Title: Paul Clear - Out
Post by: DaveRam on July 03, 2009, 09:04:31 AM
I've had a Paul clear - out  :o
Since i stopped smoking pot i've been paying a little more critical attention to my McCartney CD collection and i've come to the conclusion that much of Paul's solo material is rubbish ?
So i've sent half of my collection off to the car boot sale .
Albums i've got rid of are :

McCartney
Wild Life
Red Rose Speedway
Wings At The Speed Of Sound
Back to The Egg
Pipes Of Peace
Give My Regards To Broadstreet
Press To Play
Flowers In The Dirt
Off The Ground
Driving Rain

I really have fallen - out of love with these albums and did'nt shed one tear as i waved them goodbye.
Albums i've saved are :

RAM
Band On The Run
Venus And Mars
London Town
McCartney II
Tug Of War
Flaming Pie
Chaos And Creation In The Backyard
Memory Almost Full
Electric Arguments

Quit a drastic cull of my Paul CD's , a similar fate as happend to David Bowie ;D
With a clearer head i can now see much of Paul's solo career is patchy ? i can also see much of the other Beatles solo careers are also patchy ?  :)

PS:  With a clearer head i can remember what happend yesterday , can some of you who were taking part in this lost thread ?   ;)

I catch your drift Dave. Sorry that my previous post about start smoking pot again was vanished in the transfer to here. Never mind, you won't do it I know. lol

It's all personal taste of course and not all albums are good. Funny to see tho that you saved McCartney II. Personally I do like RRS and BTTE. But one could say that the list you've saved are overall essential albums.

I saved McCartney II Bobber beacause that album more than any other illustrates Paul's patchiness , there is no one else to blame it's all him  ;D
Two great songs in Coming Up and Waterfalls and a whole load of rubbish as well , it's an album that when i play it i actually listen too from beginning to end , it's marvellous just how self - indulgent he can be if he's given free rain ?
When i listen to it i often think this is maybe how his creative mind works , flashes of brilliance coupled with sloppiness and quirkiness ?
You can see why John was good for him , likewise because he doe's have the ability to be very quirky as illustrated on this album he was also good for John ?
Back To The Egg was the only album i have had second thoughts about getting rid of Bobber , the rest i can live without  :)

^ A little bit in defence of Paul, but aren't those crtiticisms that could be levelled at any artist?
Forty years is bound to produce more than a few clonkers.

^^^^ Agree Kevin , i noticed it with David Bowie ? who i had maybe as many solo albums as Paul .
Bowie's 80' mid 90's stuff is also patchy .
Only kept Bowie's great albums from 69 to 83 , everything else apart from Heathen 2001 got the chop .

Yeah I can see what you are getting at. I am a huge Paul fan, so I have a soft spot for his work. But I am glad you saved my favorites! lol Band On The Run, Venus And Mars and London Town  ;D

You could make a very nice album of individual songs of those rejected albums tho.

I really like these three emmi , London Town is a lovely album nice and mellow great to chill out too ?
And although Paul as worked with other people over the years i think the songs he wrote with Denny six on this album are among his best collaborations with another writer excluding John ?
Have great teenage memories of both Band On The Run and Venus And Mars and are way to strong to get rid of  :)
I did keep Wingspan also so i have the rest of his songs i love  :)

I agree on the first six songs. Especially Kreen Akrore is about the worst Paul ever recorded. Hey Hey from Pipes Of Peace is another very bad one.

Yes, besides John I think that him and Denny were some of the best over the years. But Paul is one of the best writers ever lol. Bob Dylan is up there too.

McCartney said it himself that you have to like him to enjoy the record.

Which albums could you let go though and which would you save  ? :)
Title: Re: Paul Clear - Out
Post by: JimmyMcCullochFan on July 06, 2009, 08:42:34 AM
I'd save all of McCartney's 70's records as that's the period of his that I enjoy most for obvious reasons. I must admit to not hearing (most of) McCartney 2, Pipes of Peace (besides the title track and Say Say Say) and Press as I have heard they aren't that great. I could live without Flowers In The Dirt, Run Devil Run, Driving Rain and Off The Ground.

So here's a list of what I'd keep.

McCartney
Ram
Wild Life
Red Rose Speedway
Band On The Run
Venus and Mars
Speed of Sound
Wings Over America
London Town
Wings Greatest
Back To The Egg
Tug Of War
Flaming Pie
Chaos and Creation In The Backyard
Memory Almost Full
Title: Re: Paul Clear - Out
Post by: DaveRam on July 06, 2009, 09:27:24 AM
^^^ Must admit the 70's period doe's hold up quite well and his latter stuff from Flaming Pie is pretty good too , but he certainly seems to have lost his way after Tug Of War in the 80's .
Title: Re: Paul Clear - Out
Post by: Penny Lane on July 06, 2009, 09:36:18 AM
Dave, my answer to your question would be fairly similar to JMF's.  Off the top of my head, I might subtract "Red Rose Speedway" and add in "Flowers in the Dirt" and "Electric Arguments" on JMF's "keep" list.  I have heard some of "Run Devil Run" and it sounds good to me.  "McCartney II" bugs me, though.  I know some songs from it and they are hard to listen to.

At this point in his life, I think Paul is going through a late Renaissance of sorts.  I've really enjoyed C&C, MAF, and EA, and I hope his winning streak with albums will continue.
Title: Re: Paul Clear - Out
Post by: DaveRam on July 06, 2009, 09:41:47 AM
^^^^ Agree Penny Lane this late period is a real purple patch of creativity , think it's because it's so good it shows up the patchiness of some of his other work ?
Title: Re: Paul Clear - Out
Post by: Penny Lane on July 06, 2009, 09:52:31 AM
^ Maybe so.  Comparing his weaker works to his latest good albums do make the former pale by comparison.

I wonder how Paul has gotten on his recent creative streak.  Is it because of his age?  The suffering he's been through (with nutty Heather and Linda's death)?  Perhaps a realization of his mortality?

I recall the first time I heard MAF, I was surprised.  MAF is a mix of happy and sad, but one thing that ran through my mind was that it felt like an emotional release.  Sort of like "Thank God I'm free from that b**** Heather!"  LOL!
Title: Re: Paul Clear - Out
Post by: DaveRam on July 06, 2009, 10:07:49 AM
^^^ Think age as something to do with it , and certainly Linda's death and the divorce , what i've noticed most his that his lyrics are much more personal and less throw away on the latter albums , it's been really good to see him consentrate on his lyrics , massive improvement on that front ?
Title: Re: Paul Clear - Out
Post by: Andy Smith on July 06, 2009, 05:23:42 PM
well in my mind Macca's albums to keep for me are:

Ram
Red Rose Speedway
Band on the Run
Venus & Mars
London Town
Back to the Egg
Tug of War
Press to PLay (i know this gets critised but its a personal fav of mine)
Flowers in the Dirt
Off the Ground
Flaming Pie
Chaos & Creation in Backyard (i think it works well as an album, but i'm not a big fan of it)
Memory Almost Full
Electric Arguments

so the ones i never take much notice of or think are that wonderful:

Wild Life (nice songs, could be stronger, but the production and silly dittys leave it cold for me :-[)

McCartney 1 (an ok album, not great, only 2 or 3 classics on it but the rest is forgettable)

Wings at Speed of sound (starts off nice but starts to loose it by the end, sort of boring for me really)

McCartney 2 ( i think he was quite adventourous on this album and i heard other outtakes from it so it
might have made an interesting and great double album, but only a limited songs from the sessions
made it on the album which dissapoints me)

Pipes of Peace (quite a poor patcy album, pointess things like Hey Hey, Other Me and Sweetest Little Show,
but does contain great stuff like Say Say Say, So Bad and of course the title track)

Give My Regards to Broad Street (works better as a film i think but the soundtrack is a bit pointless, only the
three songs, so bad, not such a bad boy & no values are the best on the album)

Run Devil Run (a fine collection of rock n roll classics but will eventually loose the interest of music fans or macca fans.
i never really play it. i suppose its because i like to hear his own composistions)

Driving Rain (now i actually love this album but i can see that it dosen't hold up well as an album, but he does sound
very hard rocking and has some great songs i think like Lonely Road, About You, Magic and I Do. but as an album
as a full i don't really think it works and its bit too long..

anyway, thats my macca run down so feel free to insult me if i picked a poor macca album if its a fav of yours! :P
after all said, Macca is my fav songwriter, musician ever so i think there's at least some fascinating great stuff on
all his released apart from Broad Street.

^^^ Not to different to my list Andy and it's OK to have a fave like Press To Play , that album out of his 80's ones could have been really good it's the heavy handed production that spoils it for me .
I'm really pleased London Town is getting the thumbs up from a few of you , it's a brilliant album and just gets better with each passing year  8)

This thread is insane if you ask me. Of course I dont agree with Dave and his choices, but its not that. Why get rid of them if you already own them? Did you need a quick dose of cash to fill up the tank or something? Hell, i've bought CD's for one freaking song before. I'd never get rid of CD's that had something I liked on them regardless of how bad the rest is.

Also, I like half the songs on Daves 'Bad Song' list so there you go.
Title: Re: Paul Clear - Out
Post by: DaveRam on July 07, 2009, 09:42:46 AM
^^^^Don't need the cash tkitna , just felt it was time to downsize my CD collection and as i had pushing 50 Paul McCartney and David Bowie CD's as well as many others i no-longer really listend too or really liked i just decided to have a clear - out .
Agree there are odd tracks on the CD's i've got rid of that i like , but when i looked at Wingspan that pretty much as the songs on it i like , so i made the judgement the rest could go .
And i honestly have come to the conclusion that quite a lot of Paul's work is patchy , obviously this is a personal opinion and it's clear from the thread some don't agree with my choices .
Just don't see the point in hanging on to stuff i no longer rate or like .
I am a bit of a hoarder so it's quite a good thing to keep that obession in check  ;D

Oh, i'll be the first to tell you that Pauls solo stuff is patchy and thats being kind about it, but hell, everybodys work is patchy. Beatle albums have songs on them I dont care for. A lot of filler on some of them, but i'd never part with them. Theres always an obscure tune that I love on most cd's that i'll play just for the enjoyment. Whatever though, if you feel like you needed to get rid of them, then by all means do it.

I try to find a friend that will trade cd's when I dont like one. It works out sometimes,,,,sometimes it doesnt.

LOL...that is so funny.

What you need to do is upload all your CD music onto your computer, so if you ever get rid of them, you'll still have the mp3's in the end.

I do like that album, BTW.

My area sucks.  The Salvation Army has gone out of business here, as has other stores like Blockbuster, etc.

I do get some second-hand albums from other stores, but they're kind of far from me.
