Title: lefthanded?
Post by: Taxgirl on March 08, 2005, 12:23:33 PM
I read on a famous-lefhanded webpage that Ringo is lefhanded... It is quite new for me, because I always knew Paul was, but Ringo, I never heard about this. Do you know anything about it?

There's a really good discussion about Ringo's left-handed style here:

What en excellent thread. Good natured and very informative.
A few (probably many) years ago there was a doco on TV with George Martin explaining why some songs are appealing, and others aren't. (all very technical probably). I never saw it, but wish I had. I have such respect for that man.

I'm left-handed, but it's done me no good! But can it really be said that Ringo had a unique way of druming because he was left-handed? Can the same be said for McCartney's bass playing? Any info on that?

And anyone noticed that the guys didn't seem so tall when they appeared in pictures with other people: Sir George (in the studio) or Peter Brown (in John's wedding) just two examples I remember now. There are videoclips of John... for example: at the beginning of Stand By Me clip John and Yoko entered the white limusine and the man besides them are taller than John (how big the limusine was!!)... if John, Paul and George were 5 11 the other men were 6 03 at least!!! I think John was about 5 08 and Paul and George about 5 09.

If they'd done a CSNY kind of thing, with four acoustics on stage - Ringo could have handled simpler chords I guess - that would have been cool!

Ringo said once that he only knew 3 chords on guitar ...

... but he was better on piano.

"Though Ringo reportedly admits his musical knowledge beyond percussion is limited, he composed some songs on piano, including "Don't Pass Me By" and "Octopus's Garden".

That's the great thing about Ringo - he took a little talent and turned it around to make it much more! The left-handed guy on a right-handed drumkit, the exploration of music through just a small number of chords. But, it's always seemed odd to me that he couldn't actually learn more guitar chords throughout the 60s. Saying that he only knew 3 chords on guitar; surely he could have learnt a few more than that. Seems curious to me.

I adore discussions of relative height-- it's a weakness.  :D

IMHO I believe the young Beatles shown above (as everyone shrinks when they get older) were about 5'10". The extra height was due to their heeled beatle boots. Paul is probably 5'9" or even 5'8" now, and Ringo is tiny! He was probably 5'8" at most, and is certainly 5'6" or so now. Little Ring! *chucks him under the chin*

hh,

I just typed my name where asked and clicked on "chat" and was in.  No need to sign up evidently.

I would say 5'9" for John.  The other "tall ones" are about the same.  The Cuban heeled boots, as you mentioned, gave them another 2 inches and I guess that's why you see 5'11" on the back of the trading cards.  Ringo looks to be 2-3" shorter.

Regardless, they were "larger than life."

Indeed. I love these guys. :)

5'9" sounds right to me. I've been doing some comparative height tests with the older Beatles. There's a clip of John standing next to Howard Cosell, and he looks short! HC is 6'1", so 5'9" would be about right for John. I think HC would be less likely to publish a false height, as he's not a star in the same way the Beatles are-- he doesn't need to be a sex symbol to report on sports.  ;) And men are supposed to be tall to be sexy; one of our silly remaining prejudices.

Then there's George appearing on Rutland Weekend television with Eric Idle-- same relative height difference and EI is also 6'1". George also looks tiny in his video "This Song" when he's being marched down the hall by Harry Nilsson in his role of policeman. HN's height is 6' 2". Doubtless George picked him because he's such a huge guy, but George is indeed several inches shorter.

One thing that shocked me (because I'm easily shocked) is when George did his cameo in the Rutles movie. He was standing next to Michael Palin, and they were the same height!  :o I was shocked because I always knew MP was short. Poor MP had to work with EI (6'1") and Graham Chapman (6'2") and John Cleese (6'4-3/4") in the Pythons, so he only looked small in comparison. MP's published height is 5'10.5". Assuming he is lying (because he's a man in show business, he must lie about his height!) then he is also about 5'9", same as GH.

PS: Thank you, Raxo and HG, for the chat room instructions. I have never yet chatted, but I'm prepared now in case I ever do!  :)

Remember that it's just for fun! :D ... He hadn't enough fingers to wear all his rings  8) ...

... by the way, there's no watch in that pic and he used to wear it on his left hand: take a look at Help (the film) and in one of the first scenes Ringo (and the others too) are sleeping and when he's on the floor you can see his watch! :)

I've seen pictures with Ringo writing with his right hand, and everyone says he drums with his right. I always thought he was right-handed, but I don't know. Guess I should ask him! ;D

He's left-handed.  Depending on what kind of lefty you are, there is a certain amount of ambivalence.  I'm left- handed and bat right handed, drum right-handed, but write, saw, whatever, with my left hand.  Phil Collins is a strict 'Inverted Sinistral', he is left-handed and drums left-handed.  If you saw a picture of Ringo writing with his right hand, chances are the picture is inverted or turned around.  There are alot of pics that way that you'll see with Paul playing Bass right-handed and the others lefty.  They are just turned around or published wrong.

Apparently there is scientific evidence that suggests people who are naturally left handed who are forced to write right handed develop speach stammers. Weird hey?

Where have you heard or seen that Ringo was left-handed? I always thought he was a righty. One reason why is because in the Anthology book on page 84 or something, there's a pic of him writing with his right hand. Right above that is a pic of Paul writing with his left. So, I don't know why they would switch Ringo's picture around and not Paul's. I don't know, I could be wrong. I just always thought Paul was the lefty of the group and never heard anything about Ringo being a lefty.

Here's just one of the zillion sites if you google Ringo left handed.  Look under 'Role with the Beatles'.

Here's a Ringo quote from 1997, about 'Rain': "It's the first time I think I was playing that `snatch' hi-hat (`open' punctuations), and what helped me to do that was that I was born left-handed. I write right-handed, but if I throw or play cricket or do anything physical, I'm left-handed. So I'm sort of this left-handed guy with a right-handed kit. I cannot start on the snare, go to the top tom, and then go to the floor tom. I have to start on the floor tom and move up, so those `snatches' on the hi-hat were just to give me room to get somewhere so I could get my hands working and get my arms to move around the drums."

wow so technically he's not really "left-handed"
