That bass contributes to the song like no other! I Want You has a terrific bass part, yes, but Something's is SOOO beautiful and REALLY is a big contributor to molding the song and making it a classic.

I even like his 'simple' basswork, like on 'Let Me Roll It', perfect punctuation. He doesn't get much credit for being the incredible bass player he is. He always knew how much or how little to put in and it was always in the pocket. Just a tremendous musician all around.

Not always. I've Got A Feeling ain't too hot considering he stops his melodic bass line everytime he's singing!

Come Together. The interesting thing to keep in mind is that Paul was also singing while he played some incredible bass lines. Hard to Do.

Come Together is quite a tuffy to sing and play. I suppose he gets the first verse to get warmed up on it before he has to sing. lol
Heh, the thing is, I don't think it was intentional. That's the only song where he's done that, and there's definitely something missing when he just magically stops playing :-/

I don't think you need a bass part running through the entire length of every song. There are nuances. So what if its just him and the cool guitar part? and its only the first verse if I'm not mistaken. He kicks it in pretty good when he starts raging and goes from there.

The thing is that that was the only song to my recollection that that happened. I think What Goes On summarized clearly with this E-Mail:
"Paul never seems to play his melodic bass line and sing at the same time. Especially at 2:01, Paul returns to doing the full bass line while John sings, yet stops at 2:45 when he has to rejoin him. So what? Then its one song. Watch him play in an old concert video. Watch him play in a new concert video. He has/had no problems singing and playing at the same time.
Maybe he felt that it sounded better that way, not that he couldn't do it.

Then you're going to have to do alot better than mentioning one song out of hundreds. Why is it that there is all that incredible stuff out there, and someone has to single out one thing that they think is less than perfect? Who gives a flying fu**? The Beatles' music had plenty of imperfections. Take the song "In My Life", its one of the greatest songs ever as far as I'm concerned. Listen to the end of it. The last chord. Whoever is playing it, my guess John, their finger hits one of the strings before the song ends and their is that slight buzz. It could have been cleaned up or re-recorded so the chord just rings and it would be "perfect", but no, they left it is was. So what? 'Hey Jude' has John p*ssed for a second and using the "F" word, they could have edited it out. They didn't. So what? You're out of focus Son.

One example of a missing bass part that could very possibly have been deliberate, doesn't cut it. Sorry.
If it's deliberate, I don't believe it was a very good decision. You hear no moving bass while Paul sings, and then you hear a pretty good bassline when Lennon comes in, which just stops magically when Paul starts singing, doesn't seem like a great deliberate move. Paul getting too excited with himself could better explain why he wasn't hitting that bass part.
Like I said, not "in the pocket" here.

I know the Beatles did not write Twist and Shout, but the bass work on that piece is marvelous, it took me over a week to get down.

Listen to Sting on almost every song he has ever done......If you are a bass player/ singer...It's kinda natural that when you sing, the bassline tends to become compromised.
Some riffs like Paperback Writer are easy to keep up whilst singing. None of the Beatles were in the pocket all of the time.

If you try out or listen to It's Getting Better you'll notice that again the bass calms down to octave pushes during the verses, although mastering the riff of the chorus whilst singing is a tricky thing.....Makes me wonder as this was done in the studio probably as an overdub, whether Macca still maintained the ethos of live playing. Or whether there is a strong case that his attention to dynamics led him to leave the space for the vocals?
As for I gotta Feeling, it's the rhodes that takes up the lick while Paul is singing..The bass line is a very subtle change when John sings that keeps the song interesting and the lick (Almost emulating and possibly replacing the rhodes riff) is played in the gaps of Lennons singing. Although I recognise there was a lot of pettiness at times within the group, I'm sure on this track in particular Paul is'nt sabotaging Lennon's vocals.

I've got a DVD of his show in Madrid from May 30th, 2004 where he does 'I've Got A Feeling', I'll have to pop it in just for fun to see how he did it live. I watched it once and can't remember offhand. Another tangent-the song selection is all over the place from 'In Spite of All the Danger' to 'All Things Must Pass' to 'Let Me Roll It' that goes into a 'Foxey Lady' ending, and the coupe de grace 'Helter Skelter', and he sandwiches 'I've Got a Feeling' between 'Live and Let Die' and 'Lady Madonna'.

Thanks for setting me straight, I didn't realize your expertise and the incredible Beatle authority with whom I was dealing. From now on I shall defer to you when there are any questions that require the depth of knowledge you have when it comes to matters as to how Paul or any of the Beatles should have been playing on any particular track. I'll let others post when you raise such mind-boggling questions about what the difference is between Mono and Stereo or what a walrus might be. A thousand pardons oh wise one.

However, because I'm not one to troll and bait, I'll make it up to you with this tid-bit in While My Guitar Gently Weeps:
"4:06, 4:22, 4:39
The pattern of the song up to the coda had the band hitting a D chord before each "weeps" (3:49) and then a C chord before each "weeps" in the next pass (4:06). But in the coda, this pattern becomes jumbled. At 4:06, the organ plays the wrong chord, a D, while the rest of band plays a C.
At 4:22, it becomes even worse. For years, I'd wondered why Paul's bass line sounds incorrect here. But upon closer inspection, it's the rest of the band that commits the error! At 4:22, Paul plays a D on the bass while the rest of the band plays a C. Given the pattern of the song thus far, Paul was correct. Notice also how, at 4:39, the rest of the band hits a D, while Paul hits a C! Paul's correct again!"

Didn't George play bass in Taxman? I thought he did and Paul took the lead guitar. I like almost all of Paul's bass playing,but it would bore me to death to listen to all the songs and just dissect the bass and then determine which one was the best. I'm glad the songs had other instruments and singing. Just bass playing wouldn't have been enough.

You didn't mess up, its just tough to pick a few when there's so much great stuff. I think alot of fans like us flip flop, you'll put down a few songs and then a few more hit you later on.

Doesnt Paul play both, bass and lead, on Taxman? Too much crap to remember with this band.
Speaking of not being able to play and sing at the same time,,,B.B. King cant at all. I always found that to be odd from one of the supposedly great blues players.

They are always hitting wrong notes!!! lol...I'm So Tired is a classic where the chords seem to 'merge.' It seems to me they always picked takes that vibed rather than musical accuracy. I much prefer it this way...It gets all us fans talkin and deliberating and more importantly, wanting to listen to it again. lol

Agreed. I think one of the zillions of things that made them so brilliant is that they left in alot of mistakes, they didn't go for absolute perfection. For example, John using the "F" word on "Hey Jude", the the accidental bump on the guitar string during the final chord of "In My Life" that created a little buzz, etc. Most bands will do take after take, edit after edit to make it perfect, the Fabs certainly worked hard and did several takes of several songs, but minor imperfections be damned, they went with it. How cool is that?

Was just listening to "Something" with the bass turned up, and for being a nice, mellow song, he's all over the place. "Lovely Rita" is unbelievable.

As a Bass player (just started) I would say Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds or The Word. Its not really hard Bass but it seems to sing the song with the singer, and it sounds amazing.

Although Paul was technically very good and melodic like no other bass players (well not really - at least at that time) were, I always thought his best trick was sometimes being simple in choosing the right part from the song. For instance Please Please Me verses are just single notes being fired out until the bridge to the chorus. Perfect the tension and mood of the song. Very simple and almost counter to the way that beat would be 'traditionally'. Another example is All My Loving were the bass line determins the grove of the song. Great walking bass that is a normal scale but used to perfection to exemplify the 'swing' of the tune. Ditto Eight Days a week.

get on songs like Penny Lane, All My Loving, Roll Over Beethoven etc.. :)
You don't get any bass player's like that these days. the only bass player
i regard highly is Tina Weymouth from the the Talking Heads & she said her
fav was Macca.

I've gone for Rain. I Want You (She's So Heavy) is arguably better but I feel that Paul's style on this track was a bit too similar to "The Ox" John Entwhistle (The Who) rather than his own unique melodic bass playing on other tracks.

I think the two best ones for Paul's bass playing are 'Rain' and 'Hey Bulldog'. He just goes off on Bulldog and it is great!

Paul's bass line in Come Together makes the song. It would not be the same song without it. And John was so snotty about his participating. Well, according to Emerick anyway. I also love the way the bass and drums work together in A Day in the Life. It's brilliant. And how about Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except For Me and My Monkey and While My Guitar Gently Weeps?

BTW, the bass in Revolution is pretty damn cool too. I know it's not complicated or anything, but it's just perfect for that song. Driving.

The bass work in all the included songs is great, but it has to be Rain for me. All the Beatles are on their "A-game" on that one and the bass still comes out on top.

This could've been mentioned on an earlier thread page, but i can't believe 'Hey Bulldog' is not an option! I love watching the people on Youtube do their bass versions of that, and all of Paul's classics.
